Worst DC Hire in the B1G Ever?

didn't they work together at RU? i think they did in Greg's early years
maybe Darell's network is not big enough

Totally agree, but technically the position had to be posted and he had to apply. Which was worse the promotion or the hire?
I'll stick with D'Onofrio. Did you read that blog and the comments?

With D'Onofrio, you know you are getting bad. But hey, he is experienced!

People forget that Rossi and Robb Smith worked together at Maine, and Rossi had a solid record at Maine. People like to snort and laugh at some of our former coaches coming from small programs, but everyone starts somewhere. Cream rises to the top. Robb Smith was cream. Rossi, not so much, but it was not an awful hire at the time. Wonder if Flood had offered the DC job to anyone else?

Rossi's bio:
"Rossi came to Rutgers after working alongside former RU defensive coordinator Robb Smith at Maine (2007-08). Rossi, who coached at Maine from 2007-11, was promoted to defensive coordinator following Smith's departure to Rutgers after the 2008 season.

Maine annually had one of the top defensive units in the Football Championship Subdivision under Rossi's watch. In 2011, the Black Bears ranked 26th nationally in sacks, 31st in pass defense and 25th in pass efficiency defense.

In 2010, Rossi developed the Maine linebackers and secondary into two of the best positional units in the Colonial Athletic Association. Linebacker Donte Dennis collected All-CAA honors for the second-straight year and ranked sixth in the conference with 108 tackles. In his first season as defensive coordinator in 2009, Rossi's unit totaled 19 interceptions (second in the CAA), led by All-CAA defensive back Steven Baker."

That hire sure is a pretty nuts they basically just hire The worse DC is football..... On purpose!

i am not a Rossi fan by any means. i think he was handcuffed by KF. under a right head coach, i bet Rossi does far better. also, he has learned a lot from RU. people pay to get that kind of experience and he got paid. not a bad deal.

Rich Rodriguez hired Greg Robinson as a DC at Michigan.

He has my vote.
Yea, that was a bad one. After the job he did at Cuse, I was surprised to see him receive another coaching job.

Although, his interviews with the media were classic

Some dude from New Hampshire coached one of the nation's most exciting offenses at Oregon

Wow! Please tell me we play Purdue soon! Get ready for a soft bend and break defense. This is the worst hire I have ever seen. Ray Handley is genius compared to this.

Not gonna happen. Hazel will get fired before we play.

Oddly enough, Ray Handley is actually a mathematical genius and is banned from Vegas casinos for counting cards.

I meant the hiring of Ray Handley. That wasn't so genius.

Hope you and the fam are well, rbled. Have a great new year!

Ray Handley and Rich Kotite both fascinate me....both of them have had absolutely nothing to do with football since the day we last saw them walking off a field. It's kinda sad, really, to think of the years of their life they put into the profession. I always assumed an old coach that flame out at the highest level might go down to smaller levels of the game, the way Joe Walton built the Robert Morris program.

Yeah, I knew what you meant, just thought it was funny. Things are great, living out in Cali now up in SF. Hope all is well with you and your family too.

No, not what you think, G RUnit.

Mark D'Onofrio to Purdue? What is Darell Hazell thinking?
hazell is getting fired after next year and everybody know it. he cant get anybody to take the job. his new oc was the teams te coach. first year they ran a prostyle offense. second year half prostyle half spread. 3rd year spread. the te coach they promoted has only run a prostyle offense. crazy

Loser mentality thread. Be better than that.

Good luck to the foirmer RU coaches. You think they had an uphill battle at RU? I hope they do well at Purdue.

Huh? This was about D'Onofrio going to Purdue. He was probably one of the top 1 or 2 reasons people did not want Al Golden. I am not wishing bad upon any former RU coaches. The fact is D'Onofrio's defenses are universally understood to be abysmal. Ask Temple and d U fans. It has nothing to do with Rutgers.

Well, not only that, there is the little fact that D'Onofrio reportedly started recruiting for UVA when he was still at Rutgers. Thus, not only is he incompetent, but he is an ass as well. Just ask Greg some day what he thinks of D'Onofrio. No, I am not going to wish him well at Purdue.

That's the kicker right there. I can put up with coaches leaving, even leaving abruptly, recruiting against us, etc. But D'Onofrio went way over the line, after having accepted the job from UVA, supposedly using our resources on our grounds to recruit people away from us. That's the mark of a true scumbag.
