Beating washington would be BEYOND huge to start of the season and the Ash era...

If coach Ash lives up to our expectations, he will not lose his very first game ever as a head coach. Our team is going to be ferocious. We are going to kick their ass and its not going to be close.

..and that's heaping a HUGE expectation on him, and the team, regardless of our expectations for the future.

I took in a Washington/Oregon game there many years ago and remember people boating right up to the stadium which was very cool. This is a great venue to see the Ash era kick-off.
One of the cooler road games to attend. The stadium has recently been remodeled and the Pacific Northwest would make a great extended vacation for you "flatlanders". So much raw beauty to see within a few hours drive of Seattle, not to mention the city itself. Did I mention some great seafood?

Would be a huge upset if we win that game. UW is coming into next season with a squad. Their young QB is a baller.

I'm in Seattle now, visiting. The weather has been spectacular: sunny days with temps in high 60s. Spent the week exploring the city's neighborhoods, and was at "U-Dub" yesterday. Beautiful campus. Really. Cherry blossoms just past peak in the Quad but still a terrific sight. Very neat college environment, all in all. But not too much buzz about the Huskies in the Final Four (WBB), though. Anyway, off to Mt. Ranier today. Then heading over via ferry to the San Juan Islands for a few days.

You will love the San Juans. Have considered moving to Orcas Island and recently had one of my retired P.O. buddies move there. Good luck with Mt. Ranier. On my last visit there, the last 1/2 mile of the road to Paradise was finally plowed the 1st week of July.

Yes, a win would really be great but a loss is not the end of the world either. I would rather see us struggle a little in the beginning and gradually get stronger (i.e. to the point we're at least competitive) as the season progresses as opposed to starting well then get worse. I remember Doug Graber started his career with a nice 24-0 win over Kentucky then we all know what happened over his coaching term.

We just moved to the Seattle area for a job opportunity. I've been here since mid-December and the family came out at the beginning of February. These past few days are supposedly a precursor of what the summer is like from end of June through September and it's been beautiful. We took the ferry over to Whidbey Island over the weekend and went to Deception Pass....gorgeous spot!

I echo that it should make a great road trip for those that want to come out here.....I'm looking forward to that game as I don't know if we'll be able to make it back to RU in the fall.....one of the downers about moving was giving up season tix. The UW women have been in the news quite a bit....one of the things I've noticed is the positive press coverage given to the local college sports teams. There are of course critical articles about UW and WSU supposedly secretive presidential searches but that's not surprising given that Seattle actually elected a socialist councilwoman....but they do support the sports teams. My daughters little league softball team is having an outing to see the UW women who are pretty good so looking forward to that. Talking to some of the sports minded parents the perception of RU is better than some may think! Nice to hear anyway.

Washington is rebuilding and Petersen took advantage of the recruiting success of Sarkisian left behind....I think in game one, Washington ran out two QB at Boise State as a pretty solid underdog and eventually played a true frosh QB who was really coached properly. They improved every month and ultimately have a running game that RU will need to handle to have any chance of winning.

Husky Stadium is still one of the most intimidating environments in the country if Washington is playing well and I fully expect their fans to use RU as a spring board for a big season. If RU can survive the first 10 minutes of the game, we will have a contest. If not, it may get ugly early. The longer the game stays close, the air will come out of the stadium if we survive the 1st quarter.

RU has playmakers that can get things done (Grant, Martin, Hicks), so it will depend on the OLine avoiding false starts and maintaining their composure. It's really much easier to get a team ready through the summer and training camp when you have a legitimate opponent to start with, vs a cupcake. I always maintain that RU plays to the caliber of their opponents IF they feel like they can compete with the opponent. If this was at Oregon, USC, UCLA or Stanford, you might see an intimidation factor or unsure type of play from Laviano (or Rettig), that would filter down through the rest of the roster.

I don't think Washington carries that reputation of a team that RU cannot compete against or they arrive feeling like they cannot win. I believe that Grant, Hicks and Martin can match up with any three playmakers Washington can line up on offense. At that point, it will be QB play and what defensive coordinator, makes the adjustments quicker, to slow down the other opponent.

Vegas probably has something from 10 to 13 in favor of the Huskies.

With many thinking we may see some rotating QB's, why not have them working on specific plays independently and bringing the guy in who has the skill to run "his" plays when necessary?
If we try to go with one guy, it makes sense that he will have a pretty thin play book for the first game.

I've been booked for months for this trip we loved Seattle when we played the Cougars can't wait to get back to Seattle the food and city were awesome. Only thing I will skip this time is the alumni gathering/AARP meeting with the cold food and the tickets for beer but to each his own maybe in 20 years il do that again.

Spent today on Mt. Rainier. CAVU. Warm. Sunny. Spectacular landscape. Road open and dry all the way from Longmire to Paradise, although once at Paradise only snowshoers were off the lot. Mrs. Pinehurst was mildly alarmed/amused at the "Volcano Evacuation Route" signage along the roadside, as well as the warning/instructional signs re: avalanches and flash floods on a hike via a roadside trail to a waterfall. The big melt is on.

Guys

I can't think of any other way to reinforce the HARD work these guys are putting in and the way they are buying in to the new coaching staff than getting a hard earned win on the road against a legit level pac-12 team on the road in a hostile environment and big crowd.

And...let's be honest...we really need that win to get some buzz coming into a five out of six game homestand....where three of them are very very unlikely to expect a win at this point

Big difference in buzz being 3-0 leading to 3-3 than 2-1 leading into 2-4...especially with three winnable games thereafter

love to have the buzz of a Rutgers stadium at is 3-0 RU vs a top 15 Iows coming in...we need that buzz for all that we do...

Be huge to get that win on September 3rd in Washington!!!
"reinforce hard work"? Reward hard work. ....English professor

Yo EL the first statement is a blatant LIE. He drops in the basket at 40 yeads a number of times this year. But I must disagree with Last statement it was a TEAM failure (very poor blocking and sloppy route running and bad hands) but Laviano did not give up 330 yards on the ground or 21 pts in the second quarter and the 5 sacks was no time by a bad blocking and a coaching misjudgment to leave him in late in the game, but by the mid 3rd quarter the mojo of RU had left the building for the entire team which falls on the coach.

Maybe the Mich St or indiana game was Laviano in a nutshell? Regardless, 27 for 42 , 250 yards passing (going off memory) in the rain, no Carroo, on the road with 100k+ fans, is not so bad. Much better stats than Hackenburg that night.
