Not only did we beat Michigan that 1st year in the B1G,and finished at 3-5 in the B1G, and 8-5 overall, but we continued a trend at the time of having an amazing record against the betting lines. I know, who cares right? But it showed that for several years Rutgers always outperformed what Vegas thought of our program.I'm pretty sure one year we started a season 10-0 against the spread. Now, as a program,we seem to have fallen on such hard times that the only way the "pros' would put their money on Rutgers is to sit back till the end of the week and wait for the line to climb.A few short years ago, it was the opposite. I believe Ash will get it done, but man, I can't believe how 2 below average recruiting classes can curtail everything Schiano had built. When he said it will be built on solid ground with no shortcuts, I didn't think it could crumble so fast. There's no such thing as solid ground in college football.Your only one bad recruiting class away, or a couple of key injuries away from a total disaster.

It's hard to say how much of an effect the change in conferences had, but it's had some impact. Harbaugh's return to Michigan put them in the top 10, so we have 2 in our division to play every year. Our crossover games the last 2 years were Nebraska and Wisconsin.

If we were in the AAC East, (assuming us in there meant Cincinnati in the west), we'd have annual games with Temple, ECU, UConn, USF and UCF. That's hardly murderer's row, though Temple had a solid team last year. We would have gone 3-2 against the division, and even if we drew 2 of UL, UC and Memphis, we would have played Tulane OR Navy OR SMU (I doubt Tulsa would have been invited if RU and UL stayed). So figure 1-2 there for 4-4 in conference last year.

It would mask bad recruiting but we'd probably be at or close to 500.

It's more than just the couple of bad recruiting classes....all the players that either didn't make it on campus, failed out or had to leave the team for other reasons have devastated any depth that we had.
