If Pikiell gets fired, Schiano should go with him

Am I the only one that realizes - you can't completely count Pike out? Like he could legit turn this around, and this season ends in satisfying fashion

But on the other end. We can ALWAYS count Schiano out. Like your expectations for him should ALWAYS be low. Whether it's the big east, Tampa, a stacked squad Ohio St squad, Rutgers again. Schiano will always be lackluster - one good season his whole coaching career. Even that one good season, was against a cake schedule - and he still failed at the end -- losing to a freshman back up QB.

I agree with the first, disagree with the second. My point is that expectations for Pike are higher - but part of that is that he’s done so well. Greg is doing a great job.

we’ve never comfortably made the tournament under pike, never gotten to the second weekend. best outcome in his 8 years is an appearance in the round of 32. we’ve had as many seasons where we stumbled at the end and missed the tournament as we’ve had seasons making the tournament. i’m disregarding the comparison to schiano because i don’t care about that. i’m just sick of some fans’ blind loyalty to pike when he’s done very little to deserve it.

I like Pike as a coach. But maybe don’t put yourself in a hole by losing to Q3/Q4 opponents every year. Let’s try that, for once!!

I don’t recall any of those guys being that highly ranked as recruits but I could be wrong.
Okay, I found the team rankings on Rivals. He is right that class was #28.

RHJ was 4-star, #136
Mathis was 4-star, #108
Carter and McConnell were 3-stars

Other Pike recruiting classes according to Rivals:
2019 #71
2020 #20
2021 #70
2022 #48
2023 #27
2024 #2
2025 (currently) #34

Wow. You can debate a lot about the two of them but the 2025 outlook for football sure looks brighter than for basketball. I’m not sure how anyone could argue otherwise.

Is the 2025 outlook any better than 6-6/7-5 and a third tier bowl game?

No one can count on returners anymore, but assuming no departures, Pike still will have a squad with 3 4*s (5,4,2), a bunch of returning talent and minutes/money to offer in the portal.

Pike deserves credit for bringing us back from nowhere to decency and, now, mediocrity. I think if we don't make the tournament this year (extremely unlikely the way things are looking), he has one year left to do it. Maybe NIL is a part of the problem--we have enough $ for 2 guys and no one else. Maybe some players don't like Pike that much? A lot of people who were decent, but not great, have repeatedly left for other colleges, not the pros. And most of the people we brought in this year--generally slow, minor conference guys trying their best--haven't shown themselves capable of B1G basketball.

Schiano is a mediocre game-day coach (the Illinois game still pisses me off, and the bowl game wasn't much better), but he appears to inspire loyalty from a lot of players, which is very significant. We could have done better this year, but we also were fortunate to get wins against Virginia Tech and Washington, so it probably evens out overall. If we go 7-5 next year, it will be a good year (losses to PSU, tOSU, Oregon and 2 of 4 from IA, MN, WA, IL). Time will tell.

2010 had mitigating circumstances. Not an excuse but it had an effect on the whole team including the coaches.
ok so clearly you’ll relent on nothing. Gotcha.

Just for good measure — we lost to a 4-8 Tulane team at home in 2010 while we had an nfl wide receiver and 4 star QB.

Let’s hear how good that squad was.

The 2010 team had a death struggle with FIU and lost to Tulane before any of the mitigating circumstances.

2010 team sucked. But may have finished a little better if not for the terrible situation.
2010 was a bad team to begin with but it should be pointed out pre NIL and pre portal stuff like that was common for teams, especially when you whiff on the O Line. Is it acceptable? No, but not uncommon. What we’re seeing now with basketball is the culmination of abysmal recruiting for three years and whiffing in the portal. It shouldn’t happen when you have DH and Ace on the team. We look like we don’t have a plan

He is 54th out of 59 offensive rating in B1G. There are only 5 players, using that metric, he is better than. That is just offense. Outside of rebounding, which is very important, he has been bad defensively.

....and he puts 2 good offensively rated games up and we win.

Although he still has has a bunch of defensive breakdowns he has been way more active and has been a much better overall defender.
