Bench Clearing Brawl at Montverde/Roselle Cath Game

Leave it to Zags to not be there; have nothing to report on the game and channel his inner Steve Politi and report on a brawl.

And he referred to the players that Montverde Academy had on the court to end the game as scrubs.

They don't have any scrubs, every single one of their players would start at just about any High School in the country.

Jesus I hate Zagoria.

I live near Montverde Academy........top to bottom a good team
but
also well coached......I amazed a brawl would happen...

You could 3 of Montervedes starters for a brawl & they would still clean most teams clocks on the court

I just finished watching this game on tape. A couple of thoughts.

1. Sorry I missed it because after going to the Ranney-Montverde game
on Friday night, I figured the score would be ugly--not the game shenanigans.

2. NJ HS hoops continues to decline; amazing that we have 3 McDonald's invites when none of them would get much time at McEachern, Oak Hill, Montverde, or whichever IMG team they decide to roll-out. Correct me, please @RussWood, but the 3 NJ kids have a lot of hard work ahead of them unless they just wanted the attention, and are already talked about in the recruiting
of transfers world.

3. It's a shame that RC will likely be banned from the playoffs--not for them or the weak coaching that seems to be tolerated there--but for the other schools that would have had a chance to play them . I would contribute to a "go-fund-me" type fundraiser to hire a lawyer for them to get it delayed until April/May time frame. But some kid-lawyer at work today, told me that if the NJSIAA doesn't apply the rule which they used against Patrick school or Hudson Catholic 2-years ago when they had 5+ kids leave the bench area in Florida or California, 4 to 7 schools are ready to take it to court, and then rid the rule this summer.

4. I also watched the Gil St Bernards game 2x, and I looked for the thread about their RU recruit but haven't found it yet. The Bayonne Bleeder, as someone called him 'elite" in December; I recognize the small sample size. But he was completely intimidated or ill or played his worst game in front of the biggest crowd he's likely seen. Too many turnovers, bad handle and vision when pressed, and had 3 airballs in 1st half. I am staying
positive, but if he were to ever get on the court at the RAC, Coach Pike will
have to play zone every minute he is in the game. He played zero defense in the game and after 2 viewings, I think he wasn't able to guard his shadow.

5. Lastly, glutton for punishment that I am + I had a worker I am trying to recruit to move to NYC metro from Atlanta, I went to the Elizabeth game last night. That coach who moved from Linden-- @nights1212, please jump in and educate us-- has Elizabeth playing every possession like it is the last, and has his team undefeated. Hard to think they won't win the TOC --especially if Roselle C. is unsuccessful getting into the playoffs via the legal courts--not the hardwood courts. And they apparently didn't even score as many buckets as that Ranney school did the night before.

Time to not just mourn the loss of NJ #HS football being irrelevant--they have company w/NJ basketball's future becoming irrelevant.

@RUHoopsguard - Unlike the Patrick School scenario, it seems no players were officially ejected from the RC-MV game. I'm not sure of any Hudson Catholic basketball ejection issues - maybe soccer(?).

If there are suspensions after the fact, the NJSIAA would be setting an extremely questionable precedent - one they are likely not equipped to handle the backlash from.

I would offer that organizers of many of these type of tournaments may now brief officials in advance about the gravity of such ejections - unless there is something egregious in the open floor. Something along the lines of: "Don't let this/these players return to the game or else ejections WILL be in order."

(from nj.com - Sorry!)
"NJSIAA assistant director Al Stumpf confirmed to NJ Advance Media that the NJSIAA is reviewing the incident. As of Monday morning, he was still waiting for written reports from Roselle Catholic and the game's officials. He also said that NJSIAA policy states that videos can't be used to decide disciplinary measures after the fact. (e.g. - Patrick School's unsuccessful defense in their appeal of their disqualification)

Roselle Catholic coach Dave Boff would not comment on the incident but stated there were no ejections, even though all of the players from Montverde's bench joined the brawl. The incident took place right in the middle of the Roselle Catholic bench, so determining whether any of Boff's players went out of their way to join the fray may prove difficult.

If there were, in fact, no ejections, it's unclear whether any disciplinary measures may fall on Roselle Catholic. NJSIAA regulations require that any player ejected from a game needs to sit out the following two games. Regulations also state that any team receiving three or more player or coach disqualifications for flagrant unsportsmanlike conduct will not be permitted to participate in the NJSIAA tournament..."

Everyone knows that Phil is a great coach but a lot easier to coach when you can recruit to s public school . He brought in at least three recruits that happen to magically move into Elizabeth . Funny how that works out . I will say he gets the kids to bust their ass abs completely buy in

Is this your take on Mulcahy?

Yes regardless of their addresses----just going back to being the Elizabeth of old.

A little over the top, yes. He did commit a really bad turnover at the end of the game that led to the winning layup by the opponent.

He did slip and fall. But it was a turnover.

Not sure what it is with sneakers these days see a lot more slipping. Caleb for one slips a lot, Corey did last year as well.

RC completely lacks discipline this year. Against camden catholic towards the end of the game their bench players were like hanging out in the stands, it was bizarre.

Roselle Catholic's coach is a great guy who has had extraordinary results at his school, meaning he can't be as bad a coach as some of you couch-bound "coaches" seem to imply.

He also has a very good view of Rutgers, particularly Pikiell, and we're currently recruiting his top junior. Not sure wtf everyone's problem is.

Collichio left Linden after 21 years and is coaching for his good friend, the AD, Ben Candelino. Phil graduated from Elizabeth and they have been trying to get him to return to Elizabeth for many years. Apparently he got a real sweet deal and I think he is some sort of assistant to the athletic director. Elizabeth also got Linden's top assistant (Marty Luc) who was a second grade teacher for many years in Linden. Phil's teams play outstanding defense. They are amazing on defense. Elizabeth is undefeated but they were in the second division of Union County. They have not played Roselle Catholic at all and didn't play top rated teams like Linden did every year. They are ahead of schedule and are probably the best public school in the state already. I would not be surprised if they make it to the finals of the TOC. I knew they would be good but thought they would not be this good until next season. Phil is at the largest school in New Jersey and one of the largest in the nation. With drawing from over 4000 students I believe his team will always be one of the best.

Knights ,
You are right . Phil doesn’t teach at all . Basically making a sweet salary to do nothing but coach . We play down there in the summer league so I hear some stuff about how they are getting “transfers “ and stuff

I think RUhoop has missed the boat completely on Mulcahy. Maybe he should look at last year's game vs. Roselle Catholic with their gigantic front line. He was like a 6'5" guy with 4 much smaller players against Roselle Catholic and Reid, Whitney, Frink and all of their other D-1 players could not stop him. I have seen him play 11 times and have never seen him intimidated. He plays tough all of the time. Yes he slipped at the end of his game this past weekend which led to a winning layup in the last second of the game but one play does not make a career. Paul has played in many big games. He led the victory over Ranney with Lewis and Antoine who are rated the # 13 and # 14 players in the nation. Maybe you should watch some of his other games. Kean was a sellout when he led the victory over Ranney,

And my Tigers are having a mediocre season in the first one under their new coach. Last I checked they were 11-11. That's usually 3 seasons worth of losses for them.

Thanks for all of your corrections above. Never take them personally, because I learn from most of you. Mulcahy had a box-score filled game I went to yesterday afternoon, but what happened to Rutgers Prep and that kid Trae Paterson (sp?). @RussWood, is Rutgers involved? Give that guy a weight room, and a Coach, and he can go back to being one of the top 5 kids that he was in 8th grade. But word yesterday was he might be moving to Elizabeth.
So sorry for typing your name wrong above @knights1212....but Elizabeth/Linden Coach Colicchio and his 2 brothers went to St Marys in Elizabeth, and then went to become Ben Candelino's assistant at EHS. But I defer to your knowledge--maybe I was told incorrectly. Thank you.
