Alvarado Final 3

wonder what could be happening behind the scenes, or is it, as folks have mentioned, all to create interest and doubt before his announcement

Never get your hopes up for any recruit until they enroll and start practice.

Cali: You can get lucky and happen to land 2 under recruited studs in basketball (St. Joe's with Jameer Nelson & Dalonte West come to mind).

But I think your point stands for other D1 team sports.

That's just it. You have to get incredibly lucky with under the radar recruits.

And in a league like the B1G, that ain't happening. Even in the A10, look how far back you have to go to give an example.

Teams with talent win big in basketball. Teams that bend or openly break rules get talent. It's easy math.

I do not know the kids game. I will say, his size is a limiting factor. Athleticism is not all that high either, which is a problem. If you cannot break defenses down, the game gets harder for your offense.

The negative to him not coming here is that it is hard to get a better pg than him later in the recruiting process. And pg is the more important spot on the floor.

We will see what happens.

When RU goes that way, and if they go heavily, I will stop watching. I do not think all programs have to sell their souls, give out jobs, to be successful.

If they go, they will lose a fan. There are always better things to focus on in life.

This staff will get enough players to turn the corner, one miss here doesn't change that....if the trend continues, then we can discuss bigger picture, longer term ramifications of whether RU can get the momentum necessary to get where we need to go.....this isn't a smaller league like the Big East, which is the main local competition for local recruits like Alvarado, the B1G is a much more physical league where your size and strength get exposed much quicker.

Geo Baker is a very high level prospect and projects better long term given his height and athleticism.....Alvarado would have been a nice compliment, but by no means a can't miss prospect.....he's not Corey Sanders or Myles Mack as an athlete or scorer.....he is however a true PG, someone not typically seen in our area that have that skill set.

We need a wing that can defend multiple positions, score and get to the basket/erase baskets as a defender, more than undersized QB/PG.....If Alvarado develops into a stronger piece and grows a couple of inches, GT has a steal of a player....if he doesn't, he'll help GT rebuild as a piece to the puzzle.

I am not sure how I feel. I just know that if you really want to win, you have to play the game. At that, I think there are levels of "the game".

Being the squeaky clean wheel while taking losses and the horrible PR around it isn't good for the school. That much I know.

ITs GT, they got a good one.

Is MSU playing the game?Do you think Izzo would allow that? I do not think you have to. I hear you with the levels.

Try not to overact. Our staff has found gems late in the game. Just be happy you have your job, and not the strange recruiting business.

I agree with your sentiments.

The recruit that we needed, we already got. That is Baker. Baker is a far better, more versatile player.

This whole recruitment appears to be exhibit A of the game. This kid Alvarado spoke glowingly of Rutgers. The staff worked tirelessly to get him. From all reports from multiple people, many of whom make a living of being in the know, all predicted Rutgers up until this morning.

Then you have Pastner at GT who undoubtedly knows the game from his time with Calipari while at user friendly schools like Memphis. GT, who is no stranger to penalties, sees their precious basketball program slipping backwards and needs players.

All of sudden, everything changed this morning after it was determined Rutgers was the choice. Why exactly, people know. It may not be made public, but I am sure those in this world have insight into how this all worked.

Good luck to Alvarado, I am sure he was offered something Rutgers just couldn't, and it was more than a nice basketball facility.

For a college sports program that has lacked success for decades another disappointment in recruiting is taken by fans with a shrug .I give the new coaching staff an A for effort but sadly its a steep climb to get any resonance in recruiting until the program shows some success on the court. Waiting for the practice facility to be built is also not a positive when there is so little to say which would impress recruits.

Kids love the attention. It's something we've got to deal with. They want to be shown the love...

yeah I get it guys. I guess I am just tired of going on these dates only to be dumped on the curb in a public display of second fiddle.

I hate that the Lights and Showtime of pro sports has made its way down so far into what used to be an innocent (at least on the outside) desire to just play the game.

Sorry..just an old fart I guess. Now a slightly more depressed old fart. :scream:

On the bright side, we didn't have to watch a video of him taking a cab to NYC

GTECH is a good school in a great city and in a great league.

If thinking that the only reason he went there is because he got something extra makes you feel better great but IMO it's kind of an insult to the kid.

RU and GTECH have very similar situations-----good schools in great leagues with programs down at the moment.

My thoughts on it are that he was the kind of kid distance from home didn't really matter to and Atlanta won out over New Brunswick.

Obviously I was exaggerating my response to the news.

But IMHO this is the exact type of recruit we need at this time. He is a foundation player. If he was 6'4" Duke would have been on him.

We are not getting top 50 kids at this time. We need kids that even though they might not have all the supposed measurables they have the heart to run thru a wall to win. Give me a team of players like that any day.

Disappointed, but right now all the RU MBB program can offer is hope for the future and that includes building a great facility .
GT can match the hope program improves, but can show the facilities (renovated in 2011 ) to make it happen .
Rutgers can only show plans and for some recruits that might not be something they are willing to accept.
