"As two of only three Rutgers wrestlers who posted a winning record in Big Ten duals last season, Scott DelVecchio and Ken Theobold could be seen as keys to the lineup.
Instead they mostly will be seen on the sideline, voluntarily kept there to redshirt in a move made by coach Scott Goodale that seems like a head-scratcher until you realize the reasons behind it."

It gives Theo a good development year as well as Del. Not a head scratcher when you have Hirsldo and Dippery to use

Ryan Dunleavy wrote, "While it is virtually unheard of in most other sports to take a non-injury redshirt midway through a career, the long-term benefits of a fifth season make it an appealing option to wrestlers." This is very inaccurate and shows he just does not know wrestling well. Ever hear of Nico Megaludis? Zain Retherford? Rick Durso? CJ Cobb? just for a few...this year.

Theo would be top 20, but not needs a year to refine and muscle up to make his best threat at the podium. He plans on a lot of open tourneys to keep sharp. Dippery is very experienced. Van Brill wants to wrestle anyone anytime. Happy Dippery got stronger as day went on during Sunday. I think first match he just froze.

Giraldo redshirted last year, so no reason to use DelVecchio and Giraldo in same year. Both are top 20 guys and may not be podium ready. Neither can go up or down a weight, so this make sense for the team and the wrestlers.

Josh, what is inaccurate? You listing Nico, Zain, Durso and CJ Cobb is what he is talking about.

plus...I look at a future lineup with Giraldo- Delv-Ash-Dipp-Theo- Gentile lewis and Bak- plus either Makall or Patz from Pburg going at 125. Tough

somebody gonna be sitting in the future..4 yrs of Ash @41 puts Giraldo @49(along with Dipp,Theo,Gentile)-dont think he makes 33 after this season

ScarletGrapfan...file my comment under "shoot first, aim next". You are right i did not read the parts you highlighted well enough. Thanks for pointing it out.

The article stated:
“Tyson Dippery wrestled (32) matches last year as a redshirt,” Goodale said, “so if you take advantage of it you can really get a whole season’s worth and then some.”

Where did he get the chance to wrestle all those matches? Were all the matches in tournaments not sponsored by NCAA?

Open Tournaments and they are sponsored by the NCAA. One good thing about wrestling, when you redshirt you have plenty of chances to wrestle in open tournaments. And you can wrestle other teams starters, not just other redshirts.
