Carino: Pikiell says, "I'm the right coach."

I mean, we have beaten ranked teams in consecutive years and competed against Mich St and Wisky (this year) and Purdue (last year). You don't just go from bad times to amazing success. There will be highs and lows. Everyone just need to relax after a loss to a superior team. And we were without a huge piece.

Let's see how we look hosting NW and 'Braska and going to State College.

Pikiell has to get back to his values.

Little communication on transition defense last night. People left open all over the place. Even with out Omoruyi, the team is not 40+ better than Rutgers.

Pikiell has to continue to get creative on offense, and make sure his guards know the bigs need the ball. I like McConnell backing down into the paint. I would like to see Harper Jr drive more and draw fouls.

There are options. The team is better than they appeared last night. It was a bad loss, but Rutgers will still pull together more good games, and make the RAC rock.

I look forward to Friday.

this team is still missing some moving parts especially with the injuries.
One thing for sure is you never know what to expect.

Pike had 3 ugly years at Stony Brook before 16-14 Year 4. Then 6 of the next 7 seasons had 22 wins or more.
Maybe we should be patient with him and hope for similar results. The guy has to undo the damage of naked free throws, Mike rice and tons of losing seasons. I don’t think there was a worse job to take of the major conferences based on a school’s past 25-year history than Rutgers. He’s gonna turn it around. But to turn around a program that was this poor of a trajectory needs more time.

The only worse P6 job to me is Washington State... their program has had about as much institutional support as ours and has the added challenge of being in the middle of nowhere away from any basketball-rich recruiting areas while a more established state school is in Seattle. And they're in a worse conference. The only guy who succeeded there is Tony Bennett, one of the top 3 coaches in the sport.

All I know is that there has been no sense of urgency regarding the mens basketball program.Decades of futility have been largely ignored with the emphasis placed on football and joining the B1G.

Coaches and players have come and gone but the results have remained the same. The inability to recruit and keep shooters /scorers has been the downfall of the mens basketball program.

The history of the futility makes it really tough to recruit.... especially in keeping elite Jersey recruits to come here. In all fairness, Pike has an uphill battle. Simply, we need better players who stick around to become standout upperclassmen. Shag being our only senior is not good at all. Like Jerry said at CC meeting, it took Williard needed 6 years to turnaround SHU. Patience is tested when we get romped but we need the continuity and allow Pike and hit and miss on recruits and eventually get this program where it needs to be. I agree with coach... he is the right coach for the job and patience is a virtue!

True, but Pike did excel against his peer schools at Stonybrook. But, even there it took 4+ years to achieve success.

Maybe my post isn't fair. 2 things to consider
1. Getting the major conference player to play hard is not the same as a low conference school
2. Recruiting success at low conference school doesn't translate at all to a major school

Succeeding at Stony Brook does take X and Os and the ability to lead a complex organization (not as complex as major conference). These things are very important.

I have been criticizing Pike's recruiting, but I think he is the right guy and am extremely happy he is our coach. I am very patient. I just think at times people are overestimating the pieces we have and potentially the pieces that are coming. Some see the light at the end of the tunnel, I am struggling to even see a dim light. I don't think we are stopped though.

We’re one of the youngest teams in the country. The ups and downs aren’t surprising.

More concerning and prohibitive of us reaching our potential is the lack of a legit scorer who can be relied upon for high teens of offensive production every game. One will have to emerge for us to become a serious competitor in the B1G. I’m not convinced that Gio will ever get there. Mathis has a lot of potential but has a lot of work to do on his outside shooting. In other words, we need the players we have to develop and mature, and we need to bring in a steady stream of more good players.

A fair assessment. Given our history and the conference we now play in, Pike's job is a very difficult one, to say the least. Patience is the right approach.
