Wtf was Ace doing on last defensive possession?

The problem with the last possession was Dercack was guarding Pearce. It was a mismatch. JWIll should have taken him. Also, Ace and JWill weren’t in good help position. and left Dercack on an island.

I haven’t seen this many dunks given up by a team in a real game. We improved a lot in O but regressed by much more in D. Hope we make the NIT.

Mismatch for jeremiah too. We don't have a guy to d up a guy like Pearce. And that's not good.

I feel sad for our guys… even embarassed. Permanently. two straight years losing to cake eaters from Princeton who are tougher, smarter, and (get this) better at basketball, than you. And, I get it, basketball is a very democratic game in alot of respects. Any 5 can line up and beat any other 5. But when you see these two lineups next to each other, it should not be close.

It’s sad, really. There’s no good or logical reason for our team to lose to that team. And I feel worst for the guys like Jeremiah Williams. He’s not going to the league. He’s got to live the rest of his life knowing he got his ass kicked by the guy who works in private equity now and lives in a 7,000 sq foot house.

It’s just absurd on alot of levels.

I wouldn’t be able to live with that in my heart forever. “Ya we lost to Princeton. Ya we got dunked on 6 times. Ya we couldn’t guard #1 AT ALL”

Smh

J Williams is part of the problem. Don’t feel bad for him. Feel bad for the fans.

Ya. I just…don’t understand how Princeton is repeatedly kicking our ass
How much time do you have 😀. It is what it is. It’s a bad team with good players. The main issue is the lack of athleticism. The balance of size, speed and strength. Our guys can check one box. That’s why there is always a mismatch.

They are taught what they are taught. Someone needed to overcome that teaching, see the moment and help Jordan. Ace could have been that guy but he’s young and was probably just doing what he was trained to do.

Ace is a limited player and his deficiencies have been laid bare. Seems he was able to dominate in HS strictly because he was taller and more athletic than everyone else. As tall and “quick” as he is, he simply can’t get to the rim. Like, ever.. For this level he is too thin, lacks strength, and can’t go to his left, which makes him a very limited offensive player. When he’s not hitting low percentage circus shots he gets discouraged and doesn’t bring much defensively either.

He is only a “top 5” NBA pick on potential. He is in no way playing to that level now, and quite honestly I’m not sure if he will ever be.

Ace was guarding the wing in the corner as Pierce backed down Derkack on his side of the court. He was sort of in the middle of the two players, trying to prevent a kickout for an open three while also still hoping to dig down on Pierce, but Pierce never got close enough because he stayed in the paint as he backed down.

I am fairly certain that Pike’s game plan for this game was to NOT double in the paint, and to guard the three point line. We actually did a pretty good job guarding the perimeter, as Princeton only went 9-27 from deep (one of their lower 3-pt outputs of the year). But it’s pick your poison, as we got burned repeatedly on dribble drives.

On that last play, my guess is that Ace was just following the game plan, staying outside to prevent an open jumper, and without a timeout, there was no way for Pike to switch up the defense there.

I cannot fault Ace for NOT doubling the post there, as his man would’ve been left wide open for a kickout.

The logical reason is they are mature and we are not.

Princeton had a TO and didn’t call it.
Wonder if they didn’t want to give us a chance to set up the defense and discuss doubling or help.

Given Pierce probably could have scored on a number of our guys, but that was just too easy for him. Dercack was backed down like he was a child. In general, his defense has been atrocious this season. Blow-bys, lazy closeouts, etc. How in the world he won his conference defense player of the year is beyond me. He was supposed to be a defensive strength for us.

Agree 100%

Hate to be negative on him because he came here and seems like a good kid. He’s going to be a developmental player in the nba for his first couple seasons. Could he breakout from there, sure, maybe. He’s the perfect example of a guy that needs to be at a top flight program where he can play with no pressure due to the talent around him and develop at his own pace. We need him to do way too much due to the terrible roster.

Given all the hype leading up to this season it must go down in the annals of RU sports as one of the most disappointing. And we are not even into the B10 schedule yet. Oh, the despair. RU must get it right when hiring the next AD. Must get it right.

A good coach could help him out here and develop him rather quick. I will give Pike some credit here that when Ace was interviewed a few games ago he talked all about rebounding. Clearly Pike trying to get him focused there but I see so many other fundamental issues that need work and question what this staff is actually doing with him. I wonder if he is just getting star treatment and to me that is a disservice to him

If a person came on this board and didn't know the score, they would assume we lost by 20 and not a last second shot. The board also talks about last year's game the same way.
last year Zack martini absolutely toasted our best player — Cliff omoruyi

This year — #1 on Princeton similarly toasted our entire team — including Zack martini. 21 pts, 11 assists. Contributing on 43 pts.

It’s not that we’re losing… it’s the way we’re losing. It’s gross.

I mean it was a one point game.

Just like the Bama and A&M losses - context matters.

If those games were lauded because they were close losses but to elite teams then close losses (and wins - SHU) to bad teams should equally be criticized.

It goes both ways.

This is of course assuming SHU and Princeton aren't peer teams this year and we should be better than them.
It's seemimg that assumption may not be totally accurate.

Similarly if you came on the board after Bama and A&M you would assume we won.

It's not hard to understand context matters beyond the score
