Will Flood be back next year?

It seems Flood is hurting his chances of returning next year on a couple of fronts.
1. Record - he needs a minimum of 6 wins and probably 7 to have a strong chance to return. The WSU loss hurts those chances. The easiest wins left are Kansas, Army, Indiana, and Maryland. If we win those 4 we would need to beat PSU or Michigan to get to 6 but both are on the road.

2. Off field stuff - the original incident with the 5 arrests may have been away from Flood and not really anything he could have controlled. The email the professor incident is minor thing as long as he wasn't pressuring a prof to change a grade. Now if the Caroo thing blows up and shows fault then Flood may be on very short leash.

My gut says:
- if they find fault with Flood for the email incident and possibly poor team management with the Caroo incident he will be bought out of his contract. Timing may be determined by how the team is doing. If RU beats PSU and then KS they may wait to see how the MSU and IN games go while saying they are investigating. If RU loses to PSU bad and then to KS Flood may not even make it to Oct 1. With Wilson or Fridge as the replacement temp coach.
- if fault is not found in the email incident and the Caroo incident is not as bad as we think then Flood may be able to finish the season before being bought out.

Now that he seems to have weathered the latest storm, I feel it's bowl or bust. 6 wins and it's hard not to keep him. That being said, I was dead wrong over the last 24 hrs.....

He will not stay here if he does not win Saturday. There is simply no way to 6 wins on top of all of what has happened and a loss to TTFP. The margin for error is nil.

RU finally has cover to can him, the NJ rank and file know of the criminality and that is enough political cover.

The storm is not over if you believe the sizeable body of evidence that suggests there is more to the Carroo story and that the email to the professor was improper, on top of the fact that I see no evidence of control over the program and little reason why more players won't risk everything for the next assault victim.

I really dont know where people are coming from when they say Flood NEEDS to get to 6 wins and a bowl. The powers that be realize this is a rebuilding year with a new QB and revamped O Line & loss of an NFL caliber fullback. Dont you think the AD and powers that be were expecting a drop off this year? Just because you and many fans think the team should perform better every year does not mean the people who analyze the situation and make the decisions based on factors much more wide reaching than wins and losses, will feel the same way you do. Last year we could have easily wound up with 5 wins and no bowl... if the close Michigan and WSU wins were reversed.... so a season of 4 or 5 wins this year....during a rebuilding year would not have been unexpected by the decision makers. I really believe people are way off base by thinking a 6 win bowl season is mandatory.

Oh please. Good teams don't miss bowls in rebuilding years. Look at the rest of this conference, I guess everyone except Indiana, Purdue, RU MD and TTFP is laden with seniors? No we are all just bad teams in the case of the last 3 with coaches totally over their heads. The coaches who get away with missing a bowl are not in their 4th season after 2 mediocre and one horrendous one.

And get out of the bubble, we had 7 arrests, so far, in two weeks, for violent attacks on other students, and the email thing. You think that won't be considered?

The smart question is why anyone is so defensive of Flood with the results on and off the field being so poor.

That's all great and dandy but let me know when he instills discipline to his team. 7 arrests including your Captain and star player. Not the mention we are on pace to be the most penalized team in college. Again. No disipline

This is such bullsh*t.

What do you people mean he needs to "instill discipline?"

Everyone keeps saying that.
WTF does that mean?

How do you "instill discipline" on a senior who has been a model citizen to date and never been in trouble with the law before?

He brought in Rice to speak to the team and demonstrate what can happen when you make bad choices.

What should he have done to Carroo before Sunday to "prevent" this unfortunate and sad situation from happening?

My goodness, most of you are a bunch of friggin parrots who keep repeating the same bullsh*t.

We get it. You don't like Flood and want an "upgrade". (Fat chance with our current budget and President). If that is how you feel, just say it.
But stop with this "instill discipline" crap. It is just an excuse because you are too afraid to say how you really feel, even though on the whole, Flood has done a decent job for a 1st time head coach in a power 5 conference with no previous head coaching experience.

Personally, I like the guy and still want him to succeed. Do I agree with everything he does, or love everything about the results on (or off) the field?
Heck no!
But name me a coach who never gets questioned for some of his decisions.
That is what fans do - bitch and moan as if they have all the answers.
And I have no real problem with that.
But stop with the Fire Flood because of no discipline nonsense.

Unless we get a ton of decommits or we fail to get to four wins and are hopelessly non-competitive in most of our losses, then yeah, he'll be back next year.

I would add that we could get less than four wins and he could still be back. Just saying that if he hits four wins this season, with everything that's happened, that I'm pretty sure he'll be back.

You should probably look up the definition. Could have saved yourself a lot of typing.

I am willing to bet if we don't go bowling he is gone. Way too much has happened in his 4 seasons as coach both on and off the field and the last few weeks has been the chickens coming home to roost. There was never much of a chance he was getting fired during the season. Almost no one does that.

I like Flood personally.

I think he is growing into a better, although admittedly still average, game coach.

But this CONSTANT reference to an "NFL caliber fullback" needs to stop. If we're to the point as a program that the graduation of the fullback factors into the calculus of the prospects of our season, the ship really be sinkin'.

I agree with who say he is gone if no bowl game.

Is it not apparent that The Fullback along with the 3 graduating lineman as a group have left a significant drop off in experience and talent in the ability to create holes and protect the QB. How can you NOT mention and recognize this fact.

Who's job is it to create threads that "help?"

Obvious troll threads should be called out. But what's wrong with this one?

Anyone who communicates with people privately about RU football has been asking this question for 36 hours.

Sure it's "apparent."

What it isn't, or what it shouldn't be, is an excuse for the floor falling out of the program.

Burton was a nice college player. He wasn't Jerome Bettis.

Navy loses a 1,000 yard rusher at the position every year. And plugs another one in like they are widgets. If the position is that critical to this offense's success, figure out a way to get some FBs in the pipeline. Don't lament like Mike Rozier just graduated.

I think he will get a pass (because a bunch of his players got in trouble) this season regardless. Love is patient, so Flood probably has very long rope. So from next year on - as long as he keeps winning 6 games, his job will never be threatened. We don't really care about winning big here. As long as we stay afloat, all is well

I think "no bowl" is a distinct possibility this year. Carroo's status is up in the air, obviously, but it's really starting to look like we're not going to see Hamilton this year and that's an unexpected - and serious - blow. I see basically 3 absolutely winnable games remaining on our schedule and the rest of them could easily go into the loss column.

After the loss to WSU, to get to 6 wins we have to beat all of Kansas, Indiana, Army and Maryland. That leaves us with having to win a Big 10 game against one of PSU, MSU, OSU, Michigan or Nebraska.

Yikes.

Oh my god... Hudson is right. Say this out load 4 times... "We are in rebuild mode and probably won't be bowl eligible because a fullback graduated".

Man, if that's true we have a long ways to go...

Because it's a question that nobody knows the answer to. Not even the people who could make that decision. too many variables.

But see, this is an interesting potential wrinkle in the "Flood's Future" lottery.

We are now down to something like 7 returning starters - TOTAL - after the Carroo suspension and absent Darius Hamilton.

So if you have a shitty season because 7 players get arrested and kicked off the team and your second best player is injured, do you get a pass on the year?

Good news there is that Maryland lost to Bowling Green last week and Pedd and Meat-chicken are beatable--though both on the road.

If HCKF loses to either of Kansas or Army, he should be fired on the spot in the locker room in front of the team, media, recruiting hostesses, janitorial staff and anyone else who wants to watch.

Does the future of HCKF hinge on beating Indiana? lololol...not exactly the opponent we would have thought would define the next 3-5 years of our program.

Because it's a question that nobody knows the answer to. Not even the people who could make that decision. too many variables.

And that is the metric going forward for thread creation? Threads have to a) make sense b) have definitive answers and c) shoot pixie dust out of unicorn's backsides?

There would be no threads here if you got your wish...

And Washington State lost to Portland State.

I'm tossing the Temple win over PSU. It's starting to look like Temple might actually... ack... gag... um... be a good team this year.

reading comprehension certainly isnt a forte around these parts.

I read fine.

You're putting too much weight in the graduation of a fullback. Obvious point eludes you.

We lost our best DL to an unexpected injury and might not make a bowl.

We graduated 3/5 of of our OL and might not make a bowl.

We graduated our Fullback? What are we, 1976 Nebraska running the wishbone?

Yeah, but Portland State returned their fullback

Ummmmm. We also lost a 4 yr starter at the most important position on the team? Don't believe anything I wrote put any more emphasis on the FB than the other key losses I mentioned. Where you got that I don't know.

I'm not going to over think this one. Me thinks (if all settles down) that this season, yet again, boils down to the last 2 games as long as we pull a rabbit out our ass in one of the swing games. Some pretty prominent people (which I'm sure you are well aware of) still support the guy and that's the proverbial ball bearing in the bypass line. I think they still want to give him a pass this year but just need a reason.

Of course, if another player goes all Clockwork Orange on us than Kyle better proof read that resume.

I thought it was the 7th Fetzer Valve, but... whichever.

It is highly likely that next years team is worse than this one so if this is a rebuilding year what would you call next year? Floods recruiting is a disaster and has been for years. Discipline problems are going to be a small issue in comparison to the talent problems that Flood is creating.

Exactly.

Hermann reportedly showed complete support for Flood at practice today. So I think he's going to be, mostly, given a pass on this season. As I said earlier, all that could change if recruits jump ship in droves, or if our performance in games is so poor that we're not even competitive (outside of OSU and maybe a couple others).

And I think fans should be careful what they wish for. If we do cut Flood loose now, and we can't replace him with a big enough name (which we cannot right now), then it's a gamble that things will actually improve (recruiting-wise and competitiveness-wise). It's wishful thinking which is not the same as good business.

IMO, it would be better to upgrade the coach when we can afford a big name with good assistants so we can have a relatively good chance of getting our money's worth. Also, it might be cheaper to get a big name coach if we show the current coach a lot of support rather than running him out the door in his first loosing season as coach.

We don't want to wind up with a swinging door policy on coach hires. For each misfire, we might as well add 2-4 years to give the new guy time to get his system in place and to establish trust in recruiting circles in NJ.

Nice non-answer, Mr. Discipline.

So tell me, how would a "real" disciplinarian coach have handled things differently with Carroo?

Bet you don't have an answer (at least not a smart ass one)

It's the last bit that sorta scares me.

As it stands right now, the only thing that Julie is accountable to is her own sense of dignity. As far as Barchi is concerned, she could go out and hire Dick Hertz to coach the football team.

This is why I say - and I've been saying - that Rutgers is a LONG way from "guaranteed success" in football. For us to get to that point, we need a University President who is all about P5 football. We ain't got one right now.

I think patience is our best friend right now. Not an easy thing for fans to have to live with, but it is what it is.
