Why are lacrosse games at Rutgers Stadium?

Best thing about Yurcak is that it’s open during football tailgates to take a leak . Especially for the women.

Lacrosse games were moved to HPSS so that the stadium would be a multisport stadium instead of Football only. This allows the Athletic Department to book the capital cost and maintenance of the stadium to a multisport line, instead of football specific. Without this accounting change, the Football program would show a loss, or smaller profit.

I think that many college athletic departments charge stadium costs as a multisport item precisely because it makes the financial results from football look better. At least that's what I've been told.

Yes. You are correct.

And now that the NCAA has supposedly given up on the idea of having it in a really big pro stadium maybe we get it back here someday.

I went a number of times in the late 90s early 00s.

What RU has going for it is that the location is a day trip for just about everywhere lacrosse is big, Maryland, Long Island, NJ, Mass,. Philly, Upstate NY. That can't be said for Foxboro or Baltimore.

Maybe I’m reading into the posts too much but it sounds like you guys are making this into a bad thing. It’s a nice facility for lax and the expensive stafium gets used more. What’s the downside?

What was the attendance this past Saturday?

It was 701. In a stadium that holds 52,000+. That's why some people ask why the games are played there, I guess.
I don’t think the same expenditures are made on staffing as a fb game if that’s what you mean. And close down the upper tiers - 10k, Audi Club - 1k, South Endzone - 10k. You have 31k capacity. Yeah, I get it, still too big for games which I guess draw ~2k typically, but I don't see it as being a problem.

The move was heavily done because of TV time. The stadium is set up to broadcast games in a much better way.

Once the weather gets nice we will see 4k-8k per game. Our season average is 1800, but the early season games attract die hard fans and families of players.

The football stadium looks like crap for lacrosse on TV because the have the football gridlines on the turf plus the lacrosse lines painted on top and barely visible.

By this logic, they should have a couple classes in their somewhere. Boom.....general ledger takes a small hit and no more funding issues for athletics. .

Yeah but it is set up for better HD tv exposure as opposed to the other option.

They should go to LED lines.. the tech should be there.. have configurations for soccer, lacrosse, football.. dodgeball.. graduation... whatever you can think of.. lay down addressable lighting on a plain green field. -copyright ME if no one else has that alrteady

DOH.. of course OREGON either has this or will soon...:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

That is actually a pretty brilliant idea.

That is really cool. I wonder how it would perform in regards to drainage, players getting tackled on the field, traction, etc.

If only it were real, and not an April Fools joke. https://watchstadium.com/news/oregon-led-field-april-fools-day-joke-04-01-2016/

indoor stadiums would probably work best.. sunshine can be too bright for led to be seen.. I'd imagine.

I actually thought we'd see this in the Olympics with Samsung laying down LED screens under the ice.

But they do - at least in the Hale Center. There are (at least there were) athletic training practicums there.

It wouldn't be possible here because the bubble is outdated and there's no seating but Ohio State uses its indoor football practice facility for early season games before moving outside into the stadium later in the spring.

The Big Ten uses their football stadiums - Ohio State, Michigan, And well JHU doesn’t have football so their lax stadium is essentially their main stadium.

Stop making this complicated.
Field conditions at Yurcak in Feb are not conducive to being an optimum playing surface. Going forward Yurcak will be perfectly set up for regular in season lax and soccer.

Never heard anything before regarding accounting issues and stadium use. Wouldn't surprise me since Rutgers does some crazy accounting in charging certain areas for facilities and their use. The word ridiculous often comes to mind.

It poured nearly the entire game, thankfully the stadium has the overhang over the top few rows of seats to keep many dry, I was very surprised that the attendance was as high as it was, considering the conditions.

MIchigan has a new lacrosse facility so no more games in the Big House. And as I said, Ohio State plays indoors this time of year. Only Marryland is in the same exact situation as RU as far as playing exclusively in a football stadium

Hopkins does have Football and their football stadium is Henwood Field

Is that different from their lax stadium which is Homewood Field? Not sure I saw two separate stadiums on TJHU's campus when I attended the B1G tourney in 2016. Figured both sports shared the same facility since it's two different seasons.
