Did Fran Brown Learn Anything From Schiano? 🤷‍♂️

How does Fran brown get an excellent quatrerback in his first year as head coach, but we keep screwing up the most important position in football. This really irked me when he landed McCord, I love our coach but WTF?
Not sure how you don't know.... $$$$$

Paid for the QB.
Remember that commercial for Smith Barney- they made money the old-fashioned way, they earned it!

When Dino Babers was head coach, there was a very wealthy scrap recycler who gave lots of $$$ to Cuse. I think he got run out by their AD. Wonder where they are getting the money?

Fine, if we dont have the money to buy a blue chip quaterback ( but NIL powerhouse sewercuse does?), if we are developmental program, why cant we develop the most important position on the field. Can you imagine having a quterback like Kyle would do for our program, instead we just pray our quaterbacks are mediocre and dont lose games. Sorry, Sewercuse landing McCord and Wimsatt another QB failure has really gotten under my skin.

The voters ranked them and they beat them. Iowa was ranked too and lost. Was that not real either?
Football 101: poll are meaningless in judging teams. One, there is a lot of bias in them. Two, those who vote are either clueless or don't have time to watch most of the teams they are voting into the top 25. It's all about the name on the front of the jersey or hyped team of the day. A more accurate poll would be something half way into the season.

Now, don't act like you didn't know this. Don't be a that guy who looking to be the wise guy on this topic

We haven’t been able to do it
Let's have a look, skipping the disASHter years and the covid year, which was a wash.

2021:
#19 Michigan- L (ended season ranked #3, 12-2/8-1 and in CFP championship)
#11 Ohio State L (ended season #6, 11-2/8-1)
#11 Michigan State L (ended season #9 11-2/7-2)
#21 Wisconsin L (Ended season 9-4/6-3)
#14 Wake Forest Lost in a bowl game that we were a last minute add

2022:
#5 Michigan L (ended season #3, 13-1/9-0 and in CFP championship)
#3 Ohio State L (ended Season #4 11-2/8-1)
#11 Penn State L (ended season #7 11-2/7-2)

2023:
#2 Michigan L (ended season #1, 15-0/9-0, CFP champion)
#1 Ohio State L (ended season #10, 11-2/8-1)
#22 Iowa L (ended season #24 (11-4/7-2)
#12 Penn State (ended Season #13, 10-3/7-2)

Tell me you are serious about comparing the losses to ranked teams in the last 2 years to beating Ga Tech, being ranked after beating a putrid FSU. Let's check back and see where Ga Tech is ranked at the end of the season, OK?

But the previous poster answered your question. Apparently, McCords (daddy) had some ridiculously high demands for NIL.
You put the purported failure on whom? Greg and Kirk? Maybe they gave it a hard try and decided to cut their losses.

And Jim Harbaugh was at Michigan State for 9 years and he produced one marquis QB. You want Rutgers to beat that?

And, are you watching this season? It's early, but AK is light years better than any QB we have had since Laviano and Nova.

McCord demanded $1 million from Wisconsin & Wisconsin passed, next thing you hear is that McCord is transferring to Sadexcuse. Maybe Fran signed over part of his paycheck to get a QB

That's not a bad bet and a good investment if it pays off. He can leverage that into a huge extension or his next gig.

Why are we talking about NIL for a QB as if we didn't shell out for Wimsatt?
Classic Tv Nostalgia GIF by Sony Pictures Television

The whole reason Wimsatt reclassified to 2021 was to start collecting NIL early like Quinn Ewers did at Ohio State.

If we had beaten a school ranked #23, everyone would be crowing about it. It was a good win for Syracuse, Fran has gotten off to a good start, and he has a QB who is a major problem for anyone going up against them.

They were ranked 23 because they beat overhyped overanked FSU.. ACC supporters who are involved in these various rankings have learned a lesson from the SEC (who started with that stuff and then talked up their conference so much they got teh talent to follow.. and then actually became THAT GOOD. Not a bad plan if it works). Push everyone up so when they lose there are others in the conference who benefit while the losers don't slip as much.

FSU lost to GTech.. but, look, GTech should have been ranked.. so it wasn't a bad loss.

FSU loses to BC.. wait.. look.. BC is ranked after.. not a bad loss.

Syracuse beat a ranked GTech.. wow.. reward them.. they beat a ranked team! When Syracuse gets ranked then GTech can say... hey, not a bad loss.. we lost to a ranked team.

Ranked teams games look better on the TV schedule. These ACC rankings seem to be a shell game.

I mean...come on guys let's not be that fan base lol Rutgers fans shed tears of joy speaking about Rutgers victories over top ten Louisville or south Florida or Cincinnati or whoever was the top team in the big east that Rutgers knocked off after Miami, va tech etc left the conference. Those top ten teams were probably worse than Florida State as a top ten team.. a win is a win..

Coach Prime of the North 😁
Interesting, I will say one thing about this as I can see this topic going off the rails lol...what we are seeing is the differences in communication that may trigger some people. Especially now that everyone seems to get so pissed about different cultures being a part of things that used to be exclusively reserved for one particular culture. Black coaches have been present but if they did speak they wouldn't speak like this. This type of speech is normally reserved for the players. Mind you, the coach from Oklahoma State and whoever else can have epic rants and meltdowns but they communicate in a way that we are used to big time coaches communicating in. Coaches that speak like fran brown and Deon will be becoming more and more prevalent, just as women's basketball players like Caitlin Clark and rappers like jack Harlow will become more prevalent...I don't think anyone's feelings are wrong, these are natural feelings, human nature. But we have the ability to think critically and understand where these feelings are coming from...

Those victories came late in the season when team have established themselves as bad, good, or great teams. Rutgers wasn't playing an over-hyped team... well, maybe USF. 🤣

Not triggered at all. Regardless of race, some fans and players prefer coaches like the NIU coach and Ryan Walters at Purdue. This is football, not WWE, but whatever one person likes, another may not.

NIU Head Coach--Praise your players, your coaches, your culture.

And Ryan Walters preaches--respect the game, the preparation, the opponent (regardless of who it is), play as hard as you can (sounds like Greg):

After beating Indiana last year, no smack talk:

I don't think it's about race...it's about the way they communicate and carry themselves. Yes I agree people prefer the more docile, humble and appreciate the opportunity type of coaches. But brown and Deon, lane kiffin, the Oklahoma State guy, these are different personalities. Their type of personality looks different in different cultures. While we as sports fans are used to the fiery, flamboyant communication style of one culture. Seeing a college coach speak like this in a press conference is new and might rub some people the wrong way. Unless I'm unaware of something else coach brown did Maybe in his tenure at Rutgers. I don't believe he's doing anything wrong (besides being a coach at Syracuse lol)

Got it. I was trying to prevent a thread derail-LOL. The problem with coaches like Deion, Kiffin (don't follow him closely except I know he wears a dumb visor and is a bit cocky), Gundy (hate him because he watches a certain news channel?), and perhaps Fran Brown (too early in his tenure to tell), is that people love to see smack-talking coaches fail. Similar thing with Brian Kelly (a total asshat and never looks in the mirror). you

Exactly, Kelly is a real piece of work lol...funny because when he first got to LSU, he tried to communicate in the way he thought people from Louisiana would relate to. With a fake southern accent referencing his "family". The way people communicate things and their demeanor is crucial in whether or not the message is well received or not.

Agreed. IMO, to players and fans, is just be real. Ryan Walter, Greg Schiano, Thomas Hammock, Matt Rhule, etc are all respected coaches, but even Greg rubs some people the wrong way. And Fran Brown is just starting out and defining himself as a HC.

Speaking to a GT fan, who is not a total yahoo, he said GT fans were scratching their heads over what Fran Brown said in that clip above. GT's head coach is a nose to the grindstone, straight shooter type of coach. Did Fran Brown twist or misinterpret something the GT coach said to make it bulletin board material? IDK.

But the Vanderbilt QB did the same thing when Brent Pry of VT compared Diego Pavia to Penn State QB McSorley--he was being complimentary, but Pavia turned it all into a WWE rant post game. Whatever, dude.

Total BS
Fran Brown convinced him to go to Cuse.
And this will result in them possibly winning the ACC.
QB throws for 400 yards and 4 TDs vs. the #23 ranked team in the country.
You are wrong. Right from the horse's mouth: It was the coaches (not just Brown), NIL and he does not like stiff competition- he saw Syracuse as the easiest route to winning because of Syracuse's pillow soft schedule. You can debate this all you want, but this is straight from McCord himself.

"McCord said his decision to transfer to Syracuse was driven by his relationship with the Orange’s new coaching staff, as he has longstanding relationships with Syracuse head coach Fran Brown, offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon and quarterbacks coach Nunzio Campanile."

“Coach Fran Brown, I’ve known him since I was in middle school,” McCord said. “I played football in South Jersey, and he’s a South Jersey guy. So he was at Temple, so he was always local, and he told me when I was in like 7th grade, I think he was like, ‘You’re gonna be special, man. Wherever I am, I want to be your coach.’

“And then Coach Nixon, who’s the offensive coordinator, he was in Philly with the Eagles when I was growing up, and I played youth football with his son. I was the quarterback, his son was the running back. So I’ve known Coach Nixon since I was 5 or 6 years old. And he recruited me when he was at Baylor, and obviously it didn’t work out, I went to Ohio State.

“And then the quarterback coach, Coach Nunzio Campanile, who was the head coach at Bergen Catholic up in North Jersey, wanted me to come up. He was on me in like 7th and 8th grade saying you could come up and go to school up there and he wanted me bad, but obviously I stayed in Philly. So kind of the three coaches that I’ll be working with there, I’ve known them for five, six, seven years and I’ve known Coach Nixon pretty much my whole entire life.”

That said, McCord acknowledged that NIL was part of the recruiting process once he entered the portal.

“Schools know they have X amount of money and they have to distribute it accordingly. Each guy feels like they have a certain value and they set themselves at that value and I think a lot of it is weighing the pros and cons,” McCord said. “But I mean, it’s crazy. I talked to some of my guys from Ohio State, and hearing the numbers they’re getting from schools. And they’re trying to compare and ‘OK, I know I can get on the field here, but the money’s not as good as it is here.’ I think it’s nuts with NIL and the way things are right now, it’s free agency.”

Asked if Syracuse’s favorable 2024 schedule played a part in his decision, McCord said he felt like he would have an opportunity to win by transferring there.

“Yeah, I mean, they said, with the guys that they’re gonna bring in, some of the guys they’ve got coming back, we’re gonna be able to make a serious run at it. And their recruiting pitch was, ‘Listen, we’re a quarterback away from being a serious contender in the ACC this year,’” McCord said. “And I looked at the schedule, and I saw it and I think it’s true. I think there’s definitely an opportunity for us to go out there and win some games.”

Tell me you didn't move the goal posts, and other posters can throw the flag. Nunzio was on staff before Fran got there, and he was under contract. So Fran did not hire him. He hired Nixon. But IIRC, those coach were hired before McCord came available.

But you can't rule out what McCord said about NIL being important AND he wanted an easy schedule. There you go. It was all three.

I think we are both picking at nits here. He was not going to come to a mid to lower level B1G team, especially where he was not guaranteed the job.

Do they even realize that their schedule is MEAC level ?
At this point they can inch up the top 25 if they win with that schedule
I think we would love to be ranked on the cusp of the rankings with a few easy games in front of us before a rough stretch of games

Since mid June, Sewercuse has lost 6 commits between the 2025 & 2026 classes with half of them being 4* per the TOS composite.

At least one was academically at risk and two FL commits apparently never had serious intention of staying committed to Sewercuse when Fran took their verbal pledge.

Here are some interesting comments, one from the local rag and another from a poster on their boards.

https://www.syracuse.com/orangefoot...florida-its-gonna-be-real-hard-to-decide.html

"Williams wasn’t sure recruiting attention would ever come. He jumped at his first offer and committed to Louisville in November. He decommitted after Ole Miss offered in December. Syracuse followed with an offer, and Williams committed to the Orangemen in April.

He remains committed to Syracuse, but that’s not likely his landing place. He would like to stay in Florida. Last year he wasn’t sure he was going to get any offers from the Florida schools. He now has a scholarship offer from every Football Bowl Subdivision school in Florida, with the exception of FIU. He’s currently intrigued by Miami and Florida."

https://syracusefan.com/threads/cb-...lipped-to-florida-7-31-24.181405/post-5072188

"Some interesting info for you on Demetrius. As I said before, I live in the same area of Florida as Demetrius. A friend who is a local high school coach asked Demetrius about committing to Cuse. Demetrius shrugged it off and said (paraphrase) “It’s early yet. I committed to see if it would increase interest. Kinda like dating a girl, other girls find you more desireable if you’re dating someone else”

Greg didn't entertain the academic at risk kid and would never take commits from players that are not all in. Did Fran learn anything while working for Greg?

Additionally, one has to wonder whether Fran's RU recruiting benefitted from having Greg as a closer. These are Chris Ash level 1st time head coach mistakes from a supposed recruiting prodigy.

-------------------------------------

And for our laugh of the day:

"We need to start acting like we've been there. If we keep acting like Rutger's fanbase, that's exactly what we're going to reap."

https://syracusefan.com/threads/cb-...lipped-to-florida-7-31-24.181405/post-5079805

They can only dream of recruiting strong classes that are tight knit and not full of potential land mines.
What do you mean, GS wouldn't take academically at risk kids. You must don't know his recruiting history. FB will do it his way, 9-3 and if he get a win in the bowl. His first season will be double digit wins. Let's see what he does in the off season and next season. He spent more time with Matt Rhule then GS or Georgia, think he would give MR more credit for his development
