I come over to the site today........ and the most recent post is from April of 2017. Nothing refreshes, nothing changes. I'm logged in. Never seen this before.

Maybe you switched to sorting posts by title instead of date?

How did I do that? And if I did how do I change it back?

When you're looking at the list of threads, there's a black bar at the top with "Title, Start Date, Replies, Views and Last Message" in it. There should be an arrow next to one of them, which shows what's being used to sort the list. Click on "Last Message" so that it has a downward pointing arrow. That should get you back to where you want to be.
