Changing of the Guard

With Ash burning Oden's redshirt I don't think Laviano is long for the position. He's simply doesn't fit this offense. I can see Gio becoming the #1 and Oden as the #2 THIS season. I think it's just a matter of time. CL is not the future.

GO RU
While I can def see Gio becomming the starter, after listening to DM's presser today, it looks like Oden is a long way from ready in terms of passing.

Yep that's the plan.

For Laviano to have 137 yards passing when scoring 52 points ... It's almost unbelievable. Change needs to be made asap.

Oden's Redshirt has NOT been Burned. He could develope a minor injury in the next few weeks, and he could still be redshirted. Coaches have big decisions to make.

We saw Gio for 1 nice running play, and Oden for multiple running plays....but how good are they at passing?

Not true, his redshirt has been BURNED.

If he doesn't play more than a 1/4 of the season (3 to 4 games) then he can get a medical redshirt provided he is injured.

Well...his "redshirt" absolutely has been burned. The moment you step on the field you lose that. Now, he can apply for a medical redshirt, true, but that doesn't take place until after half the season has been played - overall - and he can't appear in more than 3 games or 30% of the season. That being said this surely doesn't appear to be a scenario where a "fake" injury is going to pop up.

Based on what? Not having him pass the ball up 49-14 with less than 3-minutes to go against a D that had lost at least 3 starters during the game? Com'on man there's no way in hell he should have been attempting passes today. It'll come.

Oden needs to develop. That's clear. It's also clear is going to develop while playing. How much is the only question. I think he starts the Illinois game. He is the only QB we have that has the natural skills for this offense.

Ash is so refreshing. Flood would have that kid red shirting with no questions. It's nice to see a coach with some b@lls.

It doesn't matter if they burned Tylin's redshirt or not...Gio is going to be # 1 soon...Laviano will move to # 2 ...Tylin at # 3 ...Ash will be able to recruit his type of QB going forward he's not worried about burning the red shirt year...Lewis will make it real interesting in 2017...Allen could possibly compete but Rettig will never touch the field at QB that is obvious...Like Lamar Jackson @ Louisville & Buechelle @ Texas etc. and many others around the country ...Ash means business ...he will not play games ...recruits see Odin , Sneed, Bailey all frosh playing early in Ash's system...if your good enough it doesn't matter...

exactly..... a couple of things.....we saw no passing at all between geo and Oden, and we have just seen the two of them
run against Howard.... Howard..... encouraging, but I would not get carried away with it till they can do that against a legit
div 1 team... and oh, chuck the pineapple

Does anybody really think that QBs that can only run and throw 4 yard passes succeed in the Big 10? This offensive system is a joke for big 10 football. Regardless of whether a pro set or a spread, you have to throw the bleeping ball down the field every now and then! Laviano can only do it against bad teams. Our 2 backups that played today haven't shown that yet. If New Mexico wins, the season is over. Reality check.

Even if they are somehow worse passers than Laviano which would be scary, their running abilities absolutely make up for it. It's pretty clear how much better this offense works with a running QB.

Let's hope so. Let the cream rise to the top and start developing them for the future. Laviano is a good soldier and all, but he's the least talented of all of the QBs that have starting ability. Gio, Oden and Allen are all superior runners by far, Rettig has a superior arm. Let the guys with real potential get their shots in, its not like we are going to be winning a lot of games this year with Laviano starting.

But Chris did such a good job mirroring Drew's "look"

That should count for something

Nuts - I'm taking that directly from Mehringer's presser. He specifically said that Oden has a long way to go from a passing standpoint

CL continues to throw off his back foot. Our coaches are going with good reads with poor throws over bad reads with good throws.

Oden absolutely can still be a 'Medical Redshirt' which is given by the NCAA pretty easily

Medical Hardship Requirements
To be eligible for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete has to meet the following criteria:

  • The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school.
  • The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury.
  • The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season.
  • The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.

Have not seen Oden throw but with his stature (6'5") and long arm would not be surprised if he can sling it down field 60yds. He's young and needs to develop into a passer but there's a reason why Ohio St wanted Oden if they did not get the NJ kid that played out of MD. Oden has ability and it looks like Ash and company are not going to sit around watching a qb with less ability lead this offense.

Oden is pretty much Haskins light with much worse passing ability.

I don't know about that. Haskins is more of a pro style type qb, Oden is a legit dual threat. He's also just taller, lankier and a better athlete than Haskins. Haskins is a much better passer at this point, but Oden also has a really strong arm, he's just not as developed. He's much more of a project but has a high ceiling.

Actually they really aren't that similar.

I don't know. From what i've seen of Haskins he's pretty athletic. He reminded me of Teddy Bridgewater, great passer and athletic runner that could do it all.

Oden has great running ability but doesn't have the same touch and ball placement skills as Haskins (he's got a good arm though). That's why he's a 3 star and Haskins is a high 4 star recruit.

As of week 2....as a diehard Rutgers fan....it looks like Maryland has won the first 2 rounds (2 weeks). Our rival is NOT Michigan. NOT Penn State (previous era). It is MARYLAND. As the 2 new Eastern programs in the Big 10, with new coaches at the same time with similar backgrounds, with similar fan bases and attendance (RU will never be Happy Valley or the Big House but we sure can be compared to the mediocrity of the College Park atmosphere and its attendance too...we will be compared through the next several years against Maryland.

Furthermore....RU fans should not be envious of PSU. Nor of MICH. But we should be very anxious and even envious perhaps of MD..because they not only have the cash but...to this point...seem to have the better recruiting and their "system" in place (unlike here sadly).

I was at the game and saw oden run...not overly impressed as he has some shiftiness but does not posses breakaway speed . Not sure if he can pass the ball better than the other guys we have. I really believe the coaches burned his redshirt because they know that the qb of the future will be Lewis from St. Peter's prep. Everything we see now is a holding pattern until he gets here.

I'm not sure about the speed thing with Oden. I think he is deceptive because of his long strides. Kid looked very fast to me

Maryland is not a rival because you said it is. I doubt there is one person on this board that hates Maryland. Rivalries have to develops naturally. You can't force it.

There is no way they burned his red shirt because they are already looking for Lewis. That's just silly. It was an experiment. If they determine he can help us win games this year then he's gonna play this year. If not and he still needs a ton of work he'll be red shirted.

BTW I saw Lewis, Micah Clark and Jonathan Taylor walk up from their seats at halftime and they did not look happy at all.

Agree about counting on Lewis. At this point he's just a verbal commitment so there's guarantee he's going to be here come next summer.

Tylin was good enough to go to louisville, let us not sell him short.
