Why is this year's team (specifically) struggling

The past few games, minus a few quality quarters against Nebraska and Purdue, have been mediocre at best for the RU team. When they deliver a true stinker (and the Michigan State game was an unqualified, uninspired stinker) folks often fall back on favorite tropes about CVS/the team that sometimes have truth, but mostly don't. Some of the most frequently cited:

1. Freshmen don't see playing time for CVS. (This is simply not true, and one only has to look at the PT both Noga and Zippy got last year to prove it. Or, for that matter, Tyler Scaife, Michelle Campbell, Tasha Pointer, Matee Ajaon, Davalyn Cunningham, Chelsea Newton, the list goes on. Freshmen take time to adjust and learn a system, that happens at every school).

2. Freshmen do well at every other place but RU. (See the list above, but also happy to provide many examples of highly ranked players at other schools who either never pan out, or take a year or two to fulfill their potential. My current favorite is Megan Walker for UConn, ranked #1 out of HS. Folks recently said that if Davenport went to UConn she'd be freshmen of the year. Well Walker as rookie only averaged 5ppg and 3rpb.)

3. CVS does not recruit 3-pt shooters (Noga is a shooter. Arella is a shooter. Alexis Morris is a shooter. So was April Sykes, Cappie Pondexter, Mauri Horton, the list goes on. There are, in fact, TWO people on the team right now shooting 40% from 3-pt range--Arella and Mael).

4. CVS can't coach offense (well, the offense has rarely been a thing of beauty, and she's always prided herself on being a defensive first coach. I think "can't" is too strong, but it's hard to argue with the team's struggles).

Now moving on to what is ailing this year's team, which I think is actually fairly different from what would ail last year's team (or the one before it). I'd love to hear everyone else's thoughts too.

First off, every single starter I think is better, sometimes significantly so, than last year (and in KK's case, two years ago). Arella is now a legitimate B10 POY candidate, Mack has blossomed into an energetic, double digit scoring starter, KK is steady and has improved her shooting, Mael is a steady presence in the lineup, and Jordan has transformed herself into a real post threat, when not in foul trouble).

On the other side, the bench has regressed. Both Noga and Zippy have been plagued by injuries, and when on court, dont' seem as fearless as last year. Alexis Morris still hasn't broken out for reasons I can't understand. Maori has not adjusted as one would have hoped in her first year. Singleton actually has given some good minutes, but she's not ready to be relied upon in big games. Maddox and Migliore are now used sparingly.

Beyond that, some of the main struggles I see, would love to hear other thoughts:

1. The team can get into habit of watching Arella go one on one.
2. Inconsistent showings by everyone, but especially if you're not named Arella, KK, TMack.
3. Lack of killer instinct, consistent high level of play. Mich St game they just looked slow.
4. Rebounding is not a strength, even with Arella and Mack being very good rebounders for their size.
5. Only one true post threat in Jordan, often in foul trouble.
6. Defense has often only been meh, rarely great or suffocating.
7. With CVS unwilling to play bench, the 55 becomes less effective and less useful.
8. 3-pt shooting has been cold as of late, and can often be ugly--team is easy to zone. I'd like to see Arella and Mael take more 3s, Mack take less.
9. Was the soft OOC schedule not the proper way to prep the team? Hard to know in hindsight, but they've seemed unable to adjust as well as in previous years to B10 play.

A few comments -

For your first list of "tropes", I 100% agree with 2 and 4; she typically does not specifically recruit 3 point shooters, but of course she recruits good shooters who can hit the 3. I have repetitively said that RU is better from the 3 than most folks realize, although we have never had a bunch of good 3 point shooters at one time, at least in the past. But there have been some notable 3 point specialists at other schools, players who only get playing time because they can hit the 3, and I do think Vivian passes on them because they would not fit into the rest of the scheme.

Vivian's use of freshman is more complicated. Perhaps it would be better to say that she does not like to depend on freshmen if she can possibly help it. The transcendent players (Scaife would be a recent one) of course played; sometimes due to number of bodies or the fact that the freshman are - even at that point - better than an upperclassman will earn minutes. But over the years she has made comments outright that she does not want to depend on freshmen (or reserves) in key moments. I will add that the coaching staff has long denied that there is anything "too complicated" about the system, however, they and past players have equally said they don't "get" the defense their freshman year (that's from Chelsea Newton).

As to your list of current ills, I don't see that many games, but - watching the star, your first point, has always been a bit of an issue going back to Cappie and including Scaife. Also, Vivian has long said that teams over the years do not / did not have the "killer instinct" that she would like and this may be something she just can't quite instill, I'm sure I don't know. Your comment about the "55" is a truism, of course. As to your last point about the OOC schedule, I have no idea but it is an open question. It was not a good schedule. But only the coaching staff actually knows what the players gained from it versus had they played tougher games that might have more likely been lost.

I disagree somewhat with your second point about inconsistency. Except for PSU, Arella has been consistently outstanding. When Wallace is on the floor, she's been consistent, less so KK. But Mack has been wildly inconsistent recently, IMHO, along with Gilles. I love Mack's energy and enthusiasm, but when she doesn't get a call, or misses a shot, she takes herself out of the flow. (And I'm ALWAYS waiting for her to get T'ed up, or get in a fight with someone.) I feel like Maori and Morris don't yet know what's going on.
And yes, I think the "easy" schedule early on hurt them, very much. There were also too many home games.

I think there's way too much credence given to the weaker early schedule. That's the time to blend new players into the rotation, to teach and perfect the 55, offensive sets, defensive sets, etc. It's time to build confidence. I think if we play a much more difficult early schedule, all the team would learn is that they're not ready yet. If the team cared about winning those games, the newer players would get less, rather than more playing time. Then, they would somehow have to improve during the conference games, which would be more difficult because that's when the coaches reduce the number of players in the rotation.

I agree about T-Baby. She has not been consistent during the conference games - scoring less and fewer rebounds. I love her enthusiasm, especially when a great play has been made. However, sometimes, she's so busy posturing while hear down court, she doesn't realize that the other team is pushing the ball right behind her. Of course, as expected, other players' averages have dropped once conference play began, including Jordan's and Mael's.

It hurts us to not have Noga for so many games, and to have Morris not quite confident enough yet. Morris is a shooter who IMO doesn't shoot enough. I like the minutes that Singleton has been giving us lately.

Overall, I'm happy that even though we're not operating as a well-oiled machine yet, we're still 15-3.

Singleton and Wallace have been like statues guarding people on defense and the attitude of our kids is very passive and their is no killer instinct. Northwestern killed Michigan State tonight by 28 at MSU. They may beat us by 40 with the way we are playing.

I think she recruits 3 point shooters but they go to schools with a different style of play. Plus, some players don't want to stay in NJ. Hard to see so many girls from our area playing on others teams.
