Big Ten acknowledges mistakes in controversial finish to Rutgers’ loss to Ohio State

let’s replay the final six seconds. I’m sure the team will gladly take another trip out to columbus.

What whistle are you referring? When dribbler (#2)went out of bound
Actually your right whistle shouldn’t have blown when Holden went out out of bounds (2.7 seconds). That was just the point where he became an ineligible receiver. The whistle should’ve blown when Holden touched the ball to receive that pass - that was at 1.1 seconds. My bad.

I’m willing to accept that the first blown call (dribbler number one) was your typical missed call. That’s not what the formal apology is for. The replay shows the foot out of bounds by a hair. Those kind of calls go either way all the time.

refs have no accountability. They should have to answer for this and at least make their own statements .
Agree . And if they say hey we missed it . It’s on us. Then we move on.

BIG needs to do better here. They owe it to the players and fans of theirs schools and sports to be transparent. Own it publicly , take whatever actions and move on

Lol Scirotto is one of the dirtiest in the game. He’s not going to own up for shit. You really think he’s going to disclose his action? And while I’m at it, he gets into business with people who run their mouths.

Can’t speak for the other refs in the crew.

I’m sorry but if the response is going to be “the refs can only process so much in a frenzied atmosphere at the end of a game”, then by rule make all game endings reviewable so you never have this situation. That’s their job to process everything and if they can’t, go to the monitor and confirm they didn’t miss something as obvious as a player out of bounds.

FYI. Nothing really new, but at least we're getting apologies. Here's what Pike said: “I spoke to the Big Ten offices and they acknowledged that mistakes were made. We're going to move forward to Seton Hall now.” Folks can put those pitchforks away now - or bring them to the SHU game, just in case.

By the way, I kept seeing people talking about the clock and hadn't had a chance to look at the time elapsed from the missed 2nd Caleb FT being rebounded by OSU to the time when the clock started up and it froze at 5.0 seconds for about 0.7-0.8 seconds. Then if one looks at the winning shot, it was released with 0.6-0.7 seconds left. Would they have waved it off if they had reviewed the clock being started late? Would've been close - and clock issues are reviewable, unlike the OSU player stepping out of bounds before passing the ball to Holden for the winning shot and, of course, Holden voluntarily stepping OOB and then being the first person to touch the ball after being OOB, which is an absolute violation, by rule. Still sucks a day later.

He’s going with the momentum angle. It’s total crap. There was no momentum. He wasn’t preventing himself from getting hurt and he had the ability to go the other way if he wanted. He went out of bounds to give himself the best chance to make a basketball play - the very definition of voluntary in this case.

“There could be anything from a game suspension to a public reprimand..." Wow. wouldn't that be interesting

It's better than nothing, but not a lot better until they make a public statement. I'd love them restarting the game with our ball, 1.2 seconds left up 2, but that would be shocking to see, even though that would be justice.

Someone send this to dumbass KenPom who won't admit the refs got it wrong.

If only we could get a George Brett Pine Tar Game ruling and have last night's game suspended and resumed with our ball out at the 1.2 seconds before we play our Jan 15 rematch game at the RAC.

Maybe the B1G can advise the rules like they did Covid year to allow OSU into playoffs with worse record.. oh nevermind. That's right it's OSU.

Nothing about dribbler stepping out of bounds first:

The Big Ten Conference has reviewed the officiating from The Ohio State University (OSU) and Rutgers University (Rutgers) men’s basketball game on December 9, 2022, at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio.

During regulation play, an OSU student-athlete passed the ball to a teammate who had drifted out of bounds and returned to the court to complete the game-winning shot. The action of stepping out of bounds and being the first player to touch the ball after returning inbounds consisted a violation of NCAA Rule 9, Section 3, Article 1. The play should have been stopped and the ball ruled dead.

The officiating crew that was on the court is one of the best in the country, but unfortunately missed the call. The Big Ten Conference takes officiating very seriously and has addressed the matter with both the member institutions and the officiating crew. Additionally, the conference will be providing added education and rule reinforcement to our basketball officials.
