Looks like freshman superstar G Diamond Johnson has entered the portal, per multiple tweets. If true (and I don't know if it is), this will be just AWFUL for C Viv and the women's team.

This girl has the talent to play for teams that compete for national championships. Would you want to stick around to lose in the first round of the Big Ten tournament and the NCAA tournament every year for 4 more seasons?

Why would she come here in the first place? Still don't see how excellent playesr still want to come to RU in this stagnant offense.

This is not the first high level player to leave C . Vivian Stringer’s fold over the past several seasons and for a variety of reasons. This one hurts since it is not over playing time . Maybe it’s just the time for Diamond to explore other teams and more in tune coaches. Will people be telling this young player good riddance? I don’t think so. B1G loss especially with Arella graduating. That is a whole bunch of offense going away in a few months.

It’s a new era. A lot of kids today aren’t into building a team and seeing it through. They want to go to a ready made situation. This all happened once LeBron took his talents to Miami. I’m not saying they shouldn’t have the right but that was a tipping point.

Be careful with what you say . If we ever want them to turn the corner maybe that might be a suggestion. We want but we really don’t want to get to those days of yesterday year.

Kids normally want to win and they more than some on this board know that’s not happening with the offense we run.

If true this is just awful. Diamond is one of the best players in the country.
One of the best freshmen for sure. The best players in the country go to the elite schools like Uconn.Stanford,South Carolina, Baylor and Maryland.

She is one of the best frosh in the country and she evidently wants to progress in her game. Diamond won’t do that here unfortunately. Stagnated offense . Overrated 55 defense. And a Hall of Fame coach who can’t win in the NCAA tournament anymore it seems.

Ugh. Dare to say it’s time to go ?
CVS is a living legend. She gets to stay as long as she wants. One thing Hobbs could do is pay her a salary commensurate with the results over the last decade.

Also, I'm not sure you blame this on CVS. I get the points about maybe Diamond doesn't like the offense or defensive philosophy. But she knew that coming in. From my limited exposure watching games, T-Mack would yell at Diamond. Maybe she's not built for that kind of team chemistry.

Then you will always be on the outside looking in . This has nothing to do with legacy is it? Yeah she’s a frosh AA and is soft sure that’s not this player .

The game has passed her by Lou. Her accomplishments are fantastic, nobody’s arguing that, but she can’t even get us out of the first round of the Big Ten tournament with ALL that talent for crying out loud. I’d like to think that she would understand she’s not moving the program forward anymore let alone to where she once had it, and would realize it’s time to retire, but I’m pretty sure she has absolutely zero intentions of admitting that and doing so.

Things happen, this is not a good one.
But works in favor of all the CVS and RUWBB Chicken Littles that make everything concerning that program : THE SKY IS FALLING and in reality they like it that way so they can drive the RU WBB out.
The RU WBB program has been a proven winner, but admittedly not a post season one for awhile.
Glad to see Women's basketball being discussed here.
Just wonder where are the get off my lawn poster that pop up when RU WBB and its HC are complemented by a poster or two .
The complimenting is few and far between, but the get out of here is a usual reaction by some members of this board.[roll]

Agree 100%. I posted the exact same point about the effects of LeBron "taking his talents to Miami" during the same transfer topic of discussion on here a year or two ago. James Harden and the Nets is going to have just as much of an influence on college athletes.

Lol..that didn't last too long...knew the title alone was being a transfer ticket

Let's speak facts. IIRC, we've been earning byes and double-byes for the first and second rounds of the Big 10 Tourney.

Fair enough, that’s an excellent point, but I think someone like diamond Johnson came here expecting better. My personal opinion that’s all.

We finished 3rd in the 14-team Big Ten this year. Be careful what you wish for. 1 player, clearly she wasn’t happy being in a limited offense. It is what it is

We all expect to see a better end, with a deep run in the tourney going forward. From my eyes, we're building toward that. It's Diamond's turn to get the keys to the car and she could drive around and pick up another Elite teammate or two, to build on the class that she came in with. Right now, she has the opportunity to create what it is she expects.

But she’s looking to leave the team.

Mack is leaving so that is not why she is leaving. CVS is a shell of who she was. Just watch her throughout the games. If Diamond thought the fresh are going to be great she would stay but evidently she does not. Smithing coaching indictment

Can we at least be debating with some facts in front of us here?

1. RU's offense averaged 75ppg this year (Top 50 in nation); and minus one Nebraska game, I'd argue the games the team lost, defense was a bigger problem than offense. Diamond averaged 17.5ppg of that.
2. RU got a #3 seed in the B10 tourney, a bye, and then lost in the quarters to #6 seed Iowa, a team that earned itself a #5 seed in the NCAAs and made it to the Sweet 16.
3. RU got a #6 seed in the NCAAs and was upset in the first round after losing a lead; again, I'd say defense was the culprit here.
4. CVS can still bring in some high ranked recruits (This past class, Zippy, etc), but she is not recruiting at the level she once was. In fact, none of our three seniors--Arella, Tekia, Mael--were top 100 HS recruits. And Arella is about to be a first round WNBA pick.
5. I don't have stats to back this up, but the transfer rate at RU is not dissimilar to other schools.
6. We also lost Maroi Davenport to UGA. Maori said to press her decision to transfer had nothing to do with RU, but with wanting to be closer to home. Regardless, she was not a big factor at UGA this year.
7. None of us know why Diamond has decided to enter the transfer portal--I watched multiple games this year where the announcers commented on how tight the team seemed on the bench. It's a fact her loss would be huge; it is not a fact--at all--why she is leaving.
8. Had RU beaten BYU, they would have faced an Arizona team that is now in the Final 4. COudl they have beaten that team? I think they could have. But no doubt, this was a disappointing finish .

SO here's where the program stands, imo: If you count the past year, RU has made/would have made three straight NCAA tournaments. Their seeds were #6, #7, and I think last year they probably would have a been a #9/#10. So according to seed, RU has been considered one of the top 32 programs in the country in two of the past three years. Now, they've been upset in the first rounds, so you can argue they are actually worse than that, but tournaments can be weird.

So in short, I'd say here's where the program is: Consistently top 40, occasionally top 25. In most years, a top 6 B10 team. This is far from where CVS previously had the program, but it's not a disaster.

Okay. Let's debate with facts. Coach Stringer's won-lost percentage and league results were much better in her first 10 years than in the last ten years. One more fact.......it is not accident that highly recruited players have left the program and are planning to leave the program. Why is it so difficult to say that Coach Stringer is not as effective as she once was? Nothing that has happened in the past few years takes away from her lifetime coaching achievements. Let's just call it as it is.

CVS just brought in the 8th ranked class, yet the top player is transfering again, just like that big did last year..remember her, all the hubbub of her not being able to play in high school and she floundered last year.

True its not a disaster but its clear that the program is basically in quicksand. We cannot move forward and are basically trapped in time right now...a program that will not really be top 25 but wont be awful and will make the NCAA every so often but not a threat to beat anyone or not really relevant nationally.

Coming off of what Grentz did and what CVS did up until 2009, thats tough to swallow for the progam

Program needs energy, CVS should pick a young energized coach and become an assistant to her and work with her

^^^ THIS

Per NJ.com, her contract is up in June. This is the opportunity to have that tough conversation with the idea of offering CVS to be part of the solution to envision the future of RU WBB. If so, extend her through next year so she can get recognition with fans in the stands. In parallel, develop a shortlist of candidates. And not just CVS former players or assistants, look at people like Duffy at Marquette, the coach at Missouri St, etc.

This is going to tough any way you slice it, especially for a legend like CVS. RU should be a very desirable job - in the BIG10 with much improved facilities, a program with a long tradition of excellence and a fan base who cares about WBB.

You lengthy post (I removed most to highlight my response) is appreciated. CVS is a coaching legend but she just doesnt have it anymore. The program is not only in quicksand as bac said above, but it's also slowly hemmorhaging. She isnt paid to produce produce consistently top 40 teams, nor should the fanbase be complacent with top 40 or an occasional top 25.
