When GS left students applications where on the uptick.. Close to regularly sold out crowds, which means more revenue on merchandise and concessions.. We ended having to buy Flood, and Herman out. Then we had to hire a more expensive coach and a new athletic director. Was it really worth it - when you consider Narduzzi probably could have been had for 2.5 mill. Pay me now or pay me later is real

Imagine if Pernetti offered the job to PJ Fleck instead of Kyle Flood. Flood would probably be prepping his WMU team for a NYD bowl right now.

How many times do we have to do this? Time to move on. This like the 5,000th thread on this.

If Greg had turned down the Bucs, we're not having this conversation, if you want to play the "what if" game.

The State and Press were breathing down Rutgers' neck to cut athletic sending in 2011 (economy still sucked, state had a budget crisis looming) when Greg bolted. I honestly have no idea why Permetti would have been allowed to get Narduzzi for 2.5 million...I'm don't think Greg made that much. I'm not even sure Narduzzi would've come unless he saw an investment in athletics, and at the time any investment that was being made was hemorrhaging money.

Rutgers lost out when it could not come to terms with Mario Cristobal, an alpha male who recruited well here, and has the respect of players. we lost out, he lost out, and everybody was worse off for it, though coaching under Nick Saban and gaining a national championship ring probably was good for him, and will facilitate his chances for success when he finally gets another opportunity.

Consider how much money Hobbs is bringing to the university in terms of fundraising, and he's more than made up for the buyouts. Julie wouldn't have been able to do that. And things like the RWJBarnabas facility... would never have been conceived.

Flood? really?
OP is illustrating that we were NOT better off going cheap with Flood. I don't know why he chose to title his thread as he did. I'll add this "begging the question" crap (if that's what you call it) to the mysterious titled threads to my pet peeves here.

Instead of:

"Was RU financially better going cheap with Flood?"

go with..

"RU was NOT financially better off going cheap with Flood."

Then make your case instead of pretending you are wondering if we were or were not.

An appeal: People.. when you make thread titles.. be clear, not coy. Thank you.

Should have hired petrino in 2013. If Julie did that she would still be here

she actually mentioned something at a court club meeting about a guy like Petrino is a guy that of course as an athletic director you strongly consider but at that particulary time it would be tough for a school under scrutiny like Rutgers to do it

no but we could have had Narduzzi in 2013 or better yet Herman who were both targets of Julie, but donors balked at paying up and Barchi couldnt be bothered at the time

Yep. So she considered it and didn't do it . Got fired .

The grown-up thing to do was to hire Bobby Petrino, but everyone was afraid of what the mean kids at The Star-Ledger would say.... f*****g pussie5.

NOPE - there was never a chance of that happening ...

January 6, 2012 Petrino's Arkansas team won the Cotton Bowl - and finished with an 11-2 record - #5 in the nation - and it would have been impossible to even get Petrino on the phone

On January 31, 2012, Flood was hired to replace Schiano,

... and then 2+ months later ...

In April 2012, Petrino was involved in a motorcycle crash - and - then Petrino was out of a job
then Petrino became unemployed .... (and temporarily untouchable until the dust settled)

Petrino was a real possibility in 2013. But we kept flood for 2 more seasons . People here will tell you those 2 seasons set us back about 5-7 seasons total.
Those 2 and first 3 under ash. For that blunder we deserve it

Seem to recall that the real "almost" along the lines of a "Dump Flood and stop the madness" effort
- was a pretty close encounter with the possibility of Dan Mullen of Mississippi State - story was that the pot was coming to a boil ... but then it cooled

don't think the Petrino thing was ever a real genuine serious possibility
- 2013 he did a more than decent job at Western Kentucky ... so his one season at WKU concluded ...
- and then January 9, 2014 he is announced as back in Louisville
there might have been a window of opportunity to entice him - but not much - & it would have taken far far more money than anyone would have approved - he knew he was going to be able to get back in the big time eventually - it just happened to be sooner because Strong left and opened up a very ideal next step for him.

Oregon will hire Mike Leach and beat Washington and USC like a drum every year given all the resources at Oregon. Personality-wise, a match made in heaven. Long ago Oregon replaced California as The Land of Fruits & Nuts.

The Flood hire was penny wise and pound foolish even at the time, but moreso in retrospect.

I get that Schiano left us in the lurch at a bad time in the recruiting cycle, and that Flood was the guy who could provide stability to preserve the recruiting class. But we really should have slapped an interim tag on him and done a real search. Announce that he was the presumptive HC pending a search, and then do some real due diligence. Or even hire him on a renewable 1 year contract with reevaluation based heavily on the strength of his recruiting classes as we headed into the Big Ten.

Even with the fool's gold year of 9-4 in 2012, it was clear that the year ended poorly and the recruiting had dropped off sharply. Finishing 6-7 in a weaker AAC conference in 2013 with another poor recruiting year should have been the end of it, with a coaching search initiated and a new coach brought in for 2014.

In the end, we wouldn't spend the money, and were content to let Flood gradually erode the foundation of the program until we could start getting Big Ten dollars. I don't think Barchi and Co. really understood how much damage could be done by going "on the cheap" heading into a big step up in conference competition.

with 20 / 20 hind sight and funds to spend:
- it would have been better to go with someone other than Flood\
- We may have lost a few recruits but a Narduzzi or Cristobal would have led to better future results
- Flood made sense for our financial situation at the time and the need for stability

So how much did you Petrino-tards put up to bring him here in 2013?

Oh, that's right ... a big pile of nothing. So you don't get to talk about it now like you've been vindicated.

It'd be one thing if we were actively hiring, like last year, but we weren't and that was all on whatever donors got gun shy. I'm 1000 percent sure those big donors aren't here running their mouths right now. So time to let that go.

These posts are aggravating. Flood was hired because the institution did not give a @&$) about the football program. If they cared they would have invested in a legit coach, not Kyle Flood!! They had a golden opportunity when Flood was let go to bring in a legitimate head coach with experience. Instead they bring in another experiment on a shoe string budget for at least 3 years potentially 5!!!!

What amazing, proven candidates were available last year and how many were pining for Rutgers?

The Flood hiring was garbage, but the Ash hiring made sense just fine. Maybe it pans out, maybe it doesn't ... same as for every CFB program, including blue bloods with all the resources in the world. Stop being such a whining twit.

Rutgers being cheap was the reason Schiano left. Was told less money would be available for him and more importantly his staff.
Flood was hired not because he was the best. He was hired because he was cheap.
He wasn't fired after 2013 because Rutgers/Barchi refused to pay up for a complete staff.
Finally, Trenton told Barchi to spend more and get rid of that disaster.

Why the pessimism? He did a great job at Arkansas and Louisville, why not here?

You said he would put us into the conversation with OSU and Michigan. Sit back and think for a second ... is the only thing keeping Rutgers out of that conversation our coach?

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Petrino would demand better OC & DC and more importantly he would bring in kids that may not fit the Rutgers mold.

The dollars lost are coming in the next 2-3 years with attendance. The revenue lost will be a lot more than a couple millions. This year, the season tickets were sold on hope but will be tougher next year.
