Boyle is interesting if Lonergan quality isn't available

I'm a long time season ticket holder, 30 Years plus If they hire this clown I'm done. He's a HIGH SCHOOL coach. Mid-majors haven't even gone after him.

You don't think he hasn't turned down tons of jobs at the college level, including head coach opportunities at small schools?

We need Low risk High Reward! None on this thread except for the GW coach meet that criteria. Spend the money. We cannot afford ($$) another failure. Someone should do a study on how, financially, we have done going on the cheap. The ROI must be negative.

Based on the offer to Hurley, we are not looking to go on the cheap.

I am not sure if the offer was 1.5MM or 2MM. 1.5MM might be appropriate for Hurley. We will probably need to pay more that we are used to given the massive mistakes that have been made.

Boyle is far and away the candidate most likely to be stolen from us in 4 years. This is similar to Ash IMO and a very good thing.

He must have good contacts overseas also. He was always good for recruiting some big men from outside the US whenever he needed to stock his team's at St. Pats. Herve Lamizana and Samuel Dalembert are just two examples. I'm sure that's continued at his current job also. Simmons is Australian for one.

Scott Goodall was hired from Jackson HS, and has turned Rutgers Wrestling into a national power.

I am warming up to Boyle, so my response is not coming from an "anit-Boyle" place..but I dont think you can compare Wrestling to Mens Bball...the profile/risk/scale is very different

Now, IMO, Boyle has played and succeeded at a level that is super high for HS...so if there's a HS candidate who can successfully make the transition, he probably is a good choice.

but, if it was another HS coach, I wouldnt necessarily support the move...which is why I dont think the comparison works unless you are equating Goodale to Boyle...

and if you are, i guess this entire post is a waste...lol...

Low risk high reward means our fanbase has to donate, which they don't want to do.

How different are NJ high school rules vs the college game? I know the NBA is nothing like NCAA in many ways but don't know the high school rules. Shot clock? Fouls and timeouts? You are still developing talent in all areas in college, so that is similar. Travel is obviously more of a factor. Recruiting is a big one. It is definitely an outside the box idea.

Has any high school coach ever been successful making the jump to a mid major or better program?

I like Kevin a lot but we'd be taking a huge risk hiring him.

If it gets down to Cluess, I'd rather take a chance on Boyle.

Yes yes a million times over. Boyle has the energy, connections, drive, and personality to excite the NJ recruits & players. No college experience is a big risk, but considering the other candidates being discussed - I would be more confident in Boyle bringing in talent than Clueless.

I agree that half the battle is bringing talent. Boyle would most likely provide that and if he can even half way coach that talent we will be in a great place. If not its basically another FHJ.

If we hire a high school coach (not to mention this one in particular) we should drop basketball. Hobbs may not end up with an exciting hire but he's not that stupid.

Of all the reasons over the last 25 years of putrid BBall, scandals, and general ineptitude, I don't think the mere prospect of hiring a HS coach who can recruit and coach would be the defining reason for shutting it all down. We are rock bottom now - things can only get better.

jlariv9 - I generally agree...but we said that before hiring Eddie...and we then proceeded to redefine rockbottom

so it can get worse...but I agree it would be really really hard.

As someone alluded to in another thread, today would have been the day to announce hiring Boyle if he were

Agreed! Things are so bad right now, I don't see how any of the "top 3 choices" will be able to do much more than improve us to any more than middle of the road to mediocre. That just isn't good enough. I hope they take a chance on someone like Boyle. There is so much more potential upside, and we can't get any worse.

We can always get worse. We've been saying we've hit rock bottom for over 20 years and we keep lowering the bar.

Boyle with a vet staff would be great or vise versa with boyle as top assistant
Recruiting should be more than 50 % of a coaching staffs time .I would pay Boyle double his current salary to be the top recruiting assistant regardless who is hired as head coach.Rutgers must think differently and not just allow a new head coach to bring in some of his current assistant coaches who don't have a proven record of recruiting top tier recruits which Boyle has shown in high school.Following the same old strategy of hiring coaches has failed miserably at Rutgers.Yes,there are risks in such a approach but to me its worth the attempt just to break the cycle of futility surrounding the program.

I would not be surprised at all if this is what Hobbs was thinking by contacting Boyle in the first place.
