Scarlet is our official color....as is black?

How did white become the alternative?

Is tOSU the Scarlet / Pink??...or do they use Gray (their other official color)?

Just wondering.

PS We should drop black/ or white from any official status / just go with Scarlet...and frankly, I DO GIVE A DAMN!

Our official color is Scarlet. And only Scarlet. Frankly, I don't give a damn about any of the other colors, because no famous character from Gone With The Wind was named after them. Black and white are just accents used with Scarlet, but are not recognized as a school color.

As other have said, the official color is Scarlet. Per the Visual Identity manual, the complimentary color is white (not black). Plus, the other team needed to wear something.

I think black should be more predominant than the white, but both used pretty equally. that's my take scarlet/white/black.

What do you mean? Black is a primary color, like scarlet & gray:

PRIMARY COLORS
"The primary colors for the Rutgers Visual Identity System are Pantone® 186, Pantone® 431, and black."

White is used as well but I don't recall seeing anything that black shouldn't be used with scarlet. More on this:

"Rutgers' official school color is scarlet. Rutgers scarlet is often used in conjunction with black, gray, and white."

I totally misunderstood the question, I was thinking Scarlet vs. Scarlet would be too confusing....

I think you guys are confusing color palettes (used for things like printing stationery) with the school's official color. See the link below:

Official Color: We Are Scarlet

Rutgers' official school color is scarlet. Rutgers scarlet is often used in conjunction with black, gray, and white. The Pantone® color system equivalent for Rutgers scarlet is Pantone® 186.

Wait a minute - I thought we were the Chrome and Salmon Knights???

Scarlet and white, scarlet and black, doesn't matter, great colors that Rutgers should always be able to make great uniforms out of. It could be worse, what if our teams showed up in something as hideous as these, then we would really have something to complain about.

Lets be happy that in 1869 an Orange flag couldn't be found and a scarlet one was used instead, making Scarlet the school's color .
If that orange flag was found Rutgers might still be called the Chanticleers, and the spring game
called the Chicken vs Egg ( Eggs wearing White, vs Orange Chicken).

That's true for the school. While it only addresses the Block R specifically, for athletics it limits you to Scarlet or White. Obviously that says nothing of uniforms, but I think that it shows how they want athletics to appear.

Athletic Marks: New Brunswick

The New Brunswick athletic teams are known as the Scarlet Knights and are graphically represented by the Rutgers spirit mark.

The “R” may only be reproduced in red (Pantone® 185 or 186) or white. The “R” may never be reproduced in black. Exceptions include unique “Rs” created by Intercollegiate Athletics for special games and events (i.e., the stars and stripes “R”). When reproduced in red or white, outlines for the “R” may be reproduced in red (Pantone® 185 or 186), white, or black
.

No one is debating we have one official color, and that color is scarlet. But you can't very well have two scarlet teams. The complimentary colors are additional "primary colors" - black and gray for the school, and including white for athletics.. The complimentary colors exist for just this reason - because everything cannot be red on red on red.

Nope. We are the Only Scarlet Knights. We could go with Scarlet vs. Telracs for the Spring Game. Telracs can wear Pantone 681 if there is such a thing. Then all we have to argue about is black, gray or white pants.

To answer the OP. Black Lives Matter complained and didn't want to be associated with Scarlet. So we switched to white.

That would be a really good idea, except for the fact we already are just Scarlet.

Guess my 7 1/2 years as an undergrad were in vain. Of course that was in the drug induced 60's...so who knows what colors we were wearing- much less who we were playing.

Ok....so I phucked up. Wasn't the first time....won't be the last!
