Why can't NFL teams hold leads?

I think some factors are the talent gap between teams is narrow, the pass-oriented offenses, and offense-friendly rules. Some of it is coaches getting too cute and moving away from the run when they shouldn’t.

Football is a "game of momentum" as they say.
If one team starts to settle down into a coast, and the other team gets fired-up, then dramatic things can happen.
The lines are most vulnerable to exhaustion and also to heroics
I've been on both sides where I was unstoppable, and where I was short of handling an impassioned player refusing to give-in.
A favored passing game where defense is almost hand-cuffed is a wild card
Of course with NFL being what it is, they might use a little helper at the half.

One reason why the NFL doesn't interest me as much as it used to. I know they want to dumb the game down to widen it's appeal, but I like it better before they started trying to make it like a video game.

It's silly to me that all the "greatest" NFL quarterbacks seem to have played in the last fifteen years...
