28 yr old OC....?

What else would you expect? One usually hires people he is familiar with, trusts and can do a good job. Not too concerned about youth here as he seems to have very good experience and a good head coach will know how to balance and manage a staff.

Not all offensive schemes and ideas always come from the OC. The other staff members on both sides of the ball should be chipping in. Defensive people should be pointing out how they would defend a formation etc. In the same way an OC will be saying how he would attack a defense. This is what staff synergy is all about. And a head coach has to be flexible and strong enough to blend what comes out of staff meetings. Sometimes I would wonder if KF did this or had people talking with each other.

New OC is from university of Houston and currently the WR coach kicker is he is 28

It is a interesting hire...lots of ties to Ohio state in this initial staff
I'd like to see a little more experience. It's funny how easy it is to anoint people without much experience as geniouses while people with experience are all 'tainted'. Reality always gets in the way of expectations...

He's worked under Urban Meyer and Tom Herman. He left Ohio State with another former OSU coach, Everett Withers. He has the approval of one of the best offensive geniuses that ever coached at Ohio State, Tom Herman. Enough said. I would trade Drew for Tim Beck in a heartbeat! Darn it!

This will leave a lot of money available for a name hire for recruiting.
This will leave plenty of money in the budget for this young, newly wealthy staff to get hookers and blow.

Age not an issue. Think Bill Gates at 28. Think Steve Jobs at 28. Please!
Congratulations. You've just elevated our coaching staff to the outlier status of a Gates or Jobs before they've coached a single game together. What're you gonna do next?

Suggested Answer: "I'm going to Disney World, Bob".

Please, there are OC's only a few years older than Meheringer now getting or being considered for FBS jobs. Scott Frost got the UCF job, Seth Littrell just got the North Texas job and it's only a matter of time before Lincoln Riley gets a head job. These guys were "young" OC's as well and are now becoming young head coaches. Enjoy the ride and stop worrying so much. We are going to have an interesting off season (on the positive side) for the first time in years. I myself can't wait for spring practice.

Obviously not my intent. Just saying that judging anyone's competency by their age is risky business.

Ties to ohio state works for me just fine.

Plus.........

Young and energetic

Good recruiter

Limited OC experience, but did produce.

I like it, like the way Ash has really gone in a new direction. Yes, lack of experience makes it a little risky, but I think all in all, recruiting, new offense, excitement in program, Ash is off to a good start, and can't wait to see how this progresses and kids and recruits hopefully buy in.

I agree w/you and I knew it wasn't your intent. That's why I gave you the perfect suggested response. [laughing]

He's my age. I feel so unaccomplished!
I'm here to help. Date me for one week. If you can actually make it through the whole week without breaking up with me or killing me, you'll have accomplished more in one week than Mehringer will accomplish in his whole life. :)

At 28 I wonder about Stain....would have preferred older. Perhaps someone on Statins!

The age doesn't bother me, I would have liked more than the 1 year of OC experience at JMU. That's my concern but I like that he's been around Herman for 6 years. I don't think it's an exact analogy to guys like Frost/Spavital/Lashlee/Littrelll who were/are young P5 OCs. All of them worked under an offensive HC in Helfrich, Sumlin, Malzahn, Fedora. I think that is a difference. As for Riley he went out to and worked as an OC at the mid major level for a few years and proved himself before the step up to P5 OC.

This is 1 year as JMU OC/1 year WR coach and now a jump to P5 OC, that's a big leap without the umbrella of an offensive HC or a little longer time spent as OC at a lower level. So I don't think you can make the same analogy with him to the others mentioned.

That being said I'm not down on the guy, I'm just even keel about him. I like him better than I did McDaniels when he got hired, Rossi, Brock, Flood etc..I was very concerned about them and doubtful of how much success they would have here. He's also seems like he could be one of those Texas offensive guys who usually do a good job of pumping out strong offenses. It's B12 country and they're good at that. So I think he's got a better chance of success here than some of our past coordinators. I think he'll be a good recruiter for us too. I also think it's possible a co-OC might be named witth Mehringer running the show. It seems to be a model for some Meyer coaches like Herman, Withers.
