BACATOLOGY: NCAA ANALYSIS 3/7......NEW UPDATE 3/12 1PM PAGE 37

Just thought of a scenario …that could happen

Since they got rid of the rule about confrence teams not playing each other until the regional final ….since Rutgers and Michigan are on the bubble …there is a chance that they match up Rutgers and Michigan in Dayton on Tuesday ….and this way, other conferences get to play the other two spots and one gets to the Round of 64….

They'll include them as they run down whatever region they wind up in.

The key to watch for is not seeing Wake Forest, Notre Dame, a second A10 team, Xavier, etc pop up.
Or just do my plan and go for a long walk at 6:00.

if we win the play-in sure…no argument.

I don’t believe making a playin game in Dayton and losing is making the ncaa tournament. That’s why it’s called a “play in” game…to play into the torunsment.

playing in MSG in any tournament is better than losing a game in Dayton. It’s not even a question. Imo
this is a pointless argument for us because we will never know how we would do in the "other" tournament

If we get bounced out of Dayton, we will wonder how we would have done it the NIT, play in the NIT, wonder how we would have done in Dayton

so, since we have to make the choice, as fans, I go with
the play in game for the NCAA, assuming that is the best they offer

we could get bounced out of the NIT just as easily as the NCAA play in game, if the team is not into it fully.....losing early in the NIT is the worst result

No one will be wondering how we would do in the NIT.. no one

1000000% I want the play in game. That’s not my argument.

if I had to chose between the Play In game and the NIT..it’s play In game by a million.

My argument is making the NIT semis is better, imo, then losing a play-in game. And yes…we will never know how we’d fare in one over another. Agree

The NIT would mean you were considered not good enough or have a resume good enough to qualify for the NCAA tournament (thus the winner would be #69).

Being selected for the First Four would have it etched in history that you qualified for the NCAA tournament (thus 2 banners, should have been 3 due to COVID). This matters way more than winning the also-ran tournament

once again, I’m not comparing nit to play in game.

It won’t happen…you’ve already played Michigan twice, so they’d only go with that matchup if it was unavoidable (ie, another Big Ten team also in first 4).

So we have to eliminate 4 out of these 10 and 5 if Davidson loses.

After spending a solid hour comparing these 10 bubble teams' resumes, I truly believe the 4 worst are Notre Dame, Wake Forest, SMU, and Xavier. My rankings are Wyoming, Texas A&M, Rutgers, Michigan, OU, Indiana, Xavier, SMU, Wake, Notre Dame in that order. Notre Dame with 4-9 Q1 and Q2 and Michigan has 4-8 Q1a and Rutgers has a 5-5Q1a. Can't believe these teams are even being considered against each other!

Try it for yourself. It's hard, but pretty fun!

Agreed with all of the above outside of Wyoming.…strength of wins should he a major factor here and think Wyoming is behind a bit on some of those schools

Your argument is just an opinion. You believe that winning the NIT is somehow a better look or more impressive than losing in the First Four. Sure there are teams that win the NIT that are better than a lot of the NCAA teams. This does not mean that an NIT champion would win the First Four game. There is no correlation and impossible to prove.

You hold it as some kind of badge of honor, for a team to take their heartbreak and take it out on the NIT field.

My point is that there is no badge of honor for a tournament that no one remembers who won anyways.

52 pages….bELieve

I don’t wAnt anything to do with playing Michigan..they always seem to be our kryptonite
we have only beaten them once over recent years, and that was a death struggle.... I would also not have wanted to play Penn state in an early B1G round......certain teams are trouble and being seeded higher than them means nothing.

no one remembers who lost the first four each year either.
I’ve said earlier in this thread…both are disappointments.

so no there shouldn’t be a “badge of honor” for either. But yes, give me an NIT semi at MSG over a loss in Dayton.

but certainly give me Dayton over the NIT.

I actually remember Mich St losing in last year's first four because I picked them to go to the final 4.

While I don't like it, I think the only way we get in is Dayton. The early season disasters and losing to Minnesota and Northwester probably sealed our fate.
I really think people dont understand how bad the Indiana resume was prior to this weekend.

Awful non-conference schedule

9-11 against the easiest B1G schedule imaginable.

Not one decent road win all year. All “neutral” site wins were in Indianapolis.

They got nine games against MD, PSU, NE, MN! 7 of their 9 B1G wins came from that group. For comparison, UM only played 5 games against that group.

Against a standard B1G schedule, IU goes what 7-13?

I think they played their way in this weekend but I don’t see how two good days gets them out of Dayton.

The committee traditionally doesn’t put too much emphasis on conference tournaments at the expense of the season.

If I had to guess which B1G teams goes to Dayton, I think IU will be the team.

Notre Dame’s one Q1a win is against Kentucky. That’ll be enough to get in for the ACC team.

Can’t be, you can only play a team twice and that’s 4 teams so 8 games .. and they didn’t play any of those in the Big Tens

I’ll put my 2 cents in on the NIT. It’s a “consolation” tournament. It brings me back to my sophomore year in HS in 1979. It was our last wrestling match before the districts, and NJ Hall of Fame referee (Teddy Resnick) asks me before the match how I thought I would do the following week at the Districts. I was facing a challenge bracket, so I said 3rd place. The 3/4 match would have been a “consolation” match as back then, only 1st and 2nd made it to the regions. So Teddy then said something I will never forget; he proceeds to say that “you can’t wipe your ass with 3rd place”. That response changed my line of thinking ever since, including the following week when as the 5th seed, I won the Districts.

So, if you want my opinion, you can’t wipe your ass with an invitation to the NIT. Go big or go home!

The NIT like the Gator Bowl at 5-7. Do it to get extra practice and playing time for the futures if Ron and Caleb don’t return. Get Jalen Miller shooting some FGs, get Dean some time at the 4 with Cliff in there, etc

Mike likes to be a contrarian.
