Was it worth it?

We could play Baylor and learn more

Playing Princeton made more questions than answers
Perhaps not. Would Baylor find our weaknesses and expose them. This game wasnt about Princeton winning by 8. It was about Princeton finding our weaknesses, making them obvious and exposing them.

Baylor would have beaten us by playing their game and we wouldnt learn much other than Baylor is 15 points better than us.

We learned absolutely nothing positive in this game because it a ridiculous test against an unorthodox team

A mess that put a L on the schedule before we can find out what we are about

What a spin zone lol

I hated this game but a team like Princeton you can definitely learn from. That is the only potential positive.

Would you rather us be 5-0 playing cupcakes having a set rotation that isnt correct and then find out in December things need to change.

This team needs to know NOW who can and can not play together. We need to know NOW what type of pkay gets your minutes taken away.

You need to listen to Colonel Jessup (i think i have it right).

Will not necessarily be a quad 3 loss
Neutral site, sweet 16 team returning multiple starters.. fortunately the deficit is under 10

This RU will win 6 of last 8, total reverse of last year. Loss Will have no effect on NCAA bid
We did miss Paul & Cam in a game like this
Wolf is going to be a star!
Oskar much improved
Offense needs discipline & sets
JMike can penetrate but needs to dish to open Noah , & eventually Gavin

I’d rather not have a Q3 loss which is counted as a Q4 loss in March. Poor scheduling. Half the board understands this. Scheduling is just as important as talent and coaching. Ball dropped

Do you watch Princeton at all? This is their game to a t

Pike went scorched earth at halftime. Minutes are completely up for grab.
I understand what you are saying but it’s different this time. The post halftime group your referring to is going to struggle to put the ball through the net more than any team we’ve had in a long time. And we haven’t been great on offense.

Gavin has a long way to go. He was ineffective
As a 5 star, I thought he would be able to create his own shot vs. Princeton. That was not the case. His defense was bad but that was the same for a lot of the team and kind of expected for a freshman. Still, did not expect Palmquist, a player we coaxed out, to play over him.

5 star doesn’t mean anything to me. I just see what’s out there. Oskar was way better than Gavin tonight. Gavin has a lot to learn and he’s young. It’s gonna take time.

Well, that was rough. Did I miss something? Did Gavin not play because of injury? I know his Defense needs work but I didnt see anybody playing D so at least we might have gotten offensive production.

Agreed, many others sucked on defense so I don’t understand why Gavin couldn’t get on the floor 2nd half. Gavin looked lost but so did the majority of them. At least Gavin can shoot.

This game was a shocker to me.

1. Never expected Gavin to not know how to play D. I expected him to not be good at it.
2. Our guards all need the ball in their hands to be effective and made terrible decisions all night
3. Simpson was benched for D!?! He went under a screen
4. Hyatt was beyond bad. Only rebounding balls that come to him. Game 1 and Oskar playing over him.

What are the odds that 3 starters in Game 1 at half would be benched

This team desperately needs Mag. We can't play Gavin and Hyatt together. one of Oskar, Gavin or Hyatt can be on the floor.

There needs to be a standard. Can't not bench a guy just because he is 5 star. The entire roster knows that there isn't a player that can play without playing hard. If the face of the program Derek Simpson goes under a screen he gets benched in the 2nd half.

I am sure Pike has a pulse on his team and defense is a real issue. You don't build a doghouse based on one half. The doghouse was being built over the past month at practices.

For all who are so tied into this being a Q3 or Q4 loss and what it means for the balance of the year are in for a looong year. Let’s see what the season plays out to be. If a loss to PU in the first game of the year keeps them out of the tourney, then we had many other issues with OOC opponents and in the B1G. This was one game, granted not ideal game to start, but if this game defines the year, gonna be a long one.

Things Baylor wont do. Probably not targeting Gavin knowing he won't get through an off the ball screen. They aren't putting a 3 point shooting 5 out to make sure Cliff is away from the basket. They aren't finding the weakest defender and isolating and have their bigger player bully towards the basket..

Baylor is playing their game and winning because they are better than us.

B1G coaches are mostly game planning towards our weaknesses. Not all rosters are equipped to fully expose us completely but you know teams will do their best.

Some of you are still defending this game and that’s comical. Frankly, it probably won’t matter. I don’t see this team doing much. Very low percentage shooting team. I don’t want to hear about our “depth.”

Pike needs to be find his rotations, you dont do that against Princeton, you do it vs Boston U and the like

I bring baylor up because if you are going to have a loss and Pike likely knew this was a loss you might as well get beat by a top program. Game served no purpose because you cannot bring young players in and expect them to thrive vs Princeton who is extremely well coached. Add the fact that a few of the older players believe they are better than they are and are better than Princeton and that is a bad combo

Those teams don't expose weaknesses. You end up finding out too late. We almost didn't make the tournament Year 2 because we were so busy trying to find out if Jaden Jones or Hyatt were options. it took way too late for him to pull the plug.

We were so lucky he eventually figured it out

Pike knows the weaknesses....one of them is recruiting and that is why guys like Palm and Hyatt play so much and why Derek is being highlighted as one of the best on the team. He has no one else. They have to play even if they are not good enough

You can highlight all the ways PU exposed us YET our coach didn’t make any chances in scheme only in personnel.
Maybe if we tried something else to work against our deficiencies we could have done more in this game. Or really was our defense which sucked.
Pike loves is man to man defense hey when you don’t have the horses you used it doesn’t work. Looked eerily similar to ND game when they spread us out and isolated 1:1 to bring Cliff away from the basket. Terrible.
I was disappointed in the offense but we had much quicker pace there, missed a ton of layups, and refs certainly didn’t help. More concerned about defense

We lost this game. We could have won the game. At half I expected to win. I felt even better about our chances when i saw the 5 he put out.

We could have learned a lot a out our team and still won. Down the stretch we didnt make plays. We didnt go in to halftime with a 6 point lead because we missed so many easy shots.

REBOUNDING!
Rebounding is about desire and toughness.
They had it.
Rutgers did not.
Princeton outrebounded Rutgers by 8.
Princeton had 15 O rebounds.

FAST? What good is fast if you can't put it in the hoop?
Fast misses do not result in wins. Derek, JMike, Noah...uggghhh!
Hyatt 0 for 5. Double yuck!

Exactly. We’re not going to see another team like Princeton for the rest of the season. There’s really very little you can take away from playing this team moving forward. Just baffling.

we were discombobulated because there was no leadership and no belief we could win and no real purpose. A constant changing lineup with no defined roles. A bunch of experienced players playing like dogdo for the majority of their time

a mess as I said my recap. So nany things messy that I cannot believe it was Pike led team so I am apt to toss this aside for now as an one off.

I mean that rotation got exposed against Depaul, and Lafayette, and UMass, and almost lost to Lehigh, and got beat by 35 at Illinois. If we had gotten beaten by Princeton in game 1 that year instead of *barely* squeaking by #302 Lehigh at home, would something have somehow been different?
