OT: 7.0 Earthquake hits just off the coast of Northern California (near Eureka); Tsunami warnings cancelled

Just happened about 40 minutes ago...Tsunami warnings were issued for parts of the Pacific Coast from SF to southern Oregon after the quake hit, but were just cancelled, with no significant tsunamis observed. Damage on land appears minor so far. Close call.

Rutgers Football HC Greg Schiano will speak with the media later today, but before that let’s send our guesses out there.

Who do your guys think will sign first today? Who are you most excited about?

Did Fran Brown Learn Anything From Schiano? 🤷‍♂️

Since mid June, Sewercuse has lost 6 commits between the 2025 & 2026 classes with half of them being 4* per the TOS composite.

At least one was academically at risk and two FL commits apparently never had serious intention of staying committed to Sewercuse when Fran took their verbal pledge.

Here are some interesting comments, one from the local rag and another from a poster on their boards.

"Williams wasn’t sure recruiting attention would ever come. He jumped at his first offer and committed to Louisville in November. He decommitted after Ole Miss offered in December. Syracuse followed with an offer, and Williams committed to the Orangemen in April.

He remains committed to Syracuse, but that’s not likely his landing place. He would like to stay in Florida. Last year he wasn’t sure he was going to get any offers from the Florida schools. He now has a scholarship offer from every Football Bowl Subdivision school in Florida, with the exception of FIU. He’s currently intrigued by Miami and Florida."

"Some interesting info for you on Demetrius. As I said before, I live in the same area of Florida as Demetrius. A friend who is a local high school coach asked Demetrius about committing to Cuse. Demetrius shrugged it off and said (paraphrase) “It’s early yet. I committed to see if it would increase interest. Kinda like dating a girl, other girls find you more desireable if you’re dating someone else”

Greg didn't entertain the academic at risk kid and would never take commits from players that are not all in. Did Fran learn anything while working for Greg?

Additionally, one has to wonder whether Fran's RU recruiting benefitted from having Greg as a closer. These are Chris Ash level 1st time head coach mistakes from a supposed recruiting prodigy.

And for our laugh of the day:

"We need to start acting like we've been there. If we keep acting like Rutger's fanbase, that's exactly what we're going to reap."

They can only dream of recruiting strong classes that are tight knit and not full of potential land mines.

Interesting numbers from Penn State

Today's Philadelphia Inquirer has a story about Penn State's desire to increase freshman enrollment at the main campus in Happy Valley from 9200 to 10,000 annually. As part of this, Penn State has contracted with a developer to build and manage housing for upperclass students on Penn State property.

The story says that the undergraduate acceptance rate at Happy Valley is 50% (compared with 79% in the entire system) and that the take rate (the percentage of admitted students who enroll) is 17.4% at Happy Valley compared to 15.6% in the system overall. I don't know how those numbers compare with our main campus in New Brunswick/Piscataway. The story also says that 58% of Penn State's students are Pennsylvania residents; the story doesn't specify whether these are numbers for just undergraduates, nor do I know what percentage might be students from abroad. Finally, the story mentions that Penn State is increasing its recruitment efforts in, among other places, Illinois, which it regards as potentially "the new New Jersey."

NJBracketology

Early December bracketology update with the NET release earlier this week and a good slate of games last night, including the first conference matchups in the Big Ten.

The way I see it, if Rutgers doesn't lose the game to Kennesaw State, they're looking at a seed somewhere in the 6-8 range given the close losses to Alabama and Texas A&M, especially with how strong the SEC has looked so far (9-1 against the ACC yesterday). That loss knocked them down all the way to a play-in game at Dayton for now. Rutgers needs to go at least 4-1 in December to maintain their position in the field, but they must avoid losing to Seton Hall, Princeton, and Columbia in those games. Big opportunity for a Quad 1 win at Ohio State this weekend!

My "Mea Culpa"

As many of you know - personally or otherwise - my pop is the main reason for my Rutgers Athletics fanaticism. Essentially from the day I was born. Dad graduated in '59 and has been a season ticket holder for both football and basketball as long as I can remember. From Section 104 Row JJ at the OLD, wooden-plank-splinter-laden bleachers of the original stadium and behind-the-basket 2nd level seats at The Barn, I never had a choice. And I was 100000% okay with that at the time because, well, in my 10th year of life hoops went undefeated then, the following autumn, football went undefeated!! I was "IN" and there was no stopping me!! Little did I know what......

....okay everyone pretty much knows what occurred as a department, in football and hoops. over the next couple/few decades, I don't need to get into that now it'll be saved for my memoirs which, eventually, I'll continue work on again one of these nights lol!

Earlier this year, just before the season began, I got a call from my pop - in a car with his PCP - letting me know he was on the way to the hospital to get checked in so that could "run some tests." Welp....my pop ended up missing the 1st 3 home games of the season (made 3 of the last 4) - despite being out of the hospital before the regular season began - the first home games I can remember him missing, purposely, in my lifetime. Now....I'm gonna cut this short again....but that REALLY got to me. Really, really got to me....again, there's so much more to this/these stories, but not for now....I just need to apologize (but remember one thing: I made 100% CERTAIN that my dad got included in the B1G RU-Louisville special along with me. That's what this "bond" means to me....). Anyway....

....Last Saturday, with my dad well on the way to his 87th birthday (yesterday), when i went to visit my pop both pre-game then again at halftime, I lost it. I lost it big time. Knowing he was soon to have a kidney removed, and coming off 4-day trip to the hospital and enough tests to get any child beyond nervous, I started to think to myself "what if this is his last game in attendance....." - shit, it's getting to me again right now - and I couldn't get it out of my head the ENTIRE 2nd half. While I'm sure the drinks/shots pre-game didn't help - duh - and being an emotional **** to begin with (I'm Greek, from NJ and my sign is "cancer" lol....), I still was able to concentrate on the game and, as has been my place since we got our group's season tickets in 121 Rows 11 and 12 back in 2001(?), I was standing one leg on the railing in front of me, the other on the bleacher, leading 121 all the way through the game-winning drive. Or so I thought.

I just couldn't get it out of my head walking out of the stadium, to the busses, back to College Ave, walking to meet my buddy so we could stop at Evelyn's, waiting for my dad's post-game call (EVERY football/hoops game since the day I can remember), the call and then the train trip back to Newark and JC.

Stupidly.....I couldn't stop posting. Usually I'm pretty good with NOT posting on game day or after games, SPECIFICALLY DUE TO THE EMOTIONS OF BEING A FAN(atic) but sometimes I will (admittedly A LOT more lately than in the past....) and the emotion of the ENTIRE day for me, and how that game went down - while thinking about my pop and the future - got the best of me. The thread about Greg and then the MSU thread - we don't need to get into them again - were both "over-the-top" and I knew it the second I his "post thread" for each one. I easily couldn't asked Richie to delete the threads, but that wouldn't have been cool IMHO, so I let them ride....AND "ride" they did lol!!

Guys.....MEA CULPA....but can I need to stop eating crow now??? I have had crow apps, crow dinner, multiple crow desserts and now crow breakfast. I'm all "crowed" out guys lol!!!

Luv you'ze all (refuse to say "ya'll" until we get to Nashville....)!!!

NUTS

*** please ignore spelling and grammatical errors at this moment, as I don't feel like checking myself, as well as the brevity of the pop/son story (for now.....)!!!

Gap Between B1G/SEC and Everyone Else Widening

Rutgers’ class is anywhere between the 9th or 10th highest-rated in the B1G.

This year’s class would rank:

5th in the ACC (with 3 “blueblood” programs in Clemson, FSU and Miami ranked higher)

2nd in the B12 (behind only TCU (yes, I’m aware that Colorado doesn’t recruit many HS kids))

And would be 1st, head and shoulders above any P12/MW teams.
