"You know what I think would be great for Jersey basketball? Why don't we get a $50 million god darn arena? How's that?'' Stringer said. "That's what I think would be real great. Because you try recruiting to this. Have you gone to the other facilities? Come on, people. Let's get involved in the things we need to do.

"And I'll play everybody, anybody, whenever they get ready. I need a facility so that we can attract the same kinds of kids that everybody else does. I'm sitting up here and I walk into that facility at Ohio State - are you kidding me? It's the most incredible thing there is.

"We gotta do more than just talking. We gotta do something about this. NJIT, how much are they spending on a facility? Please.''

C. Vivian Stringer explodes on need to upgrade

Good to see CVS making a case for the need to upgrade BB facilities.
I think we'll be hearing more on that subject from her the next two years in order to make it easier
for the next RU WBB HC to recruit.

My opinion is after 2 years of her current contract Stringer might look to retire .
I think that's why she allowed the last two years of her contract not to be guaranteed .
She'll get with Hermann and decide what's best for the program and then return for 3rd year or retire .
Just an opinion, nothing else !

Good for C. Viv. It's about time someone of her stature blasts the provincial-thinking Barchi and the BOG. Borrow the money NOW while it's cheap instead of waiting six years.

I am so, so very proud of her. You go Coach Stringer!

It touches themes that I have wanted to drill into some of the naysayers on this board, by the way - how long can CVS recruit on her name alone? And as she said several years ago, yes, we have talent, but compare us to "x".

That said, I don't think anyone that matters cares one iota what she thinks. And I hope it doesn't get her fired. For telling the truth.

Perhaps they can build a nice, large arena, using corporate investors, bonds, etc. for funding. There was talk a few years ago about something (public/municipal non-Rutgers) in New Brunswick.

If it is used by Rutgers, Seton Hall, Princeton men's and women's teams, Rutgers wrestling, high school basketball tournaments, the state high school wrestling championship, concerts, and BIG and NCAA tournaments it could justify the project. Just a thought.

That article was pretty much amazing.

I too have wondered why Rutgers hasn't been aggressive with building new athletic facilities since it was first voted into the B1G. Even if you do not have the big bucks rolling in right now, they will be here sooner rather than later. Take out a bond and get this done. Stringer mentioned being embarrassed for her players when they walk into facilities at Ohio State, Maryland, etc. That works both ways. I'm sure players from other teams are sad and embarrassed when they walk into the RAC and see what Rutgers players have to play in day after day.

Rutgers was voted into the B1G almost 2.5 years ago and has been in the conference for almost 1 year. There haven't even been announced plans for new construction, even if the construction itself wouldn't start for a few years. Time to start acting like a B1G team.

Even little old Louisville built amazing facilities and they were on a shoe string Conference USA budget for years.

Unlike Maryland, Rutgers is still being paid like a Big east/AAC team. Rutgers will not be earning equivalent payments from the Big 10 until ~2020, so coming here and expecting Rutgers to start spending like OSU/UMich/Etc.. right away is disingenuous IMHO.

As it stands, Rutgers University provides more direct financial support to its athletics department than any other school in the country (well over $20 million per year, but there have been years where it was above $30 million). UNlike most schools, Rutgers University paid nearly 100% of its stadium renovation/expansion via bonds (rather than via donations or sponsorships).

Unfortunately we are dealing with the impact of that borrowing even today. Even though Rutgers just had its best attendance year ever in football (and one of its best years ever for donations)...there is virtually no more "profit" than before the expansion because the cost to repay the bonds offsets the extra donations and ticket sales. If the football expansion had even been 25% paid for by donations, the school would be so much better off today. The problem is our alums/fans/donors simply have it in their heads that "someone else" should be paying for these things, when it is really up to us.

Personally I would love for the State of NJ to kick in some funds, but I don't hold out much hope for that. While the citizens of NJ are among the wealthiest in the country (and the world), the government itself is practically bankrupt (despite some of the highest tax rates in the country) so I don't see them helping out at all. If anything, over the last few years the State of NJ has been fighting against RU. For examples, when the State disbanded UMDNJ and asked Rutgers to absorb its medical schools, the State outright rejected the notion that they should help fund any of the merger costs and vocally demanded that Rutgers pay for it, while also demanding that tuition not be raised and also demanding that no layoffs take place. At the same time, the state decided that Rowan, which only had to take over the School of Osteopathic Medicine, would be given a one time allocation of $10 million to fund their immediate merger costs. Since the UMDNJ merger, the state legislature (including Lesniak) has continuously tried to "pack" the Board of Governors and even tried to outright ban the Rutgers Board of Trustees.

These same lawmakers (Lesniak and Cody) are now criticizing Rutgers because of the lack of BB facilities...but don't fool yourself in to thinking they are thinking of the welfare of the student athletes. To them, it is just another avenue to criticize Rutgers. Criticizing Rutgers seems to get votes in NJ. Funding Rutgers does NOT seem to get votes, though, so that won't be happening (we had our state funding cut (again) this year).

That's why I said pay for it with bonds. The money is coming sooner rather than later.

I am still waiting from somebody within the Rutgers administration to come forth with a plan of action to upgrade athletic facilities with particular emphasis on basketball.Time frames and source of funding must be included. The silence is deafening which is probably the reason why Lesniak and Stringer are so vocal.

While major union contracts are outstanding, I don't see RU leadership proposing major athletic expenditures. It would look very bad to talk about pouring a lot of resources into sports facilities while pleading poor in negotiating with unions that represent clerical workers and administrative workers.

again, i will say this to all the arena/facility blowhards...WHERE IS THE MONEY COMING FROM????
