Carino: Brandin Knight an option for RU

Sounds good let's make it so. Can't bring over an all Stonybrook staff or this thing may not get off the ground. Need a couple big time recruiters and names on the staff.

The article is certainly a positive piece of news on several important levels -

(1.) Assuming Pikiell & Knight feel the chemistry & connect - it is a very good idea -

(2.) Anytime a legitimate commentator strongly presents a scenario like this - is great!

(3.) When the possibilities begin with Donyell Marshall and then Brandin Knight is added to the list, the idea that this just might be a great place for a rising coach to consider gets even stronger..... oh ... and recruits pay some attention to things like this too....!

This would be a good move for Brandin Knight. #1 asst at RU or #2 at Pitt. The ceiling is so much lower at RU that if he is around for a couple seasons and all he needs to do is get is for RU to have NITesque seasons that will be a huge feather in his resume and vaulting him into a HC consideration at more major jobs for turning around RU around instead of the much higher expectations at Pitt where you are expected to make the tourney on annual basis.

great move..hopefully we can get a donor to sweeten the offer to a point Knight comes to RU..would soften the blow if we dont keep Shoes.

Being on a staff that gets to the NIT isn't going to vault you into contention for your first HC job.

Getting Knight here IMO is going to be difficult--------he's been at Pitt awhile and he's likely dug in and as you say they usually have a pretty good team with a good chance for the NCAA.

RU can't offer that.

Who has Brandin Knight recruited to Pitt that would make him a grand slam hire?

I know he is from NJ, but why do we think he is a good fit for RU as top recruiter?

Serious questions BTW.

I believe Knight was involved with the NJ kids like Ashton Gibbs, Isiah Epps, Mike Young, John Johnson, etc.

Here is a list of Knight's recruits from 2 years ago based off of a Pitt blog (I'm not sure how accurate this is, and how much Knight assisted with Dixon's recruits):

http://panthersprey.blogspot.com/2014/04/who-each-pitt-assistant-basketball.html

I was going to mention Knight as a possible assistant a while back when the coaching search was going on. However, when I looked at his recruiting track record at Pitt it was not great. For some reason I always thought he was a big time recruiter, and brought in a lot of their star players.

I still think it would be a really good hire, just might not be a slam dunk.

While not impossible, seems unlikely that Knight will be staying - or staying long at Pitt.
Knight was the right-hand man under former coach Jamie Dixon.
Knight was in in the running for the spot vacated by Dixon
Stallings of Vanderbilt gets the HC spot - and not Knight
Stallings select his longtime Vanderbilt assistant Tom Richardson as #1 assistant
Knight has opportunity to stay - but will clearly be the #2 assistant.

- - what is going on at Pitt smells a bit like money driven maneuvering / game of chicken - and it probably has everything to do with how much Knight is making and how his contract is written - odds are that Stalling would be totally delighted if Knight left - few people are thrilled with the prospect of having their predecessor's right-hand-man (who was also a candidate for the job) sticking around.... but it might cost a lot of $$$ to show them to the door.
It would be totally amazing if Knight wasn't a bit dismayed with his overall situation at Pitt right now - one moment you are in contention for HC - the next you are dropped from "right-hand' to 2nd assistant..... if great things happen at Pitt next year - the credit goes to Stallings & Richardson ... and it would be unlikely that Knight gets much praise - no matter what he does.

You would think that Knight would move with Dixon which I expected to happen after he didn't get the job at Pitt.

Wow. Tell me what needs to happen for this to come true. I will go door to door asking for donations if its about the money...

The assistant coach going to RU might have the easiest path to a P5 job. Let's be honest....if things get turned around Pikiel probably has a great job waiting for him AND the top assistant most likely becomes RUs new head coach.

It isn't exactly easy given the fact that building program will be very hard and odds aren't in any coach's favor.

Brandin Knight going to Texas or Dallas Ft. Worth isn't going to maximize his value for recruiting the Northeast, there is more than enough talent in Texas for Dixon to assemble a staff of folks that can maximize recruiting that territory....Knight's value is with a NE based program that is familiar or capable or recruiting the area he is most familiar with and that's obviously NJ.

Regarding the thoughts that Knight would "replace" Shoes, why don't we actually consider hiring Knight and retaining Shoes and getting as many recruiting people that can sell RU, out on the road and recruiting the tristate area and beyond?? I keep seeing this mindset that "it's one or the other", we need the best staff possible, period....

I would like to think that if we paid Pikiell $1.6M per year, getting Knight interested should be within our financial reach. It would make sense that we can significantly upgrade his pay at RU and why stick around Pitt???....you can retain Shoes as a decent number and groom one of the Stony Brook assistants to be available as well.

A staff of Jay Young, Knight, Shoes ,with Doughty as DOBO would be pretty impressive on paper. You can create a Senior Advisory position for Dan Rickard, where he is able to travel with the team, instruct/teach and help with practices.....And you can certainly argue that if we reshuffled and found room for Mike O'Koren as a senior advisory person that we could so for Rickard.....if Knight blows up in a year and becomes a HC somewhere else, you have depth on the bench of assistants to reshuffle and move up.

Does Shoes share Pikiell's vision?

Sorry, but we won ONE B1G game last year vs. a team decimated. Why don't we want to wipe the slate clean?

I pay little attention to recruiting but those more in the know have always been excited in the past about Knight as an assistant whenever his name gets brought up so it's good with me. Besides if you weren't too excited about him then what other names out there are more "exciting" than his for this area and are realistic gets.

I would sign up for that!!! I also believe we need to retain Shoes while still hiring a #1 type recruiter out there. Let's face it, the most talented pieces (Sanders, Laurent, Freeman, Thiam) were as a result of Shoes.

This nonsense about cleaning house completely because we have 1 B1G win last year is exactly that...nonsense. Shoes has value.

Does this actually have legs or is someone using the nj media for a better look by another party. The leaks haven't been coming from our side of late so I'm skeptical. That said I'd love it if it were true

Knight you shafted us twice and we forgive you, do not make it a third

Your not getting Knight as anything then a one. I don't think you get him and Young.

You would think that Knight would move with Dixon which I expected to happen after he didn't get the job at Pitt.

Yeah, but then he'd have to live in TX, and Fort Worth ain't Austin.

I think it would be uncomfortable for both him and Stallings to have Knight stay on in a demoted situation. I'd love to see him come to the Banks.

Do not know if it has legs as far as the possible move to Rutgers
- but logic would lean toward Knight definitely making a move - if a decent opportunity presents - in an area where his experience would be an asset.
To be blunt - there is no long term bright career future for Knight at Pitt - other than maybe being a 'member of the coaching staff' ... there is a 'job' and a paycheck - (for as long as his contract runs) Knight can take a bit of time & try to optimize his options - but his future lies somewhere outside of Allegheny County.

Sanders and Freeman both suspended, Thiam hasn't played, and I like Laurent. I want to know the strategy for building a roster on a winning team. Does shoes fit that? Can he evaluate talent? Does he offer anything as a coach?

Yes Sanders and Freeman are talented.....when we had a chance of getting wins on our B1G schedule Sanders and Freeman were suspended.

Let me add.....we had 4 open spots and what did Shoes get us....NOTHING. In the early signing period where must kids sign we had a GOOSE EGG.

So what if they were suspended last year. Sanders and Freeman both need to stay in order to avoid another season like last year.

Wrong, Shoes got us Thiam. I could care less if he landed Thiam in the Fall or Spring...point is he landed him and he is a legit B1G talent.

I guess the new philosophy is to judge recruiters by the time frame when they land the talent....lol...this board amuses me sometimes.

1. He isn't signed yet
2. why wasn't he signed in the spring by RU or anyone else?

Laurent commits in April, Thiam February, Freeman is a JUCO, and Sanders. Without being too disrespectful it sounds like he gets whatever is left over.

Sanders committed way ahead of time.

Lol, if you think those four players are "leftovers". Marques Bolden is a leftover too, right, because he is signing in the Spring.

FIG, EJ is gone, you can put your agenda back on the shelf
