Urb Meyer told Ash to take RU job over Syracuse

Funny comments:

The whole Ash/Rutgers thing doesnt make sense for either side.
I feel like somehow they both are in overvtheir heads, and lack a quality reputation .

Fluffhead!"

Let's come back to this in 3 years
when we’ve one more bowls than Rutgers does conference games.

Fly, Eagles, fly...down, down the field! "

Fortunately RU is familiar with the basement. That’s where your sorry program lived for so many years in the Big East and for decades before that.

Did he even need to be advised to do that? Do you want to coach a jv team or the varsity?

Of course he did. Syracuse might have the worst football program in the power 5 with no potential for improvement.
Yes, The Cuse is dead in the water! In fact every team that was in old Big East has fallen off dramatically since joining the ACC including MIAMI and Virginia Tech. BC has gotten swallowed up also. Their in a diluted Conference. RU is in the best shape out of all of them and now we wait for the revamped administration to instill a new footprint in Rutgers Football, which is being done as we speak! Only gonna see major improvement from here on!

BC, Syracuse, and even Miami don't get enough quality walk-on's. Obviously those guys don't win games for you, but walk-on's play a huge role in the daily grind and weekly prep.

Nebraska has a huge Walk-On program. And it's a huge benefit to their program.

What in the world has happened at Boston College and Syracuse ? When they went to the ACC,did anyone see them falling this far ?

This is just more proof why Urban Meyer is considered one of the smartest men in football. Ash was wise to listen. Syracuse is a sewer.

You've gotta be a complete moron to take 'Cuse over Rutgers right now.

So true. Syracuse FB looks like it is destined for futility for the near future.

If I didn't dislike their fans so much, I might actually feel sorry for them.

But they rubbed our noses in it in the past. So I say screw them and hope they suffer long term.

I'm not really surprised that Meyer encouraged Ash to take the Rutgers job.

I think the more interesting comment in the NunesMagician column is that everyone (with the exception of Art Briles) told Dino Babers NOT to take the Syracuse job.

Babers is an Offensive Guru. . . He's perfect for Syracuse. . . He will make a high flying offense, and he'll parlay that into a NFL Opportunity or another P5 program.

That's how I feel too.

A lot of people on this board don't remember how good Northeast football was up until the mid 80's. Pittsburgh had a few years when they got the top recruiting class in the nation. Same with Penn State. WVU played for National Championship during the Major Harris days, and Syracuse and BC were perennial top 20 programs. To me, Syracuse has felt biggest impact in Rutgers coming respectable.

Every bitter cuse fan comment just makes me laugh that much harder. I seriously love how they constantly contradict themselves and can't admit that the last 14 or so seasons have, you know, actually happened.

-the cuse mantra through the years:

1991-1998: Yay, this is going to last forever! Rutgers? Whatever.
2002: Rutgers, hah, a joke!
2004: Rutgers, heh, never go to a bowl or ever beat us again
2006: Rutgers, one-year wonder
2008: Rutgers....just got lucky for a few years
2010: See, told you so...
2012: ...yeah, but we're going to the ACC!!! Rutgers to the B1G?? Hah, never happen!!
2014: *grumpy mumbling noises*
2016: *face beet red, making hissing noises under breath*

...their vitriol-filled denial is pure entertainment.

Agree Babers can turn it around for Cuse in the short term and give them an exiting Offense for some years, but what about the Defense? I just don't see the vision for CUSE to be successful in the long term or BC either. Like I mentioned before, they are in a diluted Conference. They don't stand out any longer. Now with Nortre Dame in the mix, they fall even further behind in the recruiting trail. I have no clue why a player would choose the CUSE at this point when there are far more better opportunities out there! BC is a Catholic institution so maybe that sentiment brings in some Catholic boys, but to what degree? The ACC has swallowed them up both up in my opinion!

If he can do that over up there far beyond where the White Walkers from Game of Thrones live, then he will be able to get a better job elsewhere but that is a high risk, high reward game.

On an unrelated note I saw a guy today with a blue and yellow shirt that just said 'Partnership for a Buckeye Free Nation'

The Formula for Syracuse is simple. . . High Flying Offense. . . and focus the defense on packages like Nickel/Dime.

As long as the Offense is high flying, they'll be able to recruit well at QB.

As long as you recruit well at QB, Syracuse will be competitive.

No rutgers is in no better shape. Sorry. All the schools are revamping just like rutgers. There will be improvement for them too. Hilarious that you guys think Big Ten money makes you better than everyone else in the Northeast. You have to win too

That was adorable

We will have bigger recruiting budgets, better facilities, better marketing, which will lead to (already has) better players, which will lead to more wins (which it already has over the last decade).

The huge money disparity will only make it all better...for us. And worse for the also rans that surround us.

You need good players or your system doesn't matter. Syracuse doesn't have good players and they continue to recruit very poorly.

I frequent the Syracuse.com board...... They say now that when Cuse was looking for a head coach their fans were just about 100% against hiring Ash..... Could be true....they absolutely believe they got the better coach

The fans are a little bit down with the early recruiting, admitting RU got off to a better start, but feel that RU will get a ton of decommits, as per last year.... Makes for interesting reading

Them being against Ash is like us being against Belichek.

Hard to be against something that was never an option for you.

Perhaps the only other people he asked were posters on this board. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Thats fine but no one wanted Ash in Syracuse. Unproven HC and defensive guy. You don't know if his formula works. It might take 3 years before you guys find out. If he's bad, you start all over again. If he's good someone else will take him. Im fine with SU football not being a destination job. We are too good in other sports to worry about football so much. Have fun putting all your athletic hopes into football. Your best senior dominate team will get you to 8-4 at best.

Agree. The offense will be exciting and their fans will be wacking it over putting up 70 points vs bad teams like they used to do to us in the 90's. But long term you need a defense and when I watched Baylor play teams with real defenses and they in turn couldn't stop anyone I wasn't impressed. And Baylor was running that O with stud QB's from TX. We got the right guy for us because not only is he a D guy himself, he's bringing the offensive overhaul we've sorely needed for years. Both sides of the ball will be better off. Cuse will still suck on D.

Its really simple. Rutgers is in the Big 10, a conference he is familiar with. Syracuse has to recruit outside of NYS to get players Rutgers does not. If you don't want the recruiting challenges then rutgers is better because there's great prospects already in the state. Ash wanted to stay in the Big 10. Coyle thought highly of Ash but he knew he needed an offensive minded coach. There was no offer from Coyle.

If Ash TRULY builds it at RU in the Big Ten, where is he going? If Dan Mullen will stay in Starkville, Ash would stay here. But according to Cuse fans he sucks so I won't worry about that as Cuse fans are right about everything (I.e. That RU would never be competitive in football, that RU will never get invited to the Big Ten, etc)

Right. The same people who (rightfully) mocked KF, the main reason for those decommitts, haven't yet accepted that he's gone and a more competent staff has been hired. I'm not claiming Ash to be Saban but compared to the STAFF that KF had here we are in much better hands. One or two decommitts? Sure it's possible. Happens everywhere. But not enough to wreck the entire class.
