Woolfolk 13 mins, Reiber 2 mins. Is this the future?

Woolfolk had only 2 pts and was alright on D. Dean had only 2mins with no stats to show. Didn't even remember him playing. Palmquist even got 1 min. It seems that since the Indiana game, Woolfolk has jumped Reiber on the depth chart. I thought Pikes should have given Reiber more minutes when the game was in our pocket. I mean he even put Miller in who was so far down on the bench he had to grab a campus bus to check-in.

Personally I think Woolfolk brings more to the table, but he hasn't really shown it yet against the big boys. You usually have to prove it on the court before subplanting an established player.

He put Reiber in the 1st half before Wolf, he was tentative on O - had an open drive and didn’t take it - and got pulled quickly. I think the reason Jalen went to the hole is he knows if he brings nothing on O his minutes won’t improve much. Dean needs to play w more confidence too.

Hope so. In Dean’s limited couple of minutes ( I was watching closely), he really did try to bang, but he just wasn’t strong enough and the Wake guy was pushing him around. Wake went on a mini-run while he was in, although I don’t think a lot of it had to with him. However, if he’s not defending and he’s not at least looking to score, we now have a better, and younger, option in Woolfolk.

Woolfolk is a faster, more athletic player. He's made the transition extremely fast and leap frogged Dean. Think most expected him to need some time to adjust this year. Dean is trending towards 5 minutes or less the rest of this year when you consider how effective Mag & Hyatt have been playing at the 4 spot.

Woolfolk is a much better defender, He needs to be the backup at the 5. Dean isn't a good defender but is a decent outside shooter. However, on this team, Dean's game doesn't fit in so well.

I noticed that too. Looked like he could have taken a mid range shot too and didn't even think about it.

Dean seems to get a lot more let’s call it “coaching” during games than other guys. Irrespective of Wolf, it appears Pike isn’t happy with Dean this year

For what I see …Dean is a situational player on our roster with the style on how we play. He is a high post center …and you do need one of those to Match up in the big ten ….

Having said that …I think his interior Low post defense HAS improved …but I just think wolfolk plays much better in style and system we run

When wolf came in against OSU with cliff having fouls, he , IMO, changed the game with his physical defense pushing the OSU big further up the lane and making OSU run their sets further out …and they stopped scoring and we can back

I thought he was a big part of solidifying the defense yesterday as well

Woolfolk actually plays like he has been playing basketball all his life. He appears to have been well coached and is coachable (obviously). I assume he didn’t play AAU which might be a good thing for some players.
Didn’t mean for that to sound like I was saying “He plays basketball like a football player.” His positioning and court awareness are excellent. I more so meant in addition to that he’s also big and good at moving guys around.

It's time to start worrying when the coach stops yelling at you. Methinks Reiber and Miller see more playing time when the B10 grind begins.

I like Reiber, but I believe Woolfolk has more upside. I was expecting Wolf to look a bit raw to start the season, but I didn't see that as much as I expected, which is really impressive, given his limited experience.
Since I expect him to keep improving, I think it's a no-brainer to get Wolf as much time on the court as possible,. Especially, since I don't see a drop-off from Reiber.
Obviously, Reiber is a better outside shooter, (though I was a bit disappointed in how tentative he was against Wake. I thought he passed up some shots I would have liked him to take). I also remember some games last year where he came up big defensively, when Cliff was out with foul trouble. But I see Wolf developing into a stronger defender.
And I LOVE his court vision. He's a really good passer, and a big guy that can make passes from the low post, can be very disruptive in breaking down a defense.

He did play at least one year of AAU ball, I believe he caught the staffs eye after defending current starting Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren well. But definitely seems to process the game in a far better way than most freshman, especially bigs.

Situations and match ups. We keep burying guys on this board from game to game when they will be needed again at some point during the season. This team does not have stars this year. Success will be the result of a collective effort and there will be new opportunities to step up all year.

Its interesting that Pike usually goes to Dean first when Cliff is coming out but then eventually AW comes in and plays more minutes. On many nights, Dean is going to struggle if playing the opponent 5 in conference games. He has more of an offensive game than AW has at this point, but you know what Pike values.

Would be nice if Dean could figure out how to turn into instant offense, sink a quick three or maybe two of them when he comes in. Of course team would need to use him that way. Would anyway be a way to bring fans into the game at home if we are ever subdued...

Love wolf I believe he has the most upside of anyone on the team at this point, Dean will have his moments. He will help this team

Agree with you. For someone who was also concentrating on football, he plays kind of like Shaq Carter did as a Junior, with better passing skills and footwork. Way more poised and polished than I expected, with a B1G-ready body. Lots of upside here.

It’s tough trying to impress when you get limited minutes. Kind of feel sorry for Dean and Jalen, but you need to go with players who give you the best chance to win. Maybe during practice they can earn the opportunity for more game time minutes. If they don’t get more playing time, it’s hard to see Jalen and Oscar coming back next year.

I assume Oskar really likes being at RU and on this team. If his decision was about PT, I would think he would have moved on already. Maybe he is truly here for the education which would be refreshing.

I feel sorry for Jalen.

He obviously is losing playing time to Simpson. I don't know what happens at practice, but in games Jalen, at times, has been better than Simpson. I feel Jalen is losing time because the staff knows Simpson is better and he needs development on the floor.

Dean is just flat out being outplayed by Woolfolk on the floor in games. Every game Pike gives Dean the 1st shot off the bench, but Woolfolk ends up "winning" the PT.

He’s done it before. See the season finale against Penn State last year. Dean came in off the bench due to Cliff picking up some early fouls and immediately started scoring. I think that performance in particular is what fed a lot of the off-season Dean hype on this board.

Dean has definitely been noticeably tentative on O this year. Whether that comes from the coaches and not having the green light, or it's a mental block, he repeatedly passes up good looks from three and open lanes to the basket.

I think AW has just beaten him out for the spot. It's a good problem for Pike to have as both can bring something to the table when CO is out of the lineup. Dean is way down against my preseason mpg and that's because Antoine has been so impressive and is way up in my guestimated mpg.

Everyone wants better recruits. When we get better recruits, they're going to play over some of the guys that are already here. It's a good problem to have.
Simpson/Wolf are better players than Dean/Jalen
Yes, people forget that the 7th men in the Eddie Jordan era would transfer to a MAC school and see LESS playing time.

We need depth for matchups/injuries. Pike has also shown that he is fluid with his rotation once conference play starts

He did play AAU. If I remember correctly Rutgers first saw him when he went against Jalen Duren at Peach Jam.

Dean has a better outside shot, but Wolf is better in the post and finishing around the rim

His game is so "fundamental" and is so rare of what we see from incoming players, let alone big guys. Even more amazing given basketball hasn't been his primary sport.

This can not be used as an exhibit proving my initial hypothesis that AAU ruins players "fundamentals" , because he did in fact play AAU.

Woolfolk was a total head scratcher of a recruit when he committed. It’s pretty surprising how ready he is to compete at this level.
