Curious if anybody has any thoughts on the current HS wrestling season in NJ. Tournaments. Surprise freshmen. Upsets. Questions. Etc.

I'll start with ...

1.) I don't recognize any HWT names on the top guys lists. Recognize a ton of 220s. Are there any standouts at HWT this year?

2.) Pat Glory has been an absolute beast so far this year (destroyed kids at BotE).

3.) Here's NJ.com's first P4P list: https://highschoolsports.nj.com/new...estler-rankings-of-2018-the-best-of-the-best/

I believe Acciardi and Delvecchio at 220 are the best "Heavies" as far as college potential, although it has been reported that Delvecchio likes football more, but who knows.

I read the P4P list and, although there is always room for grumbling, I had a major issue with them excluding O'Malley at 170 but they have Kanniard at #9. O'Malley is a Drexel commit and nationally ranked. Last year, O'Malley had 4 losses all to Griffith of BC(a Stanford commit). Most significantly, O'Malley teched Kanniard in the NJ State 3rd place bout 15-0. I remember watching that match and hoped Rutgers would get O'Malley as he was absolutely dominant. I understand kids can improve, and Kanniard looks to be a good one, but this omission was a little out there to me.

The 3rd ranked 285 , Joe Andes, is from the HS I went to.... I know he was a terrific lineman in football, not sure if he is D1, let alone Big10 caliber for wrestling, I kind of doubt it. He doesn't wrestle in any of the big open tournaments as far as I know. I'll try to find out more.

The highest ranked uncommitted 285 senior in the tri state region is Deonte Wilson, from Amityville, L.I.
Maybe RU is looking into him.

Flo will be streaming the Doc Buchanan, Ca tourney, Bergen Catholic and some Western powers will be there.
Then the biggie.... Who's #1 will be at Bergen Catholic on Jan 13. I think besides Bergen C, there will be Blair, Bethlehem Catholic and Wyoming Seminary there.....4 of the top 10 teams in the country. I will be there, hopefully.

As far as the NJ P4P list, it's great to see RU commit Billy Janzer , Delsea HS, 182 pounds high on that list. Hopefully Nick Gravina's replacement when Nick is finally done.

Also, Goodale was at a tournament recently (Colt Classic) to see Kanniard (#9 P4P)

I think O Malley was beat twice by Foca (Iowa St)

I always wonder about the Michael Petite types at the next level. He wrestlers for Piscataway. He is a senior... region champ as a freshman, 7th and 4th in AC as soph. Junior. Sounds like a good recruit, right?

Except he wrestles 160 in HS (I think?) but is like 5'3 (point is he is the ultra short, ultra thick type).

Any idea how those guys translate to the next level? I think a local kid who won't require a ton of money can add good depth to the room. I want us to get to Michigan/Lehigh level and state placers/champs on the bench is the key, no?

(Piscataway High is 10 minutes from the RAC. They used ot evacuate us to the RAC during bomb scares)

Kanniard will continue to jump levels.Probably has a better chance at winning at 152 but he is probably to big.He will make a run at the title with Griffith more than likely beating him.

If he is at 160 now and 170 next year then he is a 165 pounder in college or maybe a174.

Petite will need to be at 149 in college but he has wrestled at 160 all four years thus far.

New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association Top 20 statewide rankings

The six-time defending Non-Public A champion Bergen Catholic High School wrestling team, featuring six nationally ranked grapplers, is the consensus No. 1 pick in the New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association’s initial Top 20 statewide poll for the 2017-18 season.

Bergen Catholic, which InterMat ranks fourth in the country, opened the year with a second-place finish at the Beast of the East, where sophomore Nick Kayal won an individual title.

In one of the rankings, Quinn Kinner has moved up to #1 in the country at 138 (he goes to my HS, which is why I write about him more).

8 N.J. wrestlers among elite in national rankings, 5 N.J. teams are ranked

New Jersey wrestlers are making their mark on the national scene. Two N.J. wrestlers are ranked No. 1 nationally in their respective weight classes. Three are ranked No. 2 and three others are rated between No. 3 and No. 5 in either the Intermat or Flowrestling rankings. Five Jersey boys are ranked nationally at 106 pounds, one of the strongest weight classes in the state. At the team level, five N.J. teams are ranked nationally.
