3-pt shooting

Just noting that the team has now made more 3-pointers this season than all of last season. Our designated 3-pt recruit Hernandez is shooting a fantastic 43.5% from 3, and I personally would love to see her take more of them.

Speaking of taking more 3-pt shots, guess who is also shooting 43% from 3? TYLE SCAIFE. Yet she has only taken 21 3-pt shots. Meanwhile Davis, who has taken 38 3-pt shots, is making only 26% of them. I wouldn't mind running more plays to set Scaife open for 3.

Setting up Tyler for threes makes sense to me, especially if a defender comes out to her she can blow right by them and put up a nice, soft pull-up jumper.

Canty should take more, and I have seen Laney hit a few. We really need to open up the inside for our posts and especially Copper.

Tyler taking more threes is really high on my list of things I want to see. If that became a consistent part of her game, she'd pretty much be impossible to defend. (Remember when Cappie added the step-back jumper? Like that.)

Tyler passed up at least three open 3's last game. In at least two of those cases she ended up taking long contested 2-pointers. There is zero reason for her to do that. If she is open from 3, she either needs to pump and drive or take the 3. Passing up open 3's for bad 2's is losing arithmetic.

I completely agree. All we have to do is convince her.

beknighted: "Hey Tyler, how much is it worth when you make a shot inside the big arc?

Tyler: "2 points"

beknighted: "How much is it worth when you should from behind the big arc?

Tyler: "3 points"

beknighted: "why don't you shoot it from behind the big arc?

LOL

Tyler: "Just doing what my coach wants."

(note: not a knock on CVS, just a little satire.)

" Hay Tyler, why don't you take more 3 pt shots?"

"Its just not in my comfort zone right now, but I'm getting there" "When I do, I will shoot 40 or 50% from there".

Before the season is over Hernandez will see more time. And we are all waiting on that time. Right now she is missing too many defensive assignments. She will get it, but like Parker she is a liability on defense in a tight game.

I really think this team will be ready for some great post season play.

And like you Sammy I too wonder why no screens are set for Scaife. Right now she can pretty much create her own shot, but she does some time struggle when the other team sets their defense to stop her.

The problem with this thought is who is handling the ball and making the pass when Tyler is off the ball?

One of two very good point guards: Syessence and Briyona.

All else being equal, id rather have the ball in Scaife's hands - the problem is Davis and Canty aren't the scoring threat Scaife is. when those two handle the ball,. teams can drop back, screens wont really work because they can just double or slide a defender into the space

I agree with redshoes this time. I also think that our opponents know her offensive game is one-dimensional and right now is a situational player off the bench. This makes half-court sets more challenging for her to get off some of her shots.

Everyone knows Hernandez is in to make threes, but that means the defense has to actually guard her on the 3-pt line. That should open up the rest of the court. Hernandez has now proven herself a 3-pt threat. That means she doesn't actually have to make (or even take) 3s when she's in to have an impact on the other team's defense.

+1 - we need the threat of a 3 point shot to loosen up the defense and Cynthia provides this.

Sammybb (or anyone else) can you tell me how that would be applicable in a man defense...by having a defender further from the hoop? Serious question. Not seeing how that has opened up the court to our advantage.
If there was a benefit to our team in terms of the opponents' defense when CH is in, then I'm completely missing that picture.

As I see it it's pretty simple. With no 3 point threats, every defender can take a couple steps back from the 3 pt line. 5 defenders in that space makes it congested for mid range shooters and penetrators. Pulling even one defender out toward the 3 pt line to defend allows more room for the others. Obviously the more 3 pt threats, the less packed the interior becomes.

it's all about limiting help defense. but if Cynthia cant run effectively off the ball and off of screens then she wont get open and when she has the ball, no one is afraid of her going to the basket.

also many teams are just packing in a zone against us so they don't even play man to man that is why Cynthia should be in there more often. tyler is the one who should have the ball because she is the one who can break down the defense and with middle open she can shoot the midrange jumper she is so good at or dish it out to Cynthia..

This exactly. Teams are playing zone or a version of it against Rutgers and it's causing major scoring droughts.
