OT - Official Star Wars E8/The Last Jedi Thread

For me it was as good as any of the original 4, 5, 6 and I'd probably put it on par with Empire Strikes Back which is my favorite.

Hopefully Last Jedi is closer to Rogue One than Force Awakens. IMAX on Sunday at AMC Loews, so we'll see.
My wife hated it, I loved it. She said it was too dark and everyone died. I said to her do you remember A New Hope? In the 1st scene Vader chokes a guy to death, friggin Luke watches his dead aunt and uncle burn, Jawas slaughtered, Ben Kenobi cuts off a guys arm and you see it fall to the floor. She said yea, but everyone lives in the end and it has a happy ending. Sometimes you just can't win.

Just got back from the showing.

Great reboot of the series. All of the first generation of characters have gone stage left, handing off the rebellion to new blood.

Lots of girl power: bring your daughters

Lots of omages to Empire Strikes Back

Long movie: 2.5 hours long.

Visually stunning movie.

Please tell me they didn't off the coolest dude in the galaxy. Lando Calrissian, the only dude who could pull off wearing a cape.

I remember going to a late showing of E7 on opening night, perhaps 9pm'ish and seeing so many fathers and daughters. It was a "typical" SW crowd, at least, until that movie. My daughter is too young, but I look forward to when she is ready to join in on the SW fun!

My 7 yr old daughter was bemoaning having to go to a boys movie with her older brother. She was clapping at the end.

Just saw it. Great as usual. Not my favorite but that’s not saying much. Love them all. Great job again with this reboot trilogy.

I was more excited about going and sharing #7 with my boys than the actual movie....brought me back to the Summer of ‘77 when the Star Destroyer filled the whole screen.

And it was even better doing it with “Rogue One”

I am still waiting for the episode where the Imperial Accountants do a cost benefit analysis on the building of Death Stars along with an audit of the building sub contracts. This would be the most interesting and exciting Star Wars of all time.
Death Star construction is incurring cost overruns and somebody needs to be sent to the emperor for the change order.

A little OT, but seeing E8 in North Brunswick today. Anyone have suggestions on somewhere to eat around the Regal Commerce?

TIA

Did the same thing yesterday. Wound up at Greene Turtle and I regret it today. Go to Moe’s. Rutgers sponsor too!

Was looking for more of a sit down place with drinks. Tried a quick search of places around there on Rt 1 and didn’t see much.

Great movie, lots of stuff happened, on pace for $215m opening weekend. Only second to E7.

Most interesting thing is that E9 (final movie of the trilogy) doesn't have a established storyline or mission yet. Normally after the end of the 2nd movie, you pretty much know what will come in the 3rd (in general). What needs to be resolved and have to happen. Not the case here.

Think they just announced another trilogy.

Just saw this last one yesterday. I may have missed the one before. We don't get stuff the same as everybody else down in NZ.

My favorite scene was where the giant kangaroos ran through the casino. Wasn't looking for that.

Also, good to see Mark Hamill get a big part. Now I realize why his career never took off after the original Star Wars. He seriously cannot act. But good to see him. Liked the girl a lot. Liked LeVar Burton.

Was Laura Dern always that goofy looking?

Good movie.

There are a few options in that immediate area. Buffalo Wild Wings, Longhorn and Bertucci's are all just north of the movie theater. A few miles North you have a Friday's (near WalMart) and a Chili's ( near Trader Joe's/ bed bath and beyond)

Appreciate it. Ended up going to Greene Turtle bc of lack of time. Took us 2 1/2 hours to get from West Orange to North Brunswick to meet friends. Was actually gonna try Top Golf but lack of time precluded.

How was Green Turtle? That's across the street from the theater, right?

Yes, I heard. Wonder if it will be with the same characters, or if it will jump way ahead in the future (i.e., brand new cast and characters).

No idea. But they have way too much invested not to continue the franchise.

Really? Spoiler alert: How about good battles evil. A rag-tag group of do-gooders will come together around a ridiculous plan that has little chance of success. Two main characters will see the good in each other, and to save each other, one of the pair will make the ultimate sacrifice. In the end good will prevail.

Overall I enjoyed the movie but it got wayyyy too silly at times. I really cringed at some of the humor. It was very jarring. I hated Kylo-Ren in the first movie but I thought he was badass in this one. Also Snoke was badass. There were some scenes that left me breathless. Suicide bombing by light speed, any scene with Snoke, Rey and Ren battling the imperial guard after killing Snoke, and Luke vs. Kylo-Ren were some of the coolest scenes I've ever seen in a Star Wars movie. And one "what the hell" moment: the scene with Leia floating back to the ship after being blown to hell. That was laughably bad.

I thought the movie was good but not great. I liked the different individual plots together, but I don't think the way they were melded together was great.

Liked it better than Force Awakens but not as good as Rogue One. Not as predictable/old hat as Force Awakens. Liked some of the unexpected things that happened some of which have been mentioned above.

I don't follow Star Wars closely but I'm not surprised that the storyline for the final episode isn't out yet. I kinda felt some of those unexpected things that happened and the theme of letting go the past was sort of freeing the series from some of the stuff in the old Star Wars movies. Kinda reminded me of the Star Trek reboot where the timeline/time travel in the first movie freed it from the stuff in the old series so they could explore in whatever direction they felt like somewhat unencumbered.

Liked it, didnt love it but it kept my interest. The comedy was a bit, excuse the pun, forced at times.
With Disney owning this your great grandchildren will be going to the opening of episode XXXVI. This last scene was a indicatoin that we really havent seen the last Jedi. Or was Disney just asking for a do over of Episode I ?

One question answered and one question asked.
1. Yes, laura Dern always has been that goofy looking.
2. Where the heck was Levar Burton?

I thought it was complete garbage, but my kid loved it. Of course he believes an elf is watching him and reporting his actions to a fat guy who lives in the North Pole.

Would love Disney/JJ to redo E1-3.

I didn't see Levar Burton either.

I thought the stable boy at the end could be a possible foreshadowing of a maybe a flash forward into the future in the next episode with the resistance having been rebuilt somewhat with people like the stable boy. I guess it could be sort of a "redo" of Episode 1 but that would be too much old hat like Force Awakens if it goes in that direction.

But like I said I do think it's open ended. There was a breaking away from the old convention and thinking. No more Jedi, no more Sith. Still good and evil and people who use the Force but not in the same exact line of thinking.

audience reviews on rotten tomatoes are far far lower than critics...93% for critics to 56% for audience....Disney and MSM trying to blame it on trolls

There are trolls in the movie? Isn't that a bit too much LOTR?

Actually thought it was well done. Sometimes you wind up looking for which story lines/tropes/themes they recycle from previous episodes, but they changed it up enough to make it interesting. Not 93% happy, but not so unhappy to bring it down to 56%. For such a long movie, it was well paced, but you really have to wonder about the leaps of faith/suspension of disbelief required. For example, most of the movie occurred within 24 hrs? I realize you can put the scenes with Luke on a different time scale, but the rest?

What's the main critique? Some of the humor was a little corny but I laughed and much of the audience seem to as well. Leia's space scene was a bit much, actually thought they might kill her off in this movie.

I mean it wasn't great but 56% seems kinda low. It didn't seem that bad, I would've expected maybe a 70s kinda number. Maybe the things I mentioned where it seems to breaking away a little from "traditional" Star Wars turned some off.

same old stuff, social justice messaging, too much humor, and time spent on things going nowhere with the plot

I think some of the fans wanted more tradition and they are getting something else

I didnt see it but just been reading some of the comments

My issues were that it seemed predictable and that it was simply a mash up of parts of Empire and Return. I may also be a little disappointed that i lost a bet with my daughter about who was going to be on the bad side at the end. (I said Rey). I think they could have done more with Luke as well, but it is very entertaining and I will be seeing it again this week.
