Were the Va Tech 2 point conversions too easy? Seems like we were not prepared to defend those.
One was a blown switch coverage. Idk whose fault it was (either someone switched and shouldn't have or didn't switch).
The other was a very nice throw and catch.
Also hate this play - except the one time they had a weird hand-off to Monangai and he ran around the pile for a FD.
Real head scratcher..among many. That play cost us at least 20 yards of field position. Have to take off the conservative shackles sometimes.
You said we motioned away from the RPO which doesn't make sense because a RPO is just a run and a pass play. Both plays can be different. You can say you don't like the pass play they called but again you don't "motion away from a RPO".
Go watch the play .... We ran a presnap motion away from the rpo. we had been running that option to the rpo and running up the sideline for a level choice. We ran the roo with 3 instead of 4 options and probably made the wrong read on the run.
Motion is often a tool used to show coverage.
A player goes in motion and a defender will move along with him thus providing a clue.
Me too. I remember the RU section was at the other end of the stadium from that play and having to watch the video board to see the play and not really appreciating how great a play it was until I got to see it on TV later. Was an amazing play.
As much as the throws to Fletcher were wide open due to the play design, the vertical throws had no chance. Back to the drawing board on those plays. All were blanketed and it seemed like most were thrown out of bounds. What gives? Weak play design? Meanwhile we saw VT behind our defense on at least 3 throws (was it more?).
Last year I wondered if Gavin was coached to throw it out of bounds (since he was so consistent at it), giving the appearance that we were looking to throw deep.

Their corners are big and strong and we're able to force us outside and give us no room to operate.
Ray Lucas once talked about throwing verticals, even if you do not complete them, because then defenses have to respect over the top. we got a ton of underneath stuff because the dbs stayed over the top in man ane zone.

That fumble by Fletcher still bothers me . That would have changed things . He will learn and in a couple of days it may not bother me anymore 😀the ball is the program , the players know that .
I never expected that. Any “disappointment” in the run game, even relative to last year, would honestly be an exaggeration if you stop and think about it.
Sure - we collected 256 yards on the ground compared to 153 but that difference mostly came from two defensive breakdowns that we capitalized on that went for big plays of 55 and 34 yards (great block by Kyle too on that QB draw). That accounted for 89 of the 103 yards difference. Beyond this - the last 2 drives of last year’s game (49 rush yards) accomplished the exact same thing as our final drive this year (14 rush yards net of a 7 yard loss on the kneel down). The difference in yards was really about having an open field and a couple more minutes to eat clock. Finally, we took 3 sacks in Saturday’s game on intended pass plays that account for lost yards included in the net rushing stats. I get that we ran more plays - but even still. It was really a few single plays that make the rushing numbers in last years game stand out so much.
No there was just pre-snap motion. That has nothing to do with going away from a throw or run.
Why not just take what the defense gives you. Those are low risk throws to a TE for positive yards. I would take that all day.
Basically any throw but the vertical ones. The vertical throws were closed for business. It felt like he had 6 incompletions on those throws (need to watch the game again). Too many low percentage throws (no percentage in this game).
Meanwhile VT had them open but drones couldn't connect.

what? We pre snap motioned away from the play in question. Most of the other RPOs we motioned to the play, and then ran the player vertically as a read choice.
The term motion in football only ever really refers to a pre snap moving of a player.
We were 0/5 deep and 16/18 on the rest I believe.
Yea not sure what he is trying to say. My read is the same as yours. And most plays run with that TE action,f rom my recollection, were to the boundary.
OK let’s break this down slowly….
Any motion pre snap has a direction.
Each play also has a direction.
The point @gef21 is making (not that he needs more help making it) is that on this particular play, the pre-snap motion was in one direction and the play we actually ran was in the opposite direction.
I was there too with a friend who played on their o-line on the late 60’s. He was really pissed, along with all their other self-important fans. I loved it!

Totally agree with 2a. You can't have a TE who's not a great blocker matched up with the opponent's best edge rusher in a passing situation. That was practically a lookout block.
I believe RU was in the red zone something like 7 or 8 times and had a time of possession of almost 40 minutes. The offense was fine taking what it was given. To me the issues were not throwing it verticle.....rathet they were executing /decision in the Red Zone which would have easily put the game away.

There has to be some disconnect in this conversation....it has to be in how we are using terminology and what you think I mean when I say motion.

I honestly was just debating about using screen castify and recording a voice over like I break down for players.
Sometimes I think about doing that anyways.
Any comment on the 4th quarter defensive collapse?
Is this something that was just a freak occurrence or is it something systemic?
The final score really should have been something like 40-7 as we beat them in TOs and had double their TOP as well as majorly outgaining them in offense until the 4th quarter.
When Dennis Greene coached Randy Moss on Minnesota , he went deep at least once the first series. Sometimes twice. He said it moved the D backs 10 yds back. Obviously it helps to have Randy Moss
