Big Ten acknowledges mistakes in controversial finish to Rutgers’ loss to Ohio State

Your first reaction in the game thread was to rip people as conspiracy theorists, so forgive some for being touchy. Appreciated the follow-up comments in your thread as I already stated.

Actually because it was literally a few minute after without clear video of the guy bringing the ball up being out. Thats what I specifically addressed.

I addressed the refs horrible call giving the game to Ohio State and still people don't bother to pay attention

Nothing about dribbler stepping out of bounds first:

The Big Ten Conference has reviewed the officiating from The Ohio State University (OSU) and Rutgers University (Rutgers) men’s basketball game on December 9, 2022, at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio.

During regulation play, an OSU student-athlete passed the ball to a teammate who had drifted out of bounds and returned to the court to complete the game-winning shot. The action of stepping out of bounds and being the first player to touch the ball after returning inbounds consisted a violation of NCAA Rule 9, Section 3, Article 1. The play should have been stopped and the ball ruled dead.

The officiating crew that was on the court is one of the best in the country, but unfortunately missed the call. The Big Ten Conference takes officiating very seriously and has addressed the matter with both the member institutions and the officiating crew. Additionally, the conference will be providing added education and rule reinforcement to our basketball officials.

Thats a missed call that happens in games, bad mistake but some could argue Caleb could be called for foul too...not as egregious as the guy who hit the game winner coming from out of bounds. That is a violation that refs blew. The 2nd play is what meeds to be focused on

They won’t reverse it . But they owe the public and the “student athletes” a simple statement that an officiating error impacted the result of the game ….and then some feel good BS about doing better and being committed to the student athletes lol

Wow just wow . Posted this earlier. This is very similar to what the BIG did in fact release !! Plum nails it …again !

Not a grammarian, but their comma use is horrific:

No comma before "at theSchottenstein Center."

Comma does not belong before "but". A comma separates two independent clauses.

Finally, the last sentence :

"Additionally, the conference will be providing added education and rule reinforcement to our basketball officials."

What is meant by "added education and rule enforcement." Assuming added modifies both education and rule enforcement, what is "added rule enforcement."

Embarrassing announcement.

I was Wwrrrrrrrrrr oooo. I can’t say it, my throat hurts. I finally got over the screw job Burr and Higgins gave us at MSG vs StJohns. And now this.

We better get

every

****ing

call

for the rest of the season after this

If only it worked that way.

The way life really works, we’re gonna experience the single most unlucky season long case of badcallitis in the history of sports. We might as well bend over and spread ‘em ‘cause we’re gonna get totally fvcked by the refs all season long.

I’ve already ordered a dozen cases of astroglide. Get yours quick before supplies run out.

I love how they say the OSU player "drifted" out of bounds. No. the guy was parked out of bounds for like 4 seconds

Absolutely agree. -But that sounds better for them than saying, "The OSU student-athlete purposely went out of bounds and was there long enough to order a burger and fries, and then came back onto the court to take an illegal shot that not only shouldn't have counted, but should have never happened since the ball should have been ruled dead. -Oh, and the entire officiating crew missed it all, even though one ref was trailing the play and was virtually even with the OOB OSU player before said player stepped back into the area of play...and yet, the official still missed the ENTIRE FREAKING THING"!

'Ya know how it is. It's the B1G's way of giving it all a "kinder and gentler" vibe.

Is this a good lube for buttocks? Will remember to grab some. Go RU!

Wouldn’t be surprised if this moment makes them consider making a change to the rulebook

Just like the Rutgers -WVU game in 2006, we get screwed by a no rule in the rule book, and us getting screed over big time gets the rule changed .

Sone consolation ….please pass me the barf bag , immediately …..

Yeah - fair enough. Replay was needed to see that this was way different than your typical “missed call”. It was an actual error - no debate to be had (it wasn’t questionable whether he stepped out nor is it debatable that he went out because of momentum - KenPom can take a hike on that one).

This is beyond rough though because - 1) the open look itself was only made possible by the player commiting the violation. 2) we had the lead - it wasn’t like a call in our favor was just going to give us a chance to come back. calling Caleb for that foul still only puts a frosh (albeit a good FT shooter but so is Caleb) on the line to have to ice 2 FTs to tie and then gives RU the ball back with 3 seconds to play in regulation. 3) the 16 second replay clip of the last possession verifies that Thorton stepped out too (granted a much closer missed call) and 4) that same replay clip also confirms that the 5 second game clock did not start until after the rebounder not only had secured the ball but after his pass was received by another OSU player. That’s a reviewable play and it wasn’t even looked at. Folks saying that a buffer should be included for human reaction are just flat out wrong. With 5 seconds remaining on the clock - an extra second is 20% of the total time remaining and in this case the difference between getting the shot off or not.

If only we could get a George Brett Pine Tar Game ruling and have last night's game suspended and resumed with our ball out at the 1.2 seconds before we play our Jan 15 rematch game at the RAC.

We sat behind Brett and Lasorda about eight years later at a Yankee game. I was dying to ask him about the Pine Tar, but didn't want to get tossed. Ken was the perfect gentleman, but Tommy hammed it up with the adjacent fans a few times, which was even better.

Good point on the clock, it did not start until the second player touched it. Not sure, does time start when the ball hits the rim or when a player touches it? If rim then this could have been the difference in getting it off on time as it hits the rim a second time, quick rebound and quick pass - is that .6 seconds? Very annoying to look at the replay and also notice the kid out of bounds traveled half way through the red area, all through the white area and then comes back in bounds beyond the white area, so it is not as he inadvertently stepped out and came right back in. He went a good ten feet closer to the basket out of bounds.

Final play recap - Homers start clock late, ballhandler fouls with his left hand push off, steps out of bounds, takes five steps, passes to a guy who ran ten feet out of bounds and refs don't see a violation anywhere.

Good thing is the NCAA selection committee will be made well aware of this if we are sitting on the bubble Selection Sunday.

Sh*tty thing is OSU gets a wrongful two game bump vs. us in the league standings.

Lol Scirotto is one of the dirtiest in the game. He’s not going to own up for shit. You really think he’s going to disclose his action? And while I’m at it, he gets into business with people who run their mouths.

Can’t speak for the other refs in the crew.

Does this mean the “fans” blaming Coach Pikiell for not physically confronting the referees as they walked off the court will apologize?

Need to ensure if any of these refs officiate at RU they get booed the entire game.

There was accountability. B1G acknowledged the mistake and called out the officials.

It stinks what happened, but it is time to get over it and move on.
not if nothing happens to them. Also the refs should have to make a statement as well and apologize; not just hide behind a league statement

Replay the goddamn last 2 seconds. NBA has done this before. It’s the right thing to do.
I thought I'd get over this screw job but the more I see it the more po'd I get. This is exactly what should be done...take the W/L of the books and before our Jan 15 game here replay the last ~1.5 seconds with RU up by 2 and inbounding the ball. Won't happen of course because, you know, tOSU...
