A problem of being the 2nd or 3rd choice for a candidate is, they may not work hard to win because of their disappointment of getting the fat girl instead of the super model. They might take the money and wait for a better job to open. One thing I have to credit Flood for is, he truly wanted to be Rutgers HC and would have taken the job for $60,000.00. If an NFL team wanted Flood he would say no, I am Rutgers' coach.

I agree, winning is the most important thing. I want a coach that works very hard to win, who does great not does good enough.

I agree. Wanting this job and opportunity are very important to me too. Passion, energy and being able to recruit are important as well.

But just to take a coach is WILLING to be coach, but their heart really isn't in it, I don't want either.

Screw that. Get me someone who seems to know what he's doing, offer to pay him an appropriate salary and he'll want the job.

There are coaches all over the country and especially from nj who would love the RU job. It's a big ten job paying millions of dollars in a fertile recruiting territory. Anyone with just the smallest amount of competitiveness and drive would want the opportunity.

He could be this year's Narduzzi, or this year's Mullen.

All great coaches made the jump from coordinator at some point.
If he interviews well, get him (assuming Mullen says no).

I know what you're saying. I just think there are times to take a chance on a hot coordinator and times to go with experience. We could have followed Schiano with a hot coordinator -- we weren't in the Big Ten at the time -- following Flood with one might not be the right time.

I'd rather someone's first head coaching job be in the MAC or AAC than the Big Ten. That's one reason I never wanted Flood to see the field once the Big Ten invite came. I didn't think he was the guy to handle it.

I don't care if they leave one year, two years, or retire with us.

If somebody is successful enough here at RU to get poached after a year, it will:

1) Prove that you can win big at Rutgers, making it more attractive for the next set of candidates
2) Fund our war chest to hire the next coach (via a buyout amount if we write the contract correctly)

Nobody can tell me that we wouldn't be better off if, say, Richt came here, won 10/11 games, top tier bowl, and bolted for another job..

Yes. Wanting it is most important. By your standard, we should all marry the fat chick in HS who was wayyyyy into us.

We need to hire the best candidate we can convince to come. Good coaches are going to work very hard wherever they go. It is in their DNA. They aren't going to phone it in. Their job, and even if they look at RU as a stepping stone, their next job, depends on winning. This is the reason I never understood the fear that a coach will leave us...in order to do that... they need to win a heck of a lot.

Rutgers fans always seem to have this insecurity about being wanted. It's unattractive... and all the popular coaches can smell it on us.

Totally agree with this statement. The RU job is a good job nowadays. Flood didn't ruin the job; he just didn't do a good enough job. The new coach will walk into a far better situation than any new coach in Rutgers history, except for Flood himself.

We need someone who knows the game of football well.
We need someone who will run a clean program.
We need someone who will hire an excellent staff.
We need someone who will motivate the alums and the State as a whole to fully support the program.
We need someone to WIN FOOTBALL GAMES.

You cite all the positives about the job. Unfortunately there are negatives as well. And for a coach with a choice, the negatives might outweigh the positives.

I do not see it at other P5 programs.
