Why is there a student section?

So... you signed a petition pledging to not attend the game, but you're going to the game.

I want my money back. Seriously.
I signed because I wanted to voice my displeasure with something done. Is that wrong? Should I not go to the game? I also buy my student season tickets so not sure what money you want back. It's not the athletics department and the students aren't blaming them. We love Hobbs and what he's done. But it doesn't mean we can't be upset over having a good thing taken. But please if you'd prefer I'd not go I'll do something else with my Saturday.

No free student tickets = no future support. We need to GROW the base, not shrink it.

We showed up for HOWARD and stayed until the game got out of hand. And yeah you know what last week was bad with the students leaving, but we just watched New Mexico put up 21 points like it was nothing and our QB who we've watched get picked apart for the past two years have three straight three-and-outs. It kind of takes all the energy from you when it looks like another blow out.

A lot of people whose tickets are in the upper level would love to be down in the lower level. It should be available to them. Give the students a section in the upper level that is not on camera so they can come and go as they please without leaving a highly visible part of the stadium empty for televised games.

Not true. Fans in the upper deck between the 20s actually like those seats, and would NOT prefer end zone seats.

Also to another point. You said there are plenty of fans in the upper level who want to move down? Well how about they move down into the opposite endzone first. Since the student section was certainly more packed than that pathetic display across from us. No offense meant to those who were there in those sections, but honestly it was a sea of empty rows with a few red specks.

We have fcs level student support. That us a choice the students make each week. They aren't interested.
It's as if you don't watch college football outside of the top programs. Go watch Pitt, UNC, MD, Virginia, BC, Syracuse against their patsies and tell me how great the student turnout is.

RU doesn't have a problem with student, or overall attendance. If anything, given the history of RU, our attendance is pretty freaking good.

Most of what I'm saying in this thread is tongue in cheek. But the underlying notion that the students should show a lot better in B1G games is important. Boycotting the first B1G game of the season is very poor form and should result in some policy changes that may be adverse to the students' current gameday situation.

So your suggestion for combatting a perceived lack of student attendance is to...restrict student attendance more by getting rid of a student section... You really don't know when to quit do you?

How about this. I will post a picture of the student section at kickoff for every conference game this season. And then we could figure out if there is a problem and what to do about it.

You do that. And I'll post a picture of the rest of the stadium and we'll compare. You won't like what you see.

With respect to charging students for tickets, how about a deep discount? They'll pay something, an incentive to show up, but not get priced out. They can always change the size of the section (and I think there should be a student section) based on sales.

Have always said, if you want butts in seats, give something away.

Like if your ticket is scanned by the time the national anthem is sung, you will automatically be entered to win $250 (2 winners per quarter).

Probably a bad example, but something like that.

You can't mess with anything until the stadium sells out and people get turned away. Until that time, you just hope you play well enough that the kids want to come see you play.

Doesn't mean they won't show anyway. I signed it, I'm still going. You should cut your losses now on this and admit it was a dumb idea. Honestly, you suggested getting rid of a STUDENT section at a university filled with STUDENTS and that is run by STUDENT tuition. Let that sink in.

Why did you sign it if you are going? Illogical.

Take a picture of the north end zone and upper levels too, will ya?
Now that we're getting into conference play, the north endzone will be an extension of the visitor's section. I can't wait until I have enough points to get out of that cesspool.

I explained why in a post after. I'm unhappy about the Alley getting shut down, but it's not the fault of the Athletic Department. I pay for student season tickets and will support the team regardless of how bad it gets. But at the same time I wanted to make sure that my voice was added to the group trying to lobby for the Alley to be reinstated because I think it should be.

In my day you would have chained yourself to the doors of the CASC until your demands were met.

Kids these days...

Only if you do so for the rest of the stadium as well, and only for the 2nd or 3rd quarters. We already know what the problem is during the 1st quarter for most of our games, and 4th quarter (especially blowouts).

The premise of this post is completely wrong.
Our student section is packed for big games and well over half full for almost all games.

I always figured the student section existed so that a large mass of rowdy crazy rambunctious young adults can be in one place to feed off each others energy and at the same time not disturb the older crowd. If that is the reason does it really apply at Rutgers Stadium? Because what I see is a three-quarters empty bleacher that only gets emptier as the game goes on. Students should be able to receive complimentary tickets but it looks kind of dodgy to have a lower level section completely or significantly empty every game.

And now with the students possibly planning a boycott, Rutgers needs to get people into those seats. The students are far too demanding and disinterested in being at the game to Warrant an entire section dedicated to them.

Student section was close to full last week in the first half. No idea why so many left in the 2nd half though. Stupid idea to not have a student section though - section rocks for any decent game, if we're competitive, kind of like the rest of the place.

I actually thought most would leave after getting down 21 pts to NM like you mentioned, but was surprised because from what I saw, the majority left after RU had already come back and it was a close game. I even commented to people at the game about the timing being strange on the mass exodus in a close game. I think it was in the 3rd quarter sometime.

Yeah...

I think you don't know how this works.
You're telling me that if students were to chain themselves to the CASC doors until the Alley was reinstated we wouldn't get called entitled? Or told that what we're complaining about is insignificant and we should worry about bigger things? It absolutely would happen and more than likely students would get fined for some obscure reason if this were to occur.

The best I could figure was that they thought it would turn out like Howard and left content that we had a lead.

forcing people to pay for something there is little demand for and was free prior does not seem like a good idea to drum up more demand....

Issue student season tickets to any interested students for free. Charge an unused ticket fee for any that are wasted.

Hell, half the football team is just sitting there each week as well.

Right, and it's those football players who the general student body is refusing to support unless their demands of university-facilities being set aside for the specific purpose of illegal underage drinking are met. Real nice.

If you have a cogent set of demands which can be reasonably met, are willing to engage in discussions toward compromise and can articulate all of these things then nobody would call you "entitled".

Your generation is clearly too many degrees of separation from the days of truly successful organized protest. Ya'll need to brush up. You might actually be able to learn something from Old People.
