From a defensive player. PSU expected a close game with RU. Thought RU had a good offensive line and good runners, but they felt good about how their D-line stacked up against them. No discussion about RU's QB being good or bad at downfield passing. PSU wanted to run and possess the ball, and wanted Barkely to get the ball a lot. But, really nothing stood out for him in terms of what RU would do offensively. They were all surprised it was so one-sided. RE: Barkley - he said people at PSU compare him to Ray Rice. Also, said what I have heard many times before - he liked Rutgers and coaches, but he said they have "no juice" (i.e., no stain). Said that Haskins had no interest in Rutgers and played them the whole time. He said he was not a friend of Haskins but knows his circle. He was not sure what would happen if Edsall is fired. Thinks it would depend on who came in.

I wonder if the staff showed up with juice stained shirts on recruiting trips ...how much it would help? Actually I usually have wine stains on my shirt when i'm watching RU games.

Interesting OP....But please enlighten an old fart like myself with the terms "juice & stain" with regard to football teams? Thank you

I just thought PSU had more talented players and the actual Head Coach on the field. Sully me. Thanks for the insight [eyeroll]

U can characterize the information anyway you want NorthNJ, I'm telling you what he said. I thought it was interesting that there was no mention in their preparation about Laviano - neither good nor bad. I asked him point blank if there was any discussion about a lack of a deep ball. He did not recall any mention of that. Did you know that before I posted it? Did you know that people at Penn State say Barkley reminds them of Ray Rice?

All this means is that the coaches are proven winners. Proven winners have stain and juice. Many PSU FB players have told me that about Flood. Not true with Schiano who definitely had stain later in his Rutgers career.

Barkley is full of shit as Haskins had very strong interest & was ours until a job opportunity arose.

Hard to overcome a program that has been nationally relevant for many, many years. I think the school's "stain" is even more important than the coach in most cases. The scandal seems to have had little to no negative effect on their recruiting. We are still very much a question mark to recruits.

Penn State the brand has a lot of mojo. It gets them through the lean years. It got them through the kiddie raping, it will get them through the Franklin era. This, maybe more than anything else, is where Rutgers fall short as a program.

You hit the nail on the thread with all of that. Teams with winning traditions have big support. Rutgers, though successful of late isn't a national program. Until RU wins consistently against national powers, you can't expect anyone to pay attention

Another shot at RU by the OP.
Constantly telling RU fans how the Nit players look down on RU
Maybe true, maybe just BS.
Seems like they see professor bad and give him messages like no stain / juice to pass along to RU fans and he's more than happy to oblige .

I have no idea what "juice" and "stain" mean but it my gen I think it had to do with Monica Lewinsky.

Let me get this straight, a kid from Pa who doesn't actually know a QB from Maryland is telling you he had no interest in RU and was playing us? What advantage does a kid with 50 offers gain from playing RU?

I think it is all a matter of "language"....take the example of our recruiting of Blacknall....he was a RU verbal, seemingly solid for the longest
of times.....he visited PU and probably was swayed by the hyperactivity of their head coach, and Franklins optimism for the future, not to mention their 100,000 size stadium

anyway, Blacknall got swayed to the dark side because in contrast Flood was a much more reserved coach.... one could use the
word "stain" when talking about Franklins recruiting

so Barkley calls that quality "stain or juice"..... I would just call it a really good recruiting tactic.

nothing to see here.

* With an Eastwing.

We love to throw around dates and phrases like 1766, 1869, "The Birthplace...", etc.

But here are some other dates and phrases...1956, 1973..."Rutgers is going big time", "The Big East? Nah, Joe told me it's not a good idea", "Wait, we're out of lobsters? Really? Wow."

And the ones that matter now...11/09/2006, 11/20/2012.

Where we go from the last one is the most important.

Are you guys aware that "stain" is gang lingo? Maybe we should stop using it on here, considering recent events.

Not what PSU players say at all. Most really liked RU and the coaches. They did not like that there was no evidence that they can win big (i.e., playing for conference championships, New Years Day bowls, dare I say NCs).

I'VE NEVER TALKED TO BARKLEY. IT WAS NOT HIM.

Whether you talked to Barkley or some defensive player or some other TTFP player, the person you talked to is full of shit regarding Haskins.

OK, U CAN SAY THAT AND YOU MAY BE RIGHT, BUT THAT IS NOT THE FIRST TIME I HEARD THAT ABOUT HASKINS. NOT SURE HOW YOU KNOW HASKINS' MOTIVES SO INTIMATELY. BUT MAYBE YOU DO.

We have a larger core fan base than what a lot of you guys are getting at.
You're gunna tell me we don't have some of the most loyal fans? If you're willing to suffer with a program for so long, you become a deeply loyal fan... We have that in bunches.

Our floor # in attendance is higher than what our ceiling was not too long ago. The # of fans is fine - just gotta see how many come back stronger when the dust settles.
We'll probably lose some fans (clean program, academic type) and gain some others (football factory fans) -

Are we going to be picking up former Miami hurricane fans moving forward? That's one of the programs with a stronghold on fandom in the tri-state... But they are a dying program whose name is losing value in the northeast and nationally. So they are ripe for the pickin.
There are a few fanbases in this region that we must overtake to get to the next level : Miami, pen st and Notre dame.
Everytime we overtake a fanbase, it makes us stronger. Stronger at recruiting , stronger in media treatment, better attendance and increased attention.
We'll get there

I am 38 and remember the movie "Juice" with Tupac well. The movie's sound track was sick, lead by Eric B and Rakim's "Know the Ledge." If you grew up in the 80s/90s you know what it means to have "Juice." Flood? Any "juice?" BBAHAHAH!! Pernettie, you were such a short sighted fool. What an a$$hole.

WTF is "stain?"

That part doesn't matter.... Your post says these things were said by Barkley about RU not Having stain or juice, to someone, and this someone told you...what difference does that make, providing the Barklry quotes are accurate.... You provided us with what Barkley supposedly said.

Anyway, stain and juice are just two fancy words for coaches that can selling a program.
