Taking a step back and looking at the overall bowl outlook after what was a missed opportunity but still an expected loss…

The teams RU is in competition for better bowls (MD, Minn, Wisc, and Neb) ALL lost yesterday, and there are several games between those teams left.

If RU can beat Iowa and MD, Iowa is likely to still win the West and take the Citrus Bowl spot. However, when the Las Vegas and Music City are picking RU is likely to be 8-4 competing with a bunch of 7-5 teams for selection.

Will be interesting to see how all this sets up.

Rutgers needs to beat Iowa next week.

Looking at Maryland’s schedule - if they don’t beat Nebraska next it is entirely possible they’re game against us will be for bowl eligibility (they have UM after). That raises the stakes incredibly high.

I think we need to bring back "Who to root for" threads from the bowl era...

There is a big pile up in the West and technically even one of IU/MSU could make a bowl, UMD at 5 wins. What is best for RU?

We want Maryland to beat Nebraska this weekend. Our best bet for a higher tier bowl is if Nebraska doesn't achieve eligibility and we beat Maryland head to head. Obviously, the RU-Iowa game is huge as it would give us a win over a team with a very good record.

Assuming Michigan is allowed to bowl this year, it seems safe to project PSU, OSU, and Michigan to the playoffs / NY6 bowls.

Next set of teams looking for slots:

Iowa (7-2, 4-2) - still face Rutgers, Illinois, at Nebraska
Rutgers (6-3, 3-3) - still face at Iowa, at PSU, Maryland

Four teams are 5-4 overall. In alphabetical order,

Maryland (5-4, 2-4) - still face at Nebraska, Michigan, at Rutgers
Minnesota (5-4, 3-3) - still face at Purdue, at Ohio State, Wisconsin
Nebraska (5-4, 3-3) - still face Maryland, at Wisconsin, Iowa
Wisconsin (5-4, 3-3) - still face Northwestern, Nebraska, at Minnesota

Two teams are 4-5:
Illinois (4-5, 2-4) - still face Indiana, at Iowa, Northwestern
Northwestern (4-5, 2-4) - still face at Wisconsin, Purdue, at Illinois

I'm not bothering with the 3-6 teams Indiana and Michigan State. Neither is a threat to leapfrog us in any pecking order unless we lose out, in which case I think we're probably going to the Pinstripe.

Next bowls looking for teams:

Citrus - probably take the West champ IMO, especially if it is Iowa at 9-3 or better. Even 8-4 might be enough.
Music City
Las Vegas
Pinstripe

Easy rooting interest this week: Purdue over Minnesota, Indiana over Illinois, Rutgers over Iowa. I say NW over Wisconsin. I don't see the Wildcats as the same competition as the Badgers for the Music City or Vegas, I don't think they travel as much.

At least one of Nebraska or Wisconsin is getting to six wins minimum with the chance of more. We need to stay ahead of one of them (or two of those schools plus Iowa) to get better than Pinstripe.

Plum - I think Pinstripe will take RU at 6-6 over any of the other options. Nobody else available will be any better than 7-5 and they will likely believe Rutgers would sell the most tickets. Now if a scenario arises where the Pinstripe is choosing between Rutgers and Nebraska, I wouldn't be completely shocked if they decided to take that traveling fanbase and save RU for another year. At this point, we just need to try to win more games to put us in the best possible position.

That Nebraska pick would be the dream scenario for RU at 6-6 or probably even 7-5, because picking after the Pinstripe is a much better bowl, the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix against a B12 opponent.

does pinstripe pick last amongt all the bowls listed? (meaning if RU still around when it gets to pinstripe wouldnt they need to take them or else RU has nowhere else?)
edit- oh see someone else posted Phoenix bowl would pick after.

Picking order:

Citrus (Orlando)
Music City (Nashville)
Las Vegas
Pinstripe (NY)
Guaranteed Rate (Phoenix)
Quick Lane (Detroit)

Detroit Free Press projections today:
Citrus - Iowa (they were here two years ago)
Music City - Wisconsin (had Iowa last year, so they cannot be selected this year)
Las Vegas - Nebraska (was Wisconsin two years ago when this was last a B1G bowl - I'm not sure if they are allowed to be picked again under the "no repeat" rules)
Pinstripe - Rutgers
Guaranteed Rate - Minnesota
Quick Lane - Maryland

Like I said - we need to pass one of those three Western teams to climb the bowl selection ranking.

I agree with you that we need to pass one of the western teams, but we shouldn't have to. Clearly the East is the better product.

Pinstripe picks #6 of 8 of the Big Ten bowl affiliations.

Too bad having a Bowl that no Team or traveling fanbase wants to go to can’t be last in the selection order.

The payout from the Pinstripe bowl is decent, so they were able to buy their way to that #6 spot.
Really, it's better than Detroit (probably) for most of the other B1G teams. Only edge for Detroit would be indoor football stadium > outdoor baseball stadium. If the Jets had built a domed stadium in NYC, that would be a great destination for non-Rutgers teams IMO.

Two ways to look at it- For a visiting team- NYC during the Holiday is a heck of a fun trip. Only problem is cost and availability. But for some- the chance to have a trip of a lifetime and being sitting in Yankee stadium. Not a bad thing at all.

For us- it just sucks but better than nothing

Simple answer this season is to beat Iowa and Maryland and convince Music City or Las Vegas they should take us this year. We should have pent up travel demand after the bowl drought. The backdoor Gator Bowl on short notice doesn't count for most of the fanbase. Really, if we are 6-6 we have no business hoping for better in the pecking order, and if we are 7-5 it would be highly debatable at best.

I’m probably in the minority here but I have been to both Bowl games and would pick the Detroit bowl vs. the Pinstripe Bowl. Real football stadium/ indoors in late December; much more to do within walking distance in the area:Restaurants, Casinos, Brewery, etc. A real Bowl experience.
There’s a reason why a team can’t be forced to play in the Pinstripe Bowl more than once every 7 years.

Agree. If you are from the Midwest, NYC at the holidays does hold some attraction as a destination. For us, living here and being able to get into the City anytime we want, it does not seem as desirable. Still I will take a Pinstripe bowl any day over a trip t Detroit.

The Pinstripe is better than the Quick Lane because of the dome, Detroit and MAC opponent.

The bowl lower in the picking order than the Pinstripe that is better for the team/fans is the Guaranteed Rate (Phoenix, B12 opponent).

What… Dome in late December in a real football stadium is an advantage for Detroit not pinstripe.

When I think of detroit I am reminded of the Kentucky fried movie where in lieu of torture the victim was taken to detriot as a worse punishment.

PS- pays more.
PS- is at a legendory field(ok, not orinigal but you get it as a local"
PS- is a bowl destination at one of the greatest cities to ever visit in the holidays

Detroit- sucks as a place and city. Only City in America I just go out of my way not to book a business trip in. But, players want to be on a plane, players want out of everyday life on campus, players want an experience. The PS Bowl is like every other away game.
For the game- let's be honest- sightlines- seriously- did they keep you at gunpoint at the cheap seats you purchase at YS? We were in a dome in so many other bowls- WTF does that matter?
I don't want either and happy as F tat we are talking this but really...

Total BS Post unless you have been to both Bowls
Pinstripe as a bowl sucks…. Last desirable place for players, staff, and fans.
Obviously you have not been there if you rate the South Bronx better.

That would have been a premier bowl in a great location. Can you imagine the number of major events that would have had? It would likely have been one of the NY6 bowls, final fours, super bowls ect.

The payouts don't matter. The Big 10 pools and then shares the bowl revenues equally among all schools.
My post was only one line and you couldn’t even read to the end of it?

It has nothing to do with what the schools get. The point is that the higher payout to the B1G meant the B1G placed them higher in the bowl selection order than a bowl played in a baseball stadium in a northern city would normally be.

They would be last or next to last in the order if their payout wasn’t a factor.

Well- I said the Pinstripe bowl sucks for our team. And for a lot of people around the country- a chance to visit NYC and Yankee Stadium is actually kind of cool.

Detroit vs NYC- not even close. And if you are coming in as a visiting fan- I don't believe you are booking your Hotel in The South Bronx.

Not going to worry about it or build my hopes up. As long as we get a win in any of the 4 games to finish 7-6 (or better).

6-7 would be a bummer.

Wound welcome a crappy team in the PS as long as it’s a win.

And for your return trip from Detroit you go through probably the worst Homeland Security in the country. Have fun with your belt off holding your jeans up while they do a pat down in public.

But you state the dichotomy well. Detroit may be better from the team's point of view but the PS (despite the stadium configuration) is better for the fans.

You paying $100+ for a ticket and you just blush over the fact that the stadium configuration is absolutely terrible. There isn't a good seat in the house. Isn't the point of going to the game is watching the game live up close??

I went to the last QuickLane bowl and thought it was perfectly fine. Good drive out to Detroit, the pregame partying was solid, the stadium is pretty decent. I'd go back.

Third base side, the seats are good enough.
