One was a blown switch coverage. Idk whose fault it was (either someone switched and shouldn't have or didn't switch). Were the Va Tech 2 point conversions too easy? Seems like we were not prepared to defend those.
10 Hate the tush push. Give the ball to Brown and let him pound the rock.
Real head scratcher..among many. That play cost us at least 20 yards of field position. Have to take off the conservative shackles sometimes.Yeah the Dremel fair catch on the free kick was weird to me. The point of the free kick is to set up a return.
I remember '06 and was it Thompson flying over engaged linemen to make a great tackle in the backfield?
Love this analysis! Thanks for making the time to share this.We controlled the ball for just under 40 minutes. I think overall we did a great job coaching, but we made some big mistakes that luckily dindt cost us.
The screen call was elite coaching, the RPO with multiple layers was elite coaching, the play call on the INT was elite play calling.
The defense knew VT was going to run the vertical and out route on the final play (they needed the first down). We showed zone, blitzed the corner, but we were in man. If Beam does not pick that ball off, the safety has a legit shot to also. It was a BEAUTIFUL play call. Beam blitzed right in the path of the out, so he was there if the out was thrown.
You said we motioned away from the RPO which doesn't make sense because a RPO is just a run and a pass play. Both plays can be different. You can say you don't like the pass play they called but again you don't "motion away from a RPO".No such thing as what? Im confused.
The RPO we had success with we motioned to the option and wheeled up the sideline, with a TE coming across the formation. On the 4th and 1 we motioned away from the RPO choice (I believe with the thought of catching them off guard. The playside LB did not crash and stayed, which is why I think Athan should have given it. It then allowed a collision on the TE and a player on the QB.
Go watch the play .... We ran a presnap motion away from the rpo. we had been running that option to the rpo and running up the sideline for a level choice. We ran the roo with 3 instead of 4 options and probably made the wrong read on the run.You said we motioned away from the RPO which doesn't make sense because a RPO is just a run and a pass play. Both plays can be different. You can say you don't like the pass play they called but again you don't "motion away from a RPO".
Dude. Pre snap motion. You said we motioned away from the RPO which doesn't make sense because a RPO is just a run and a pass play. Both plays can be different. You can say you don't like the pass play they called but again you don't "motion away from a RPO".
Motion is often a tool used to show coverage. You said we motioned away from the RPO which doesn't make sense because a RPO is just a run and a pass play. Both plays can be different. You can say you don't like the pass play they called but again you don't "motion away from a RPO".
Me too. I remember the RU section was at the other end of the stadium from that play and having to watch the video board to see the play and not really appreciating how great a play it was until I got to see it on TV later. Was an amazing play.I was at that game. Thompson was Superman. UNC fans were in shock.
Their corners are big and strong and we're able to force us outside and give us no room to operate. As much as the throws to Fletcher were wide open due to the play design, the vertical throws had no chance. Back to the drawing board on those plays. All were blanketed and it seemed like most were thrown out of bounds. What gives? Weak play design? Meanwhile we saw VT behind our defense on at least 3 throws (was it more?).
Last year I wondered if Gavin was coached to throw it out of bounds (since he was so consistent at it), giving the appearance that we were looking to throw deep.
That fumble by Fletcher still bothers me . That would have changed things . He will learn and in a couple of days it may not bother me anymore 😀the ball is the program , the players know that .
I know we are not Air Raid, but this seems to fit.Their corners are big and strong and we're able to force us outside and give us no room to operate.
Ray Lucas once talked about throwing verticals, even if you do not complete them, because then defenses have to respect over the top. we got a ton of underneath stuff because the dbs stayed over the top in man ane zone.
I
Can you explain why our run game was stifled when we were supposed to run wild on rhem?
No there was just pre-snap motion. That has nothing to do with going away from a throw or run.Go watch the play .... We ran a presnap motion away from the rpo. we had been running that option to the rpo and running up the sideline for a level choice. We ran the roo with 3 instead of 4 options and probably made the wrong read on the run.
Why not just take what the defense gives you. Those are low risk throws to a TE for positive yards. I would take that all day.As much as the throws to Fletcher were wide open due to the play design, the vertical throws had no chance. Back to the drawing board on those plays. All were blanketed and it seemed like most were thrown out of bounds. What gives? Weak play design? Meanwhile we saw VT behind our defense on at least 3 throws (was it more?).

Basically any throw but the vertical ones. The vertical throws were closed for business. It felt like he had 6 incompletions on those throws (need to watch the game again). Too many low percentage throws (no percentage in this game). Why not just take what the defense gives you. Those are low risk throws to a TE for positive yards. I would take that all day.
what? We pre snap motioned away from the play in question. Most of the other RPOs we motioned to the play, and then ran the player vertically as a read choice. No there was just pre-snap motion. That has nothing to do with going away from a throw or run.
We were 0/5 deep and 16/18 on the rest I believe.Basically any throw but the vertical ones. The vertical throws were closed for business. It felt like he had 6 incompletions on those throws (need to watch the game again). Too many low percentage throws (no percentage in this game).
Meanwhile VT had them open but drones couldn't connect.
Yea not sure what he is trying to say. My read is the same as yours. And most plays run with that TE action,f rom my recollection, were to the boundary.what? We pre snap motioned away from the play in question. Most of the other RPOs we motioned to the play, and then ran the player vertically as a read choice.
The term motion in football only ever really refers to a pre snap moving of a player.
OK let’s break this down slowly….No there was just pre-snap motion. That has nothing to do with going away from a throw or run.
I was there too with a friend who played on their o-line on the late 60’s. He was really pissed, along with all their other self-important fans. I loved it!I was at that game. Thompson was Superman. UNC fans were in shock.
Not allowed, because SchianoYeah the Dremel fair catch on the free kick was weird to me. The point of the free kick is to set up a return.
I never understood the difference between Sun Tzu and Captain Obvious.

You clearly haven't played football before.OK let’s break this down slowly….
Any motion pre snap has a direction.
Each play also has a direction.
The point @gef21 is making (not that he needs more help making it) is that on this particular play, the pre-snap motion was in one direction and the play we actually ran was in the opposite direction.
Tripling down I see.You clearly haven't played football before.
There has to be some disconnect in this conversation....it has to be in how we are using terminology and what you think I mean when I say motion. You clearly haven't played football before.
Can you get the telestrator out and go John Madden on him please? There has to be some disconnect in this conversation....it has to be in how we are using terminology and what you think I mean when I say motion.
I honestly was just debating about using screen castify and recording a voice over like I break down for players. Can you get the telestrator out and go John Madden on him please?
Any comment on the 4th quarter defensive collapse?1. The trips tight bunch formation killed us yesterday. We gave up both long TDs and another long run because we lost the edge. That has to be a priority fix ASAP.
2. Fletcher is a legit offensive threat, but his blocking his not great yet.
2a. Our TEs have to improve in blocking, but we also can not put them in a position where they have to block elite pass rushers.
3. Miller is legit and teams very much are worried about his top end speed.
4. Strong had a coming out party, we need more of that.
5. Long struggled with separation yesterday. On the first sack he rushed his window and covered himself. Athan saw him, but then had to cover and go because Long ran behind the spy.
6. Jaborne is playing recognition faster, but he is still learning. He has potential to be elite.
7. Man we missed Powell and Bailey. Glad to have them back.
7a. I miss Toure.
8. Athan allows our offense to get to the next step of being successful.
9. I like when we throw the ball off of actions. The outside vertical game is not there for us, think we went to it too much.
10. 4th and 1 give it to one of our RBs.
11. Way too long of a FG to attempt. Odd choice.
12. We still do not blitz a ton, I am interested why. I think we wanted to keep 2-3 over the top to not let drones beat us vertically. A few times we did get beat in coverage, and it did not hurt us.
13. Overall this is a great game to learn from, and I hope we do.
14. The game very much reminded me of the UNC game in 2006. Gut check game and we came through.
Yea not a bad day when yer opponent is in all out trying to stop it.They sold out to stop the run. 8 in the box consistently. They also played their keys to stop our rbs. This is why those rpos were so open. The LB came in on the Rb every single time and the TE was wide in the flat.
We did also run for like 140.
When Dennis Greene coached Randy Moss on Minnesota , he went deep at least once the first series. Sometimes twice. He said it moved the D backs 10 yds back. Obviously it helps to have Randy MossTheir corners are big and strong and we're able to force us outside and give us no room to operate.
