Just looked up Yogi Berra's stats on baseball reference.com. This one jumped out: In 1950 he had 656 plate appearances and struck out only 12 times. Wow! What a great career he had. R.I.P.

He struck out a total of only 414 times in his nineteen year career (22 per season avg.). Both Mike Trout and Bryce Harper have already struck out more times in their respective four year careers.

Great stat on Yogi. The great Stan Musial only struck out over 40 times once in over 20 years. 41 times once. Those guys in that era were hitters. These guys today are swingers.

Hit a lot of pitches that were out of strike zone. Best clutch hitter ever

On ESPN yesterday they said this season a MLB player had more K's in a 4 game series than Yogi did that entire year.

I bet even with inflation he makes more than Yogi ever did.

That era there you needed to make contact . They played a lot of hit and run , and hit behind the runner. You saw much more contact as compared to today's game which is a swing for the fences era

Here is another stat that will never be broken: Yogi Berra caught both games in a double header 117 times.

Yogi is my dad's favorite player from childhood. Said he was almost impossible to pitch to because he was such a great "bad pitch" hitter. You pitch him really low or outside of the zone and he'd still kill you. Also said while short of stature, Yogi was a tremendous athlete. To me the strikeout numbers are amazing as are catching the back to backs but nothing trumps this: the man played on 14 pennant winning teams and won the Series 10 times. That's double Jete's championship total which is already impressive in it's own right. I personally believe he should be included right up there with Yankee immortals Ruth, DiMaggio, Gehrig and Mantle.
