Anybody want to do a quick update on how our guys are doing this year leading up to the postseason?

I'm too lazy to google it right now.

Grello, Mulligan and Correnti are all ranked # 1 in their weight classes. Donner is # 2 behind Grello. Mackall is doing ok in Ohio and Paetzel is just coming back from a broken hand so he is unranked.

I can give you what I was able to find.

Alex Mackall (Ohio Kid) - 126 pounds this season, unfortunately Ohio is not required to use Trackwrestling like NJ is so I am unable to get any season info on him. I know he is wrestling this weekend in the Ohio Sectionals which is equivalent to NJ Districts. Ohio has over 600 high schools and crown 3 state champs per weight.

Brandon Paetzell - 132 pounds 6-3 on the season injured in December and will be wrestling in District 1 and Region 1. Is seeded 1st for the districts this coming weekend.

Michael Van Brill - 138 pounds 28-0 on the season will be wrestling in District 29 and Region 8. Is seeded 1st for the districts this coming weekend.

Joe Grello - 170 pounds 31-2 on the season (Bergen Catholic wrestles the hardest schedule of any NJSIAA team in my opinion) will be wrestling in District 7 and Region 2. Is seeded 1st for the districts this coming weekend.

Brett Donner - 170 pounds 29-0 on the season will be wrestling in District 23 and Region 6. Is seeded 1st for the districts this coming weekend. If things go well could see Grello in State Finals.

Kevin Mulligan - 195 pounds 29-2 on the season (Bergen Catholic wrestles the hardest schedule of any NJSIAA team in my opinion) will be wrestling in District 7 and Region 2. Is seeded 1st for the districts this coming weekend.

Matt Correnti - 220 pounds 32-0 on the season will be wrestling in District 26 and Region 7. Is seeded 1st for the districts this coming weekend.

Bonus, a kid I have mentioned before that I still hope to see us bring in. He is a Senior and unsigned.

Mohammed Farhan from Clifton - 145 pounds 30-0 on the season, 4th in state last year (lost 1-0 to Beirdumpfel in the state semi's last year). Will be wrestling in District 15 and Region 4, is seeded 2nd in districts this coming weekend. Of his 30 wins he had 4 forfeits, 1 Decision, 1 Tech Fall and 24 pins (19 in the 1st period). I don't know anything about the kid other than seeing him wrestle a few times over the last 2 years, so I can't tell you how his grades are or how he is as a person but I know he can wrestle.

Van Brill may be another hard hitting New Jersey kid like Theobold and Lewis who turns into a solid D1 wrestler. Looking forward to seeing just that. $$$$

Yeah also a big point scorer for his team with 4 Forfeits, 16 Pins, 5 Tech Falls, 2 MD and one Dec.

Bill didn't mention him above (hope that is only an oversight and he is still coming) but he is ranked #1 at his weight in NJ. Keep in mind that Shane Griffith is un-ranked but just came back from injury at 138 and would likely be ranked #1.

Obrats
Sorry about that. I talked to Scott a few months ago and he is very high on the young Van Brill, very high!

Yeah Griffith back so that weight will be a dog fight for Van Brill. Interested to see how end of season turns out for all of them, especially Paetzell and Mackall. I like Farhan also.

Who is seeded ahead of Farhan?

Mike O'Malley who is 37 - 0, Farhan 30 - 0 and I guess last year's results don't count so much since Farhan beat him in the Districts, Regions, and States. Farhan finished 4th last year and O'Malley finished 5th in State.

I believe I saw Heavyweight Nick Rivera along with either his coach or dad at the Rutgers/Michigan match. Both wearing dark green Brick Memorial HS colored sweatshirts. They were chatting with Coach Pollard before the match. Rivera/Lewis/Glasgow would be the start of a tremendous recruiting class, if it happens.

We are all over Lewis and Glasgow. Lewis has worked out with us.

Glasgow has always been a big fan of Penn State and Cael. If you ever see him in the off season he is wearing a Penn State singlet. Hopefully Rutgers can convince him to stay home.

Head to head should count

Agreed. Rivera/Lewis/Glasgow would be three sticks of dynamite. Love it.

Penn State is really loaded up in the middle weights.. Manville, Joseph, Nolf,.. just to name a few.. Will be really hard to crack that lineup if Glasgow wants to go there.

Sounds like we have some great kids coming in and possibly more on the way.

ONWARDS & UPWARDS!

Little more on Mackall, entering his sectional (equivalent to our district) he is 19-4, would appear maybe he was injured since most Ohio hides have closer to 35 matches at this point.

So far has had 2 matches today and pinned first kid 0:31 and beat 2nd kid 24-6. He is in the semifinals.

I thought he went to a Div2 school in Nebraska to play both football and wrestle.

Correct went to Chadron State is listed on wrestling roster not football. Wrestled 2 tournaments in November but hasn't wrestled since.

So how did they do??? I would say pretty dam good.

Alex Mackall
(Ohio Kid) - 126 pounds
Took 1st place with 3 pins and a Tech Fall, pin in 1:30 in the finals

Brandon Paetzell - 132 pounds
Took 1st place with a pin in the semi's and a 18-3 Tech Fall in the finals

Michael Van Brill - 138 pounds
Took 1st place pinned his way through the tournament (3 pins) with a 2:46 fall in the finals

Joe Grello - 170 pounds
Took 1st place with 2 pins and a Tech Fall, pin in the finals was in 1:02

Brett Donner - 170 pounds
Took 1st place with 2 pins and an 18-5 Major Decision in the finals

Kevin Mulligan - 195 pounds
Took 1st place with 2 pins, 4:39 was the pin in the finals

Matt Correnti - 220 pounds
Took 1st place with a pin and an 18-3 Tech Fall in the finals, time of the Tech 3:16

Matt Correnti asked about his lack of celebration after his match.

"It's still a thrill, but I had to come off calm. (Devin Rolon is) a great kid. I didn't want to come off cocky, or be rude or anything"

Class move Mr. Correnti

Thanks for the recap. Nice that the entire bunch of kids remained focused all weekend. Hopefully more of the same through the regional round.

Grello/Donner

Can either one of these gentlemen make 165 pounds?
Looks like we will have this in 2 years
174: Grello/Donner
184 Gravina
197: Mulligan
285: Correnti

Chadron State? That's awful.

Put Glasgow at 165, and M. Lewis at 157. . .

Paetzell sounds like his hand is still bothering him. He's in a tough spot here. He will have a whole redshirt year of strength and conditioning. I hope he make it through the next two weeks okay. $$$$

Leiws at 165 and Theobold at 157. Giraldo and Dippery at 149.

wng: it appears that 157 is lewis's natural weight. does lewis have a weight issue like giraldo? at 165, he'll rather be small and perhaps not as effective.

If Theobold can make 149 and is comfortable there....
He should compete there.
If Dippery or Giraldo can't beat him at 149, they should move.

I want to have the best wrestler at each weight class...not the best dual team.
Lewis can redshirt next year if he wants (not sure what he wants)

Bringing it back to the OP subject. We move on to the Regions, Ohio calls it Districts but lets just keep it uniformed and call it regions.

Alex Mackall

Mickey OMalley beat Mo Farhsn 3-1 in district final.
Get this-- OMalley is a soph!

Good chance these two will see each other in the Region Finals as they are seeded 1 and 2. Farhan will have to get past a very good #3 seed Nick Esposito, who he beat 3-2 during the season.

Esposito is very good. Named OW at districts. 152 in same region is also tough- Bonsall, Beam, Caravella, Pena
