Chip Kelly fired

Wow I just looked him up. His record at Oregon was 46-7 with one Rose Bowl victory and one appreance in a NC game. Unfortunately for some college head coaching talent doesn't always translate into pro coaching talent.

Think it's time for the areyoinuts ban treatment for Caliwhatever..this guy has lost control. We can't all be smart enough to move to California and be OK with 27 year old AAC wide receiver coaches as offensive coordinators but maybe if he insults everyone enough maybe the board will fall in line with such insight and brilliance
Pipe down junior.

Chip ain't going from NFL HC to college OC. Even at OSU. But how about this...if he decides to take the year off and wait to make boatloads of cash next year, could we hire him as an offensive consultant (in the same way that Fridge was supposed to be this year, but never did)? Throw him a few hundred K to act as offensive mentor to our peppy, but wet-behind-the-ears OC? He already lives close to Piscataway, and he'd only need to show up 2-3 days a week? C'mon, that could work right???
What a GREAT idea! The rest of the week he can be the assistant AD! [jumpingsmile]

Kelly said tonight he wants to remain in the NFL. I think that means he will recharge for a year then try to get another NFL job. I think that after his performance in Philly, he'll find it hard to get another NFL head coaching position. It's not just that he failed; it's that he failed while alienating his players and while having full control of personnel. And his penchant to run only 15 plays a game didn't help. He thought he could win by having the offense line up quickly, but NFL defenders are savvy enough to counter that.

He thought Sam Bustford was an NFL worthy qb LOL.

Every NFL team will look at that and pass.

Cracking me up- I obviously knew KS was being sarcastic but some of the other posters are just stupid.

Unrelated to my stupid poster remark up above...trap- did you just say you had to look him up to find out he was a pretty damn good coach in college?

That was with a ton of talent already in the program and a bank roll larger then any other university out there.
Mike Belloti had had some success at Oregon, but Chip Kelly was the one who brought the program to a different level.

Maryland did the same thing with their OC hire. Make sure you post on their forum with one of your 5 usernames to let them know they are doing it wrong.

Shark -
Just a brilliant poster
Love that guy
He brings so much to the table.
Please post more!

He represents the pinnacle of stupidity that has infested this board. No idea where they came from.

...and they did it partly due to the fact that Oregon will allow, pretty much, anyone with a pulse into the program. They have filled their roster with SoCal kids who couldn't get into SC/UCLA, etc, and JUCO kids, for the past 2 decades now. Granted, you still have to DO something with those kids - and they did - but they had a lot of help when it came to getting there. No question.

Since no self-respecting college would ever hire a coach that failed in the NFL, let's assume he stays in the NFL.

He better not take the paid year off, because people would think he couldn't find a job. Isn't that the way it works?

He has expressed interest in staying in the NFL.

Unless he has learned significantly from his stay in Philly, he's doomed. He failed as a GM, a motivator, and player developer. The only thing he was good at was installing his offense. Anyone with his playbook could do that.

Well he just moved into a house four blocks away from me. I'll have to make sure my real estate friend who specializes in houses in town knows about this. Maybe I can get part of the commission for a referral.

I am a little surprised about this. After a new coach gets hired the next person I would toss would be Howie Roseman. That guy is a snake and a self important jackass. What other GM in the NFL had his own radio show?

Yea. Rutgers was at the top of his list [eyeroll]
The posts on here are at an all time low
Unbelievable right! This fan base just doesn't have a clue! I love that we were lucky enough to get a guy like Ash as our new Head Coach, after the disasters of the past. He is putting a program together that we can ALL be proud of, and enjoy. Kelly was great in Oregon. It didn't translate to success in the NFL, and though we would have been very excited to have him coach Rutgers a month ago, Ash is our coach! And, that is where our current loyalties should be, until proven otherwise!

I wouldn't exactly say he failed. 26-21. He will get another shot.

He didn't fail overall. But he failed in those three key areas I mentioned.

Most of those wins came in the first year and half. It's been a steady decline ever since.

Sam Bradford was not the principal problem. He has improved as he has gotten rid of the rush. And Bradford relally has not had a competent receiver to throw the ball to (thanks to Kelly's poor personnel moves). The real problems, though, are (1) Kelly's personnel moves, not only at receiver, but also on the offensive line and at running back; (2) Kelly's hurry-up defense does not work in the NFL: (3) the defense was putrid, and Kelly is not a defensive mind, but instead hired someone whose coaching didn't work.

He's not a defensive mind yet forced the 3-4 on a roster tailor made for the 4-3....

Oy!

He stated he wants to stay in the NFL , but don't want to be in charge of personnel decisions.
The steady decline might be because of the personnel he had a hand in getting rid of and the ones he brought in. But he might not be suited for the pro game and that's why he wasn't as successful as he was expected to be in Philly.

Mad: he might have won big if he just kept McCoy, Maclin, and DeSean. Add a second year Mathews and Bradford...

The guy is a hell of a chef. Just don't let him buy any of the groceries.

There are reports in the Philadelphia media that the owner asked Kelly to give up his control of the roster. Kelly refused, and so was "released." I know of no evidence that Kelly did not want to be in charge of personnel; last year, he insisted on assuming that role in a front-office coup.

I said he didn't want any part of personnel decisions ( next pro stop) and wanted to stay in NFL because I read this article or one like it:
Chip says he’ll stay in the NFL, doesn’t want personnel control | ProFootballTalk
>" Kelly also told Glazer he only wants to coach in his next stop and does not want to be the personnel man. That’s surprising, as Kelly insisted on personnel control in Philadelphia and reportedly balked when Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie suggested that he should give up that control."<

My guess is if he wants another NFL HC job, he can't demand personnel control. He was pretty successful BEFORE he made all those disastrous personnel decisions.

Hurry up offense in the NFL has been successful over and over again. The NFL is a coaches league. Hurry-up takes away a lot of situational substitutions defensive coaches would be making and makes defensive calls difficult. Add to that the tiring of defense, particularly the line, is grossly underestimated.

USC fans are probably thinking that Pat Haden jumped the gun and missed the boat on Chip. Their new coach is 0-2 since getting the 5 year gig with losses to Stanford and Wisconsin. They open against Bama next year.

Personally I don't think Kelly would have been a good fit for the traditionalists at USC and not sure Kelly would even consider going there in the first place, but that won't stop some of their crazies from piling on Haden.
