2018 Valdir Manuel Committing Soon

We have at least two maybe more. This roster will be turned over.

Notice I said we don't have any openings "right now." I know there's a good possibility -- even a likelihood -- that one or more roster spots open up, but that wouldn't be until after the season. So I'm just wondering how a recruit could verbal to us without even knowing there's a roster spot available.

I suppose it's possible Pike or the potential departures have already discussed the departures, in which case openings DO exist right now.

If this was the early signing period, you’d be able to over sign by one. As for verbally committing with no spots open, it’s been done at other schools before. The coach obviously has to communicate with player. “Hey, son, just want to let you know there will be a spot for you.” The coaches know a spot will open up.

Bullock is a D1 player, maybe not a Big 10 player, but definitely D1. Mensah might struggle in the NJAC.
Refresh our memories. What were the other D1 offers Bullock had when he signed in the Spring of his Senior year of high school?

"Saint Peter's, Wagner, Robert Morris, Fairleigh Dickinson, Davidson, La Salle, San Francisco, Monmouth, Rider and Binghamton were all involved in his recruitment, but Rutgers was his biggest offer."

Being d1 seemingly means more than just being good at basketball. Bullock could over power kids in ha because a lot of teams tallest player is 6 4, but he has obviously not been responsible enough to showcase him as a d1 player. That hstape is definitely fun to watch. It’s the big leagues now though.

If you were a low level D-1 program would you tie up one of your scholarships for a year on the Bullock kid ?

Was Bullock a Pikiell recruit. If so how did he miss so bad?
There’s a lot that goes into recruiting. This doesn’t really fall on Pike. How did he know Matt was going to show up out of shape? This was late in the year and we needed bodies. Matt was also all state. He wasn’t some scrub. He’d probably be able to compete at this level if he was in shape

Sorry but IMO this falls on Pike. He took a chance with a kid from a HS program that provided him with Warney at SBU. I think this was a relationship move hoping it would lead to better players in the years to come. So far that has not materialized and Bullock on his own does not seem to merit a scholarship at this level.

The article also says that Bullock was originally recruited by Jordan and Pike didn't renege on that offer. I don't think he's as bad as everyone is making him out to be...give him a chance. He appears to be a pretty good shooter, especially compared to everyone else on the team.

"He remained mum on his recruitment throughout the season and said he rather focus on the season. But when asked about Rutgers, which offered him back while Eddie Jordan was the coach, he spoke highly of the possibility of playing for the Scarlet Knights."

Agreed. I blame Pike for Souf, but not for Bullock. Not only did RU need bodies when Pike was hired, but Bullock comes from a top NJ high school program, Roselle Catholic. So making that connection was worth a shot with a tweener kid who was an all-state performer. Souf, on the other hand, had below average JUCO numbers, looked mediocre at best on tape against bad competition, and as a JUCO guard was a dime a dozen. Nothing can explain why we wasted a scholarship on him. In fact, we played some low-major, non-conference games against teams that had much better JUCO guards than Souf.

Right now it looks like we can use Bullock with Eugene out
Bullock was our 4th best scorer vs Illinois
Tied
BULLOCK 8pts in 12 minutes 1 REB 1 Steal
Thiam.......8pts in 34 minutes 1REB 1 Asst

I think it was the panic around potentially losing Sanders. I would have thought there would have been a myriad of better options, however. I agree, it's a real head-scratcher.

I had always been under the impression (no inside info) that Pike took Bullock in order to increase the chances of landing Naz Reid (and also to solidify his relationship with Roselle Catholic, where Jameel Warney went). If so, it was definitely worth the risk. Plus there was no way anybody knew Bullock would balloon up to 260 pounds.

Because he was looking for bodies..one of those bodies was Eugene, a kid who went on to become a solid starter. Yet everyone seems to harp on Bullock, like the expectation is that everyone will be a good pickup in year 1 and 2 of the massive rebuild. That's a ridiculous expectation. Were kids beating down the door to come here when pikiell first signed on?

I agree with the post regarding Naz Reid.

I don't agree that because EJ offered him he had to.

I would be interested to know if he offered him at Stony Brook.

If he didn't why would he think he could play at Rutgers ?

Everything considered Pikiell did a pretty good job after being hired in late March. He got Bullock, got Thiam to stick with us, got Eugene, Sa and Gettys all just before the school year started. Almost every very good recruit had committed the previous November and most other schools were recruiting kids for a year or two. Coach did the very best he could in filling out the roster which was almost completely left bare when Eddie was let go. Many people were bashing RU yet Coach stayed very positive. He and his staff work non stop. I really hope that we can see some very good results in the not too distant future. People that criticize have no idea how much a build this program was and still is.

Round is a shape.

FWIW, I've heard the same thing.

Its pretty obvious the kid can play basketball. As someone said, he scored 8 pts in limited minutes. Garbage time or not, there were 4 others guys out there with him who were NOT scoring while he was.

He's not doing us or himself any favors by over eating. But he can clearly play basketball and help this team. Would I rather have him be 6-9? Sure. But I rarely get what I want.

The only offer Matt received was from RU. He is a great kid and a warrior but he is NOT a high D1 recruit. He did receive an offer from Syracuse for football.

Lots of guys can clearly do things

Its that but........ that many times keeps them from doing it.

In todays world the college athlete has a Strength and Conditioning Coach and every Athletic Program has a Nutritionist.

He's been in the program for almost 2 years now-----he knows what the issue is-----he hasn't addressed it.

Forget basketball------weight is an issue that will plague him for life and he needs to deal with it.

Posterizing overmatched mathletes on You Tube is different from competing at a high level in a major conference night in and night out.

The kid can help us if he gets in shape. He is a pretty good player. As far as not expecting he would blow up to 260 lbs. Just seeing him on the court in high school you could see he might gain weight.

Still not sure about the level of interest in Manuel from both sides (RU's side and players side)....he has had an offer for a while and been to a few RU games. Obviously for a lot of schools, transfers out have to occur in order to have Manuel verbal somewhere.
