Ohio State football news and views: Do you know anything about Isaiah Prince?
"I get that Schiano arrived in Columbus with a big reputation off his head coaching gigs at Rutgers and in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But Chris Ash held it down pretty well running the back end of the Ohio State defense the last two seasons before he was hired to lead Rutgers, and co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell has been a part of leading defenses for 15 seasons around here.

So Schiano hasn't changed the world. Hooker is a talent and the opposing quarterbacks haven't been much to speak of. So let's not go overboard thinking Schiano is teaching secret pick-six moves in practice."

The facts speak for themselves.

Schianos boys loved ints. Even after he left his players were good at interceptions under flood his first year. And then the graduated and the talent was gone.

You could tell that reporters generally don't like Schiano. Theres very little discussion in that article except some knocks on Schiano. I think in general, he's condescending to reporters because he thinks (maybe rightly so)................who is this dipsh@t? much like pacells had an attitude towards reporters. Schiano just doesn't have the wins and the power that Parcells had so this type of reporting is what you get as a by-product blowback......

If Luke Fickell was so good, why did Urban bring in Chris Ash (and now Schiano) and effectively neuter him by demoting him from DC to co-DC?

Schiano won't be there long. Probably back to the NFL as a D Coordinator or even a college HC job.

Ohio State 2013 pass defense ranked 110 in the country and Meyer was alarmed at the big plays dating back to October of that year. The B1G Championship against Michigan State and their bowl game against Clemson saw huge pass plays downfield exposing Ohio State. Ash came in and 2014 saw a significantly improved ranking of 28 in pass defense (certainly also due to the secondary talent on the field).

Watched Ohio State -Oklahoma game and love the Buckeyes secondary. Great athletes that ball hawk, as well as, are extremely physical. They knocked the stuffing out of Mark Andrews, a 250 pound WR, on numerous plays. That game was way too physical for the Sooners to compete.

I think Schiano is doing a good job at Ohio State and the defensive recruits especially DB this year is special.

I believe the stat is Ohio State ranks 128th in the country this year when it comes to number of returning starters. Only six returning starters. That's it. Yeah, they're talented, but if you can keep what Ash/Fickell had going with new personnel plugged in, then you know a thing or two.

I agree with you. But I distinctly recall a number of the defensive back field experts on this board berating Schiano for not instructing the players to "turn around and look for the ball."

Schiano's "boys" had 3 picks in the NFL yesterday. Not sayin he didn't coach them up but the talent has to be there too. Greg may deserve more credit for recruiting them in the first place.

Only Logan was a 4 star recruit so I guess they learned something from Schiano so said Belichick. You don't think he's using that in recruitment.

Not saying he didn't and yes, of course he should use it. I meant he identified the talent in HS kids and got them to RU. It was a complement.

Schiano is no longer at RU. Why can't we just forget about him? He left for the big bucks and took almost our entire coaching staff with him. How much did he really care about RU? RU let him have a home on school property and he left us high and dry. He is a good defensive coach but his personality never showed me that he was very friendly. Everything was so secretive and he kind of spoke down to some people. He never won a championship in 11 years at RU. I'm sure he will wind up somewhere else soon but he couldn't get it done in the NFL.

Bitter much?

The jilted lover routine is getting tiresome. He did what was best for his family and his career. Most of us would do the same in our own professions. Stop being such a hypocrite.

Maybe he felt that half the fan base wanted him fired and needed job security. I will stop commenting on Schiano when the haters stop hating on Schiano.

Kelly at ND could be gone at the end of the year. Now THAT would be interesting.
I argued after Greg left the Bucs he'd be getting looked at by P-5 programs for their HC
position.
But even I think the top programs won't be looking at him and a bottom feeding P-5 school is his best P-5 chance for HC.
One year as OSU's HC isn't going to get him into South Bend if Kelly's canned.

I expect OSU will start getting good at blocking kicks now. Obviously RU no longer is.

You deduced this all from that little blurb. Try again Kreskin.

I concur with Blitz8RUCrazy. Schiano stayed a lot longer than most coaches would have in his position. After the 2006 season Schiano was getting calls from many different top ranked programs that were looking for a savior. Much to his credit, he stayed at RU even though he was being offered salaries many times what RU was paying him. He stayed another 6 years. I personally thank coach Schiano for what he did for RU. He took arguably the worst program in D1 football, a perennial laughingstock, and turned them around to a respectable program. He left at the right time to continue to grow and RU has continued to grow too. It hasn't been easy for either coach Schiano and RU but both are moving in positive directions.

I dont even like Schiano but leaving for the NFL and then taking coaches after no NFL coach would work for him, he had no choice. Can't fault Schiano for that alone.
Greg is a very good defensive mind. A poor HC and is known for pissing off media and speaking down to people. (though, he never spoke down to fans, he was very good when it came time to talk to fans)...I'm not sure how much his mention in the Sandusky case may hurt him for at least a couple of years in a high profile job

"is known for pissing off media and speaking down to people"???

According to who? You?

I don't think Kelly is gone but half the stupid ND fan base wants him fired. If he goes, they will regret it. The fan base thinks they should always be in the race for NC like Ohio State and Alabama, FANS ARE SO DUMB.

Yesrutgers, I am curious because it seems like the ex-players have different reactions to Schiano. I am going by a very small sample, but one guy I know loves him (and still stays in touch) and another guy seems to roll his eyes at the mention of his name. (These guys were both major contributors.) Is that common?

It's normal for a head coach to take his guys with him to a new job. The only reason why people were upset about that is because Pernetti picked Flood to take over. Under normal circumstances, somebody from outside the program would have been hired, and he would have brought in his own guys, turning over the coaching staff anyways.

seems to be very common and you would have to be Sigmund Freud to figure it out. I've seen players who he singled out and abused them and degraded them for no reason at all and they love him. Others who he catered to and they hate him.

You may have missed the part where I said he was great with fans. Actually, he could be very engaging with fans, often he would make someone feel like they were the only person in the room with him.
But if you were on the "business" end...yes, he was not all that friendly.

Please.... the guy stayed for years in a conference that was crumbling and falling apart around him. How much did he care about RU? I'd say quite a lot. He did turn out a few big job offers to stay here.

Those who hate him must really hate the fact that he will forever be remembered as the guy who helped turn around RU football. There's a chance RU doesn't enter the Big Ten if it wasn't for Schiano...

Point 1 - I agree with but point 2- even the biggest anti Schiano guys will admit they appreciate what he did do for the program. We are just glad he is not back here

We choose not to go for punt blocks, because this season we have one of the best returners in college football. A guy who is a threat to bust one and take it to the house anytime he fields a punt or flip the field in our favor.

I fully admit that I was not a Schiano fan by the time he left. I just felt like he plateaued here and we needed a new voice. I often wonder what the trajectory of Rutgers football would have been if he did take another job soon after 2006. Would one of his assistants have taken over? Would we have attracted a somewhat prominent coach to replace him, given the talent he was leaving behind. A young up-and-comer from the MAC maybe? I think many felt the program would take a hit if he had accepted the Michigan job. But in hindsight, I'm not so sure. We certainly wouldn't have turned to Flood at that juncture and we still had a lot of momentum.

He didnt . Urban always has co offensive coordinators and co defensive coordinators. When Ash came in replaced Everitt Winters who became head coach at James Madison and became co cordinator with Fickell

Most likely would have had someone like Golden as HC...whew

Nope, I got that part. I've never heard anything about him pissing off the media or are you just making that up. By the way, if you want to watch his interviews with the Ohio State media they are all over YouTube. You'll find him to be very cordial.

OK- I must have been sleeping through those years lol.

Are you freakin serious? Teams punt 2 - 3 times more than they kick FGs. Why would we block a punt, with #1 returning them?

Think before you post negative bullshit.

Grant is good but he's not even a top 10 returner. It would be folly to not try to block a punt deep in opponent territory in order to hope for a big return. Its not like Devin Hester is back there. Jabril Peppers is better than Grant and Michigan still blocks punts. RU doesn't block FGs anymore either. RU used to block 4 kicks a year but last year that ended along with a lot of other things.

"Although Peppers was on the field to receive the punt, the Michigan special teams got the Wolverines right back in the ballgame with a blocked punt and a score to trim the lead in half"

Are you kidding? Not top 10? How many career td returns does Peppers have?
