Until someone else better is presented, I FULLY endorse Herb Sendek as the next RU hoops coach

I want Herb first but I am okay with Danny as well. Either or..very solid choices who each bring their own strength. I dont see how anyone can argue with either of them

Status of the assistant coaches during the last coaching change became the one item that hurt recruiting and keeping players....It would be interesting to see what comes out of the current assistants who all are still under contract until the end of June I believe. Someone will have to essentially be the person that keeps whatever organization together until we finalize Sendek or whomever comes on board.

I think Sendek is a better gameday coach but Hurley has the recruiting advantage with knowing the area so well.

I'm all in for Sendek because he understands the requirements of power conference basketball and has the contacts to attract assistants that can recruit higher caliber players.

I'd be happy with either Hurley or Sendek. Don't know enough about some of the other names.

Difference between the two for me at this point: Hurley has the higher ceiling, lower floor than Sendek. Ending up with Sendek and a higher floor could be a great result for us.

And not that it matters more than the on the court stuff, but the national media would be really supportive of a Sendek hire. He's well respected.

Hurley, Sendek, Lonergan - Ill take any of them

Danny will be first up - they will make him say no again

Hurley would definitely be the more glamorous choice, based on name alone. Would definitely create more of a buzz in basketball circles. Hopefully, his contract demands are not completely unreasonable.

Rather Sendak, Amaker, Lonergan. Why not Dunphy? Danny has not been lights out at Rhode. Not as good as predecessor and Bobby Hurley has already lapped him.

very high reward tho....and he brings to the table being a NJ guy..much easier to rally the state behind him. He is polarizing, there are people and coaches who hate him..but I see that as a good thing actually

6 years coaching and 1 NIT appearance. If his name was Jones he would never be discussed. Is St. anthony's currently relevant?

I'm in the Sendek camp.

Can someone remind me---was the main sticking point for hurley last time that he wanted a long term (like 7 years?) contract and we didnt want do lock that in?

re: Hurley - While you can't deny the family background and connections he has, it doesnt seem like that did a ton for bringing in local (NJ/NYC) talent at RI. There's 1 maybe 2 guys on their team that are from within an hour or two of this area.
I realize that could be different if he is trying to convince them to stay home vs come to RI, but who knows for sure. You could have said that when he was the asst back in the day and the local connection didnt do 'that' much.

Why is Sendek available ? What ties does he have to New Jersey ? Does he know what our current facilities are like and would he be willing to help fundraise if asked ? Can he (or someone in his circle ) do a good job of reaching out to youth and high school players and coaches to make them look at Rutgers as THEIR team ?Not saying he is a bad choice--just looking for some info.

From Pittsburgh. Coached at Providence. Coached at Kentucky. Coached in Midwest at Miami of Ohio.

In many ways the perfect RU candidate.

Sendek was a part of Pitino's incredible staff at Providence in 1987 that included Jeff Van Gundy, Stu Jackson and Gordon Chiesa.

I'd say he's the safest choice for the job. Based on what he's done throughout his career and at different schools, he'd at least get the program back on its feet. That's got to be the first objective.

Danny Hurley is my number 2

What has me concerns is he hasn't won at our level yet...something Sendek did

A high risk high reward situation with DH

Also like that he coached here before. That matters to me and hitting the ground running.

Go with an "ascending" young coach such as Archie (not Sean) Miller, not a "descending" old coach such as Herb Sendek.

He had decent success at NC State (not including when he played UNC or Duke though).

I think Hurley overplayed his hand with the 7 years even though he knew the job was mammoth because of facilities...that was the big problem, now we at least have a plan to construct them. Hurleys star is still bright but not quite as bright as it was

Archie is not coming and want the herb man. Won at major conference.

Won? At NC State? Ok. But not enough as I recall. He'll do if our aspirations are to be a mid-level program, sure. But if we're hitting the reset button, let's be a bit more ambitious.

Cronin would be number 1 on my list if it was realistic. Seriously doubt it though.

Agree with this. He might listen. Would require major bucks and would likely be using us for leverage. Assume his health problems last year would not be an issue.

Let me repeat this

Herb Sendek went to five straight NCAA tournaments at nc state in the ACC where Duke and UNC get two of their 5-7 bids every year

He won 400 games as head coach and took three programs to the NCAA and was coach of the year in three different confrences

No one else has his resume...on out radar. If he can project that into RU hoops, please sign me up
