UCLA- Myles Johnson is "Our Guy"--Foul Assessed on Myles?

We were 18-14 (16-12 regular season, 1-1 BTT, 1-1 NCAAT) And you have to remember the win total is depressed by lack of OOC games due to covid. With a regular OOC slate we're probably at 19-20 wins in the regular season.

That being said, that team had a BRUTAL January.
The peak of Rutgers basketball was beating Illinois at home like 91-88

The guy should be in the NBA as a back up big making millions. Too lazy to fill his destiny &
transfers to play for Napoleon Kronin who basically ruined him. Only at RU this would be the outcome.
Showed no loyalty to RU who developed him. And the snake Cronin promised him a bunch of BS.
Basically left us at the altar & his legacy was a missed wide open dunk. Only at RU

Wow …and a
Brutual twist on reality

.i let others straighten this one out …I’m not going to waste my time on this massive pile of ——-

Loved Myles from day one, probably due to how good of a student I knew he was from the get-go, as a good friend of mine who I was in grad school with at RU (chem eng'g) was a prof/administrator in the dean's office in the eng'g school when Myles made his campus visit before coming to RU. She was his primary tour guide and became his academic mentor, since they hit it off well (they both spoke Japanese which probably helped) and she was a huge fan of his on and off the court as he was a great student/leader. He may not have reached his full potential as a hoops player at RU, but he made some strong contributions to some of our best Pike teams. And hard to fault him for heading back home to UCLA for grad school after doing so well at RU. Seems like he's doing quite well with a bright future, as per his LinkedIn bio...

As I said in another post.
look no further than praise from opposing coaches, if you want to know the true worth of our players

Myles was lauded by every opposing coach we played against.

WOW…. It’s difficult to put into words how much Myles’s final year team underachieved.
It was also Cliffs first year, that team should have been a final 4 team…

That team going 16 and 13 should have been a huge warning signal… It was coaching malfeasance at its best …sorry!
Cliff was completely lost on the court his first year with Myles, it wasn't til the following season that he became a big presence.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Take the L and go away.

Always enjoyed Myles in the pressers too. He was quiet, but when he spoke, he (unsurprisingly) offered incredibly insightful and thoughtful responses.

Why would i take the L? Missed the biggest layup in hoops history, regressed under Cronin, hurt OUR
team by leaving. Cronin sold him a bill of goods. And what’s wrong about our engineering grad dept.
I honestly feel with another year of development under Pike he could have been a pro backup. He had some tools but Cronin made him a human screener. Sad to see with that potential. Remember we root for Rutgers not UCLA.

You missed theboat.
In multiple posts on this forum with articles linked quoted Myles as saying he was not interested in pursuing a career in pro basketball, and he was more interested in pursuing a career in line with his major.
There's nothing wrong with Rutgers Engineering grad department. But you probably don't realize UCLA is next level. It is ranked far ahead of Rutgers as a university in prestige and name recognition. You also fail to account that UCLA was close to home, and perhaps Myles wanted to be close to his family for a year.
So despite all of your "feelings," none of your feelings mattered to Myles. What mattered to Myles were his own feelings and career aspirations. But as is typical of some posters on this forum, you decided to turn it into a negative on the young man and crap all over him. You have a history of doing this. Be better.

Rutgers football: Tim Wright dropping the ball with 4 minutes remaining caused an interception that led to Louisville winning the Big East title and earning a spot in the Sugar Bowl in 2012. Wright is real good guy... had a fine RU career and played in the NFL. I hate the fact that's what I think of first when I hear Wright's name.
Mike this is an interesting take because I blame that loss squarely on the botched ineligible receiver call by the refs taking a TD off the board. I don't even remember this Tim Wright play.

But as for Myles the Monster, unfortunately, yes. That missed dunk against Houston likely cost us a trip to the Sweet 16. Hard to swallow. But I love Myles and all he represents as the idyllic student athlete.

Who was the best player on NCAA teams?
Myles

Look at numbers in his 3 years when he was on the court vs off the court.

He was our Bill Russell
I love Myles but No he was not even the third best player on that NCAA team. Geo, RHJ and Caleb were all better. With all due respect, to say he was better than Roy Hinson may be the dumbest comment I ever heard on this board

Roy Hinson before my time. Myles Johnson was the foundation to EVERYTHING. No Myles, no NCAA, no Ace and Dylan. Geo, Ron and Caleb were all replaceable. Myles was not. All you need to do is look at the 3 years Myles was here and look at D and O actually when he was on vs off the floor.

I get what GRF is saying. Myles had a unique skillset on those teams, so even if one wants to argue that Ron or Geo were better individual players, they had overlapping skill sets. We had NOBODY else that could guard the paint and rebound like Myles, so the performance really suffered when he was not on the floor. That doesn't mean that someone like Painter would have chosen Myles to join his Purdue teams over those guys if he could have drafted one Rutgers player, as Purdue has always had very talented big men.

I'll say it again - if we had prime Myles production on this year's team, we are an NCAA team. We beat KSU and Princeton easily. I think we would have beaten Indiana if prime Myles does not have foul trouble that night. We beat aTm with his inside presence IMO and maybe Alabama, too.

But this is the roster we have. I was happy with what Ogbole and Sommerville brought to the game last night. Keep pounding nails, let's go.

You stated he was the best player since the 70’s but you don’t know any players in the 80’s. Before you make a comment like you did, you may want to check your work. Roy had a spectacular career at Rutgers and played 10 years in the NBA with averaging double digit scoring during his career.

John Battle and Quincy Douby were also much better all around players. Both also played in the NBA. Nobody loves Myles as much as I do, but you are making ridiculous comments.

Great column and great perspective from him on the challenges that exist when fielding an almost entirely new roster.
Key takeaway from the article imo: “This team, I know they’ve had some trouble, but all these kids are new,” he said. “I didn’t learn my screen coverage in three months over the summer. They’re still learning as they go.”

In a game he was hurt and wouldnt have played if itcwasnt ncaa
Agreed – – he missed that because he could not elevate – – would’ve grown the lead to 10, but the fast break off the missed dunk led to a three pointer, and it was a five point game. Would not have lost that game if it went in.

Defense is as important as offense. His impact on the defensive end was much greater than Douby or Harper was on the offensive end. Myles actually wasnt a bad offensive player either. Douby was a defensive liability.

Again you look at data when Myles was on the floor and wasnt on the floor it says everything

Myles was terrible offensively but fantastic defensively. Now go watch highlights of Hinson

Which ones are you considering, just the years where we made the tournament with Myles or are you including the year we made it after he left?
The three years he was here. All 3 years the highest plus minus despite not playing as many minutes as other starters.
