Carino: Brandin Knight an option for RU

Thiam is guaranteed to sign if Shoes stays on board. If Shoes is gone, Thiam is gone. Recruiting is often more about the "ties" than the actual school.

Sanders committed way ahead of time.

Lol, if you think those four players are "leftovers". Marques Bolden is a leftover too, right, because he is signing in the Spring.

FIG, EJ is gone, you can put your agenda back on the shelf

Agenda? I want to see us succeed. I think our best chance of success is a fresh start. Cutting as many ties from the past and starting new is, in my opinion, the best way to do it.

So then are you okay with losing half our team next year and all of the good pieces? Are you okay with 6 total wins next year. I'm not. That's what will happen.

Absolutely....build it right. We had only 1 B1G win last year.

Take a look at Shoes past. Yes I am naive, but he isn't the type of guy i feel comfortable with....especially when a player demands he stays on.

We have a chance to win some games next year if the core pieces stay on. I'm willing to do what it takes to keep those pieces on board. You think we are the first school ever to have players follow a certain recruiter? Come on now.

And yes, it's players int he plural. It's not just about keeping Sanders on board.

We get it, you dislike Sanders.

It's not about winning some games next year. It is about building a winning program.
I thing every past head coach came with the intention to build a winning program. They all failed because of scandals and or failure to recruit talent comparable to Big East, AAC and B1G opposition. There is nothing wrong bringing in or retaining a assistant coach that can bring in or retain top tier talent which Rutgers has been lacking for decades,Fans are tired of watching a losing program and seeing the can kicked down the road another 4 years until the next new hire.

Personally could care less about the demands of one individual player. I'm all for cleaning house of this utterly disastrous program and letting the new coach make his personnel decisions without restrictions or qualifications. If he wants to keep someone great - if not, we move on, and deal with the ramifications. My two cents.

Kyle Flood.....

Failure for the Jordan regime was taking shortcuts and not working hard.

Keeping Shoes seems like a combination of 1 and 2.

Being on a staff that gets to the NIT isn't going to vault you into contention for your first HC job.

Getting Knight here IMO is going to be difficult--------he's been at Pitt awhile and he's likely dug in and as you say they usually have a pretty good team with a good chance for the NCAA.

RU can't offer that.
If it's RU , you could be wrong about an NIT invitation being a springboard to a HCing position.
Getting him to come to RU will be hard, but not impossible.
Also being passed over for the Pitt job might have him looking around more than being dug in.
Pitt with a new HC in charge might not seem as comfortable as before and he might look for a better fit .

That doesn't work with a limited budget .Hiring at least 2 Stony Brook assistant coaches proves the point.

A head coach always brings a couple of assistants with him when he gets a new head coaching job. This is nothing new. It happens in every program across the country. You bring in guys that know your system and how you like to run things.

Heard somewhere the Gmen had Giants as a Tier 2 or the like team.

Complaining about suspensions? As long as it's not a problem with guns or domestic violence there is no issue. Coming from the guys who's moniker is full of weed suspensions if I recall correctly (I don't remember, really).

sorry..while you may feel uncomfortable ,thats they way College basketball is run nowadays. In past Coach K said he would never take one and done players..whats he doing now to compete? taking one and dones.

Nobody is saying he is a recruiting god. Retaining Shoes will ensure that the core pieces are retained. That's all anybody is saying. Go re-read the thread.

This time around doesn't have to follow every other regime change in the last 15 years which has resulted in mass exodus and a complete build. Why set ourselves back 5 years when maybe we can keep the core intact and get to the same place in 2-3 years.

PS: If that one player was Larry Bird, I'm all ears. I love Larry Bird. :sunglasses:

Really? And how is that going so far? We going to continue to fill this staff with assistants from Stony Brook?

I'm slowly becoming convinced that you have some kind of serious connection to Shoes, which is fine, but man you kiss this guy's ass as if he were the greatest recruiter to ever hit the the college basketball scene.

BTW - the Stony Brook staff coached in the NCAA tournament this year, nobody on the Rutgers staff did, let's not forget that little fact.

The Stony Brook staff would not even come close to cutting in the B1G. Terrible argument. We are in a world of trouble if we are just going to bring over the Stony Brook staff.

I can't say Shoes is a great recruiter, because I feel a better program would have poached him or one that was trying to improve their recruiting if he is a good as some claim he is.
But until Pikiell hires someone whose supposed to be a top recruiter, I'll say don't be so quick to want Shoes gone
RU MBB has a talent gap with the better B1G programs, but that doesn't mean Vetrone was/is the problem.
RU has had the same talent gap it has now in the B1G in the BE and AAC the conferences it was in before .
Recruiting has been a problem for RU MBB for a long long time and Greg (Shoes) Vetrone's
recruiting might be missed if Rutgers dumps him and doesn't bring in someone who can recruit the talent Pikiell needs make RU MBB a winner

I understand the logic about bringing former assistant coaches to your new school. The problem is Rutgers plays in a power conference requiring far better players than recruited at Stony Brook.Knight is the type coach that is perceived as a higher tier assistant that could attract better talent which Rutgers desperately needs.

Our old staff didn't come close to cutting it in the B1G for 3 years, so if thats what Pikiell wants, i guess it's worth a shot, no?

Madhat

I doubt it----nobody cares about the NIT.

Now if they get to the CIT then you're talking ! :):):)

lol okay...way to answer my question, btw.

So, let's just sit back and wait for the recruits to come knocking on our door. We don't need a shmoozer. We don't want a recruit who wants to be convinced to come here. We only take guys that;ll kiss our butt. And while we're at it, let's not keep any players that don't bow down and pay homage to RU. If they have any complaints or concerns about who is part of the management of the program.....f 'em.

I'm sure if the coaches just sit int the RAC benches and wait, the 5* recruits will be knocking the doors down.

and yet the Jordan staff for 3 years was not cutting the mustard in any way shape or from yet you rallied around them

So bac, where are those 4 star recruits you thought were coming here with a new coach? What are your rhoughts on Bullock who wasnt even in the rivals database?

There is no need to "clean house" like there was in football. The bball program just can't win games, but it was not toxic like the FB program had become.

If we let Sanders, Laurent et al just walk, we are shackling Pike with an empty roster, and it will be nearly impossible for him to get to any postseason in 5 years, let alone 3 years.

We need to keep the core talent so that Pike can add to it and hope to reach the NIT within 2 years. That's the springboard to future NCAA bids, not cleaning house for the sake of simply having a clean slate.

Who is "we"? This is all on Pikiell..

If he feels we should clean house, go for it. If that means sanders leaves, we'll then good riddance. Not a team guy.

Going from 7 wins to NIT eligibility will make Pikiell's top assistant's resume look pretty good when interviewing for HC position outside of a down on their luck major program .
Add in his time at Pitt and Knight might just benefit from RU's NIT season , if it happens quickly.

Of course you're right about RU making the CIT.
If that happened with Brandin the top assistant, Duke fans would be clamoring for a new Coach K.
[roll][winking]

Pike's thinking may be that his staff brought in good players (including a very good one) to a minor league so they probably can bring in very good players (including a great one?) to a major league.
