Duggan did a piece on an ESPN piece where coaches could comment anonymously on other teams in the conference. The ESPN piece requires a subscription.

Here's what was said about RU:

Big Ten defensive coach on Rutgers quarterback Laviano:
"He either sees the rush or doesn't see it at all. There was no in-between. He struggled with recognition of what was coming at him ... so we knew he was going to get whacked a lot."

Big Ten defensive coach on Rutgers' running game:

"Coach (Tom) Herman's system — whether at Rice, Iowa State, Ohio State or Houston — has proven to be solid. They have running backs that can all play, but I'd worry about that O-line. We imposed our will a little bit against them."

Big Ten offensive coach on Rutgers' defensive personnel fitting Chris Ash's schemes:

"I don't see his defense being much different than it was at Ohio State, Arkansas and Wisconsin. But he doesn't have an East Coast staff and he's not an East Coast guy."

Duggan could not make sense of that second sentence:

A blind man could tell that Laviano isn't a good QB. Another coach telling it is no surprise.

What is this coach alluding to?

I wonder what that coach thought about our prior "East Coast guy" and his "East Coast staff?" After all their "East Coast" roots brought us bushels of wins last year.

That's how you say something without really saying anything. Just sounds like he's just killing time and was probably peer pressured for a quote.

wtf does being an east-coast guy have to do with being a good coach. Is there anything more annoying than "east coast guy, west coast guy, jersey ties" etc.

You guys blasting CL are ridiculous. This was his first season as a major college QB. He had great games against Washington St, Michigan St, Kansas, Indiana, Maryland and had bad games against tOSU, Wisky, Michigan and Nebraska. I guess the rest of the team had great games against those teams and he was the only weak link?

Laviano stats (as a sophomore) - 61% completions, 16 TDs, 12 Ints
Jared Goffs's stats (as a sophomore) - 60% 18 TDs, 10 Ints

That's not a huge difference. When you back out those 4 bad games, his stats were 68% 16 TDs, 7 Ints. I'm NOT saying he will be really good, but his first season was better than he gets credit for on this board IMO considering the whole team was completely over-matched in those 4 games.

"But he doesn't have an East Coast staff and he's not an East Coast guy." Perhaps the coach they were quoting anonymously was Mr. Flood.[/QUOTE]

Actually, many on this board were screaming the same thing when Ash and his staff were hired

10 of those 16 TD's were too Carroo. Now he's running a spread he's going to have to react a lot quicker and be more decisive with his reading of the defense. Even if he starts every game he won't come anywhere near 16 TD's again in his career.

How many yards did they throw for?

You're kind of proving my point here. If Carroo had not missed 4 games, it's very possible that CL would have had 20+ TDs and people would be saying he's an up-and-comer. QBs do need talent around them to be successful. Regarding the spread, we'll have to see if he can react fast enough. At least he should not get pressured as much.

Even if true the point is was he the best we had available? Reasonable people can disagree but that is no simple question for anybody not in the QB room or at practice.

Whoa, those are Goff's stats as a TRUE FRESHMAN (first true freshman to start at QB in Cal's opener). You also left out that he passed for about 1,300 yards more. Here is the (true) sophomore (redshirt) sophomore comparison.

Goff 62% 35 TDs, 7 Ints.
Laviano stats (as a sophomore) - 61% completions, 16 TDs, 12 Ints

You're welcome.

I am still going to see how CL works with these coaches and this offense before I make a judgment. To my eye, he obviously had some issues, made a lot of mistakes and doesn't have a gun. My biggest concern is that on easy throws, he just never seemed to hit his guy on target that should lead to more YAC.
This offense should help him some as it should be designed to hide weaknesses. Last year- the kid had NO help at all. Outside of Carroo, what other WR fought for the ball, came back to the QB when pressure got on him etc?

Don't try to make sense of this article. They predicted that MSU would finish 4th in the east behind even Penn State. Sure.

Our position at QB was and still is weak. We all know we have had OL problems, it is up to the coaching staff to do what it can to lessen the negatives of a poor OL.
My expectations for this season are not all that high. Just hoping we see some improvement in general and not too many blowouts.

Sorry, any game in which a QB "clocks" the ball on 4th down on the potential game winning drive cannot be considered a "great game". Don't care what the stats say.

I can only imagine recruiting, and the staff's lack of East Coast contacts, which he is implying will make it difficult to lure talented kids. But so far, that hasn't proven to be the case, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
