OT: MLB in Memoriam 2022

MLB.com has put together a nice piece on baseball people who passed away this past year. I realize that we talked about many of them when it happened but you'll see some here that weren't. It's a nice walk down memory lane especially for some of the older fans on this board like me.
One that I had missed was Bill Haller, the umpire who was part of that great argument with Earl Weaver. Links below to the MLB article/video and the Haller/Weaver "discussion".

A True Christmas Carol about A Rutgers Student from Long Ago

Rutgers College student Stephen Fiske was expelled from the school around 1860 for writing inappropriate things about the faculty. But he landed a job with the New York Herald and wound up with an exciting career. He held no grudges against his former school. In fact, he still proudly represented Rutgers. He was with Abraham Lincoln on the train that pulled into the George Street station on its way to the Presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C. in 1861. The cheers that accompanied the arrival of the train were for not for the President-elect but from the Rutgers friends of Stephen Fiske! Fiske later recalled Lincoln playfully telling him, "Is this your reception or mine?”

According to the August 27, 1909 Daily Home News, Stephen Fiske was living in New York City and, “…while he does not often favor New Brunswick with a visit, he never misses an opportunity to say a good word for the town of his birth, the people and its institutions, particularly Rutgers College. His brothers, Haley Fiske and William H. Fiske, and his nephew, Rev. Charles Fiske, all had a taste of journalism either with the New Brunswick Times or the New Brunswick Home News. The December 2, 1910 Daily Home News also reported he wrote to the Rutgers Targum, “…In response to your paragraph in reference to newspaper reports of Rutgers athletics, I have interviewed the Hon. Melville Stone, secretary and general manager of the Associated Press, and he says that he will order the Rutgers football and baseball games with other colleges to be duly noticed. The other Press Associations will follow this good example. But notices and tickets should be sent to them in advance.”

In addition to covering Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration train ride, the August 27, 1909 Daily Home News said Fiske accompanied the Prince of Wales, Edward VII, on his first American tour, covered General Giuseppe Garibaldi in his last campaign against Rome but spent much of his New York Herald career as a theatre and entertainment critic. He reminisced in the February 15, 1912 Daily Home News, “One morning in London, I received the following note: ‘Shipmate ahoy! How am I to entertain an American who neither eats, drinks, smokes, chews, nor swears? Please come at once. C. D.”

When he arrived, his “intimate friend” was already engaged in conversation with a third party, so Fiske was coached into playing a game of billiards with the son of the man – the son of Charles Dickens.

A Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Hot Take: Quarterback

I previously said that I think that if we went Langan at QB and just did the full Tebow offense, I think he would've been better than Wimsatt and Simon. The fact that Langan had a higher completion percentage and better QB rating with Nunzio than Wimsatt had this year is bad. Langan was a RS freshman too. He threw the same amount of passes but had more total touchdowns. A 44% completion percentage in todays day and age is absurd.

But this post isn't about Langan. Should we take a look at Rashad Rochelle at QB? Simon is meh and Wimsatt can't hit the broad side of a barn and doesn't run. When he does run, he runs like he's afraid to get hit. Art and Gio who were way less athletic than Wimsatt at least would try and get a first down. Rochelle is elusive. They put him at running back and he r ran well. He's definitely not a RB. There must be a reason why they didn't really throw to him. Either he has no hands or isn't good at run-ing routes yet.

Now before you say he can't throw, neither can Wimsatt. I feel that we'd be the school who would put Dennard Robinson at cornerback or something stupid like that. Half of the passes we throw are dink and dunks anyway. We don't need him to be an NFL QB. We need him to be a good college QB like Greg Ward. Look at his Hudl. He's rocketing passes down the field. His arm isn't weak at all. I don't get It. Illinois was recruiting him as a QB. I'd say at least let him try it. Gavin is NOT a dual threat QB.

Enough of the Schiano bashing.

Yes I know our offense has sucked for what seems like forever and we have yet to fill the OC position. And our record in the Big Ten leaves much to be desired. And our recruiting class this year is rated lower than last year's but you never know how classes pan out until several years down the road. I get all the criticism. But so many have lost all perspective in this Greg's third year at the helm. I get it that some previously doormat programs like Kansas and Illinois have turned the corner and Maryland has recruited well and won some big games. But many forget the shape of the program left by Ash . We were awful , our recruiting of OL and DL was pathetic , and our W/L record reflected the state of the program. But we have made progress , especially on defense which is more than competitive and probably very good if they had any help from the offense as far as time of possession , turnovers , and failure to score. But you don't turn around a Power 5 football program overnight. And three years is not enough time when you're competing in the Big Ten against powers like OSU, Michigan , Penn State , two of which are in the College Playoffs this year. Moreover it's not like these programs are standing pat while Schiano upgrades the program. If Schiano can get a creative OC, GW continues to improve along with our OL , and most of all we get some receivers who can create separation , we're not that far off from being more than respectable , if not good. And recruiting will improve--Schiano is still a fine closer but he can't close if his assistants aren't bringing him quality recruits like we saw when Fran Brown was here. There is a reason why football icons like Belichick and Urban Meyer have so much respect for Schiano and the players he produces. Enough of the Schiano bashing.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

After spending another Christmas Eve with my wife’s side of the family I am reminded of many things. Much like last night we fight, like to talk smack, get a little drunk but still do care about each other. Just like all my Scarlet Brothers and Sisters. Many of us have lost loved ones this year. May you be comforted in knowing they are no longer in pain.

I hope you all find peace, love and joy of the holiday season. May you be surrounded by family and friends ( and this crazy board).🎅

Merry Christmas

So he paused. And the Grinch put his hand to his ear.
And he did hear a sound rising over the snow.
It started in low. Then it started to grow.
But the sound wasn't sad! Why, this sound sounded merry!
It couldn't be so! But it WAS merry! VERY!
He stared down at Whoville! The Grinch popped his eyes!
Then he shook! What he saw was a shocking surprise!
Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small,
Was singing! Without any presents at all!
He HADN'T stopped Christmas from coming! IT CAME!
Somehow or other, it came just the same!
And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling: "How could it be so?"
"It came with out ribbons! It came without tags!"
"It came without packages, boxes or bags!"
And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before!
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store."
"Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!”…

Dr. Suess

Wishing all a very Merry Christmas

OT: No Two Shuffles Alike.... No Two Snowflakes Alike?

Considering the sheer number of snowflakes that fall & have fallen worldwide since time immemorial, I don't think this premise is correct.

Similar to the statement that shuffling a deck of cards will produce an almost infinite # of arrangements. I believe there is a number of finite arrangements to the 52 card deck, though the number is immense:
8×10^67 (8 with 67 '0's after it), essentially meaning that a randomly shuffled deck has never been seen before and will never be seen again.

But like a true Rutgers fan, I believe there is a CHANCE!

Happy Holidays!
