"Are More New Jersey Colleges Doomed to Collapse?"

I'm sweating bullets if I'm a school like Rider or some of these obscure small NJ private schools like Drew or Centenary.
I'm also seeing some of the better small private PA schools extending their admissions application deadline and offering application fee waivers. Guessing that's either because applications are down or they want more applications to help lower their acceptance rates. SUNY ran an application fee waiver for ~2 weeks back in Oct to probably do the same.

It's a great idea but the NJ legislature might try to interfere with it. On paper a school like NJCU would be very well positioned to bring in NY students but they seem to be twisting in the wind.

Ofc there is an overall tie to the demographics in the states with ones like Maine being essentially retirement homes and CO and TX growing rapidly. Makes sense for NJ to be in the middle, we're good but not growing by leaps and bounds. What is interesting with PA is that they are growing slowly or perhaps even declining slowly but their college issues seem much bigger than the decline. I have heard of NJ kids going places like West Chester- fascinating especially if they can't sell it in state.
Because it’s very “collegey” if that makes sense…you’re away, not too far but out of state, cute campus and nice little downtown that likes having the school in it.

I get the logic of going to an OOS public if you can't get into RU...but how many people outside of PA and maybe NJ have heard of these schools?

I don't know if these schools are attracting NJ students these days. The people I know who went there are my fellow millennials. Gen Z won't go if it's not on TikTok, lol,

Zoomers were losing their minds in that approximately 12 hours where TikTok went dark, lol. And yes, I'd bet money next to no one outside of NJ has heard of schools like Rider, Georgian Court, Centenary, etc., and they will be the most at risk to going under in the coming years.

That can be said about many places and schools.

We’re just better read and informed on here.

True, but I don't think I've ever come across an alum of the small PA schools in a work context. In a friendly context, yes, but not to the extent I have the small NJ and NY privates and publics. Could be living in North Jersey now.

Of course it is.

West Chester used to be the one in PA you went to for Physical Therapy. Not sure that’s the case anymore but back in the day it was.

Had to look that up, never even knew it existed.
For some reason, the name was changed from Jersey City State. New name is very awkward. If Montclair acquires it, that will give them three campuses—Upper Montclair, Bloomfield, and Jersey City. If Kean takes over, they will have locations -Union, Toms River, and Jersey City.

It was to try and distance itself from the actual Jersey City.

The “New” part in front was to make it seem more connected to NJ itself, and less the city.

And you are correct, very awkward.

Plans to gut Dept of Education are underway

Technically it would take the Congress to erase it but it can be defunded and dismantled until its just an empty gourd with a legacy label

I don't think it worked- I think it's like the CUNY of Hudson County if you look at the demographics.

That’s fine as it’s still another option for those who whether it be financial or otherwise now have something.
That's like Trenton State College renaming itself The College of New Jersey.

Lmao their alums are so delusional. They think they are Princeton Jr when us Rutgers alums know the truth about that school.
Well that one did work. I mean who would want to be confused with a prison, right?

For what it has become TCNJ did very well in that department.

And fyi, that was the original name of Princeton University.

Trust me,I'm fully aware that Princeton's original name was that, which begs the question, why did they allow Trenton State to acquire that name? I mean money talks so maybe they gave Princeton a sizable donation to acquire the name.

Or Princeton didn’t care…because of the “New Jersey” part. As they certainly don’t need the money.

I’m sure Old Nassau only uses it, New Jersey, when then have to.

Kind of like how the Liberty Science Center who used to NOT want people to know they were in Jersey City.

I agree. I am just saying I don't think NJCU ever got many students outside of Hudson County.

But ironically now if Montclair or Kean buys them they're going to be screaming Jersey City from the rooftop.

While it's not in the most exclusive part of town, it's in a nice, safe, middle class neighborhood and the right school could do something cool with it while keeping up its historic mission. I thought SPU would be interested personally. They didn't seem to do much with their tourney appearance, and they are located much closer to the hipper part of town, and you could walk to the PATH from their campus on a nice day.

There was a time, when it was still Jersey City State College, they got them from WAY out of Hudson County. Maybe there on visa, maybe new arrivals but they weren't born at Margart Hague.

I think this has been the case everywhere for a long time. Esp in NJ where the crackdown on OOS students didn't apply to out of country ones. Interestingly the same loophole in IL and TX as far as I can tell when they have a similar law.

Though I heard we got a ton of OOS apps this year...not sure how that will bear out on acceptance.
