On Turay:
"He's a guy that we need," Ash said. "He's a guy that's got some twitch. He's explosive and can rush the passer and that's something I feel like we're probably missing right now on our defense. We need him badly, but he's got a long way to go and we'll see how committed he is."

On Snorweah:
"Snorweah is fine," Ash said. "He had some academic things that he needed to take care of. Having him on the football field in the spring wasn't going to benefit him. But he's done a great job and we'll just have to see how he comes out."

On Peoples:
"It's still up in the air,"

Oh boy this is going well. Training camp? And isn't it news since Snorweah and Peoples were pretty big question marks after the Spring.
I'll find some OT posts later.

Based in that comment would anyone else be shocked if Des ever took the field for us again?

Darius was not mentioned in the article. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I did read that they expect everyone who was on the injury list to be ready but considering his importance to this team the absence of his name in the article makes me wonder why.

Second or third time I've heard Ash make a comment about seeing 'how committed' Turay is. Anyone know if he has displayed a lack of effort in the past?

I was struck by that as well. Subtle things in the article that raised an eye brow as I read.

I believe there are sometimes conflicts between his beliefs and training, nutrition, etc...
If I'm wrong or speaking out of turn, I apologize.

When I read that I thought he's given this exact quote before. Do we know if he said it again or if it's same quote being recycled for the article? Either way, last time Ash went on to say Turay had been doing want was asked but it is one thing on a whiteboard and another on the field for something like that

Yeah might be a requote as I also read it previously using the same verbage.

Maybe you are thinking about Coach Burnham?:

"I hope that mentally he's tuned-in in the meetings. He's certainly not given me any reason to believe he's not," Burnham said. "We know what he can do physically when he's engaged and playing well. He's explosive off the ball. So hopefully this package is multiple and will give him a chance to bring him off the edge some and drop him and use some of those abilities. But I don't know anything on Kemoko other than, 'Hey, he's been attentive in meetings.' "

Actually I heard it in a YouTube video from Ash

If there is a hidden message there for Turay it might be that physical talent gets you only so far and maybe those guys that have an abundance of that might be leaning too much on that and not putting in the effort that can help them improve well beyond their natural talent level.

I have a different take on the Turay comments. First. NJ.COm always recycles quotes, stories and photos. So let's assume Ash said this once.

Second, he said "here is a guy we really need...he's explosive...it's something we are missing right now....we need him badly." Did everyone miss that part of the quote? It seems Ash is high on Turay. To me the last part is just a nudge. Ash strikes me as a guy who will not let our players rest on their laurels. That is a good thing. He will push them to be the best that they can be.Same with Parker.

Now having said that, Football is a punishing game, especially in the trenches. It is not for everyone as the staff has said repeatedly. If that last comment was the only thing Ash said about Turay I would be worried because he was injured and not everyone wants to come back from injury. But that was one minor comment after a handful of "we need this guy." We shall see.

Some of this seems like attitude/mentality transitions that Ash is processing through the team. Ash knows the collective mindset that he feels the team must grow to have - he wants players who totally embrace the idea of 'perfecting their craft' - who will tirelessly work at being "experts at their position" - and there may be some players who need to travel some distance to get to that mindset.....
It may be particularly challenging for guys who were 'discovered' late and have been considered a 'diamond in the rough' - these guys explode upon the scene with lots of raw talent - they can have bursts of explosive play- and shine in an almost 'savant' like manner - but some may not have a strong football focused instincts & work-ethic deeply ingrained in them -- to be a part of the team that Ash is building, they have to totally get up to speed - to be strong contributors to an Ash team, they will need to comprehensively know every tiny aspect of their position - and how it meshes with the other 10 players on the field - day after day after day after day.

Many of the points made above are very valid, from both the good and bad perspective. I have a feeling that we are going to have to deal with Ash's pressers and comments by trying to decipher which comments are an honest assessment of a situation and which ones are designed to be motivational toward his players, and some may be both. It will most likely give us plenty to talk (or complain) about.
